Thursday Thoughts: Universal Reasons X 10

universeSo here it is Thursday again. I’ll be doing #ThursThreads on Siobhan Muir’s site. I love participating in the weekly flash fiction. It’s fun. It’s productive. It’s challenging. It makes me happy. Writing makes me happy. Even when it makes me unhappy. There’s not a whole lot I’d rather be doing. Reading. Reading makes me very happy. I’m getting ready to dive into UP WISH CREEK, B.E. Sanderson’s latest in her Djinn series. Jo makes me happy. (That’s her main character.)

So anyway, I’m just going to be little Merry Sunshine today. Because… Well, just because. The world is a pretty crappy place right now. In the grand scheme of things, there’s not a whole lot I can do to change that, but I can do something. I can write stories people want to read. I read stories written by people I like. I can watch my hummingbirds and check out the morning glories and feed the feral cats. I can smile and laugh, and I can look a little closer because…

Every single minute of every single day, they’re there, Silver.

They may be hidden behind circumstances, people, or light poles. Challenges, closed doors, or lost keys. Camouflaged, dovetailed, or whispering. Purring, kissing, or hissing. But more often than not they’re lying about in the open, under a clear blue sky, in plain view. Absolutely. Guaranteed. You’d throttle me otherwise.

10,000 reasons to be happy.

What makes you happy today?

  1. First off, SQUEE! I’m so glad you’re reading UWC! I hope you enjoy it. Okay, I hope you love it, so it’ll tide you over until I get some more written. ;o)

Exactly. Choose to be happy. Friends make me happy. HUbs makes me happy. Kira makes me happy. reading makes me happy. Writing makes me happy, when I can actually get the words to flow. Choosing to be unhappy is not an option. =oD

Yup. Exactly. I know so many people who are miserable and there’s no reason for them to be. Well, there might be, but they choose to wallow rather than finding things to bring a smile. Me? Even with the bouts of depression and PTSD, there’s always something that makes life worthwhile. *nods* That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it!

  2. I love this post on being happy and being happy with what you do. So many times I think my writing doesn’t matter but you reminded me that it makes people happy. 🙂

    • Silver James says:

Then my work here is done, Nancy. 😉 I’m only partially teasing. As writers, we all worry about whether our words are…well, worthy for lack of a better word. I wonder if I’m writing in a void or if there are people who pick up one of my books, reads it, and for a brief period of time is transported to someplace else–a world beyond themselves where they can get lost in the story.

I once had a reader tell me that she devoured my books while sitting next to her husband in ICU and that she could put aside her worry while she read them. That was the biggest thing a reader ever said to me and I still hold it close to my heart–especially when I get discouraged–all these years later.

Got something to say?
