Happy Hump Day! And happy #1lineWed day. Today’s theme for Twitter posting is **NICKNAMES** Watching the discussion on the twitter feed has been interesting. Wait! What? Nicknames??? Lots of that going on. Me? I’m all OMG *FLAIL* WHICH NICKNAME SNIPPET TO USE!!!! Then I remember this “first meet” between Smoke Jenner and Leigh Daniels, the H/H of NIGHT FIRE (October Kindle World release). While it’s in Smoke’s 1st person POV, the reader still gets an idea of Leigh’s personality. 😉
Smoke
I resisted rubbing my thigh. Her bumper had clipped me and it had taken real focus not to limp as I approached her. She was something, even hiding in shapeless navy coveralls. There was no thinking about it. My nose detected the sweet-cherry residue from a house fire and I could read her patches even in the semi-dark. Arson. Fuck.
“What’s your name?”
She raised her chin, pretending she wasn’t nervous. The tang of bleu cheese curled around the cherry wood. Yup. I made her nervous. Good. I knew where she was headed. I’d just left there. I needed to find out how good she was.
“Sergeant Daniels.”
Smart ass. I liked that in my women. If she was the investigator on this fire, I was definitely gonna make her mine for the duration.
“What’s your first name?”
“None of your business.”
“Can I call you None for short?”
“Smart ass.” She muttered it under her breath but I’m a Wolf. I hear better than the average bear and a hellava lot better than a human.
Yeah, takes one to know one.
“What about you?”
“What about me?”
“What’s your name?”
“Smoke.”
“What kind of name is that?”
“My kind of name.”
I caught her studying the patches on my cut and considered turning around so she could see my full patch. I’m a Nightrider, out of our original chapter in Kansas City, but I ride all over. I work directly for the Russian, our national president. He’s the one who bestowed my road name. Anymore, that’s the only name I needed.
“Is that like a nickname?”
“No. It’s my road name.”
“Road name. So…you do belong to one of those motorcycle gangs.” She sneered at that last word.
“We aren’t a gang. We’re a club.” We were more but I wasn’t about to discuss brotherhood with her, no matter how good she smelled.

Caveat…that’s a first draft. What about y’all? Writers, do your characters have nicknames? Readers, what’s your favorite character’s nickname?

SQUEE!
Well, obviously, I have Jo – short for Josephine who is also called Josie or Joey or Jojo depending on who’s talking, And she’s Babydoll to her ex, Zeke – which she hates. And then there’s Jace in Dying Embers – which stands for her initials J.C. In Accidental Death, Dennis’ sister calls him Denny. In BloodFlow, Miranda is Randi to her friends, and Vic Hammond is actually Vicky. Nicknames everywhere.
A rose by any other…. *ducks and runs*
Have I mentioned how much I love Jo and Zeke? I can’t wait for IN DEEP WISH!
