Wednesday Words: What Dreams May Come

Well, the bad news is, I didn’t get an award in last week’s Thursday Threads. That’s okay because I liked the words anyway. The prompt was: *”What do you know of dreams?”* It came from my winning thread the week before. As you know, I try to take one of my prompts and put it into a different context/scene than the original. I don’t always but it worked out for this one. This scene discusses the same idea, but from totally different points of view. This is me waggling my eyebrows.

Bran perched on the roof of the building. Beneath him, the river meandered past, wending its way to the lake named Ontario which awaited its replenishing waters. Eventually, the water flowed into the ocean. Curiosity had drawn him to the west, to the great falls called Niagara, the Thunder of Waters, in the language of the original people. He glanced at the man balanced beside him.

Anyone who glimpsed them from the street below would see two large ravens settled on the upper edge of the building’s parapet—not unusual for birds of all sorts to be atop the library. They wore their glamours like the second skin they were. Water flowed from the aqueduct built beneath the structure and splashed into the river.

“What do you know of dreams?” Bran asked but didn’t expect an answer.

“The Lady gives and the Lady takes away.” Orin’s cryptic answer confirmed Bran’s thoughts. “You went to the other last night.” Delivered in a bland voice, the tone was both accusatory and derogatory.

She is the one who sent me.” Bran did not want to say her name aloud. Queen Mab was vicious even in her most mellow mood. Orin would know who that particular she was.

Had Orin been a hound, he would have growled. Bran noted the other man’s attitude. He’d have to address it eventually. Mab sending Orin with him just complicated matters. That or she had grown suspicious of her Raven. Bran bore several titles: the Queen’s Raven, the Queen’s Shadow, the Queen’s Assassin. Sitting here in the sun, he regretted them all.

This scene occurs not long after the breakfast scene with Ariel from previous weeks. ALL of this is apparently occurring before Ariel officially meets Aisling. He’s seen her. He’s followed her. But they haven’t spoken. Yet. That’s coming soon.

So, writers, you have a prompt if it works for you. Readers, do you dream? Are they vivid and you remember them when you wake up or are they vague wisps, a gossamer memory of the fantastic?
