Monday Morning Fix

repeatSo…there was a weekend. People were busy doing things. Lots of things. Me? I mostly kept my head down and my mouth shut and wrote lots of words. I did some stuff but I’ll discuss it below in the appropriate section. πŸ˜†

Writing: Sometimes, books seem to write themselves. The words pour out and I’ll suddenly come to a period or a question mark–even an exclamation point on the rare occasion. I stop. I realize my feet are cold and swollen. My neck is stiff and my hands are cramping. An hour or more will have passed and even if I can barely stand up out of my chair, I’m exhilarated. Other times, I sit and stare at the last line I wrote knowing it sucks but not sure how to fix it, nor how to move forward. Lately, with this book, it’s been far more of the latter. I was way behind on my word count and while I had a few future scenes either sketched out or completed, I was well and truly stuck. So, Saturday, I did all the things that normally work to get me unstuck. That’s how I figured out I had the time line all wrong. So I sat down to plot the time line. FYI? I NEVER do that. I’ve done timelines for birth dates and such but never a day-to-day “calendar” of events. Trust me, this book needed it. So I was standing in the kitchen waiting for my vanilla soy milk to heat in the microwave in preparation for my next of way-too-many cups of coffee trying to explain this to Lawyer Guy. Even with the new time line the end of the book was eluding me. I was just over halfway in my word count and normally I have at least an inkling of the end. Then it hit me. The whole knotted-up mess of a plot unraveled just as pretty as you please and dang if I didn’t sit down and rip out almost 3K words. So, I’m back on track and hit just over 35K words. So yay!

TV: Yeah…still not doing a whole lot of TV. In trying to avoid the news, I tumbled across the WGN series, OUTSIDERS. I’d watched the first couple of shows and drifted away. Then I watched a show from somewhere in the middle of the season as the channel ran a marathon on Saturday in preparation for the new season this week. I got sort of intrigued so I DVR’d the shows. I’ll give them a look see at some point, see if it holds my attention this time. I’m two LUCIFER episodes behind. I need to get my word count done early so I can catch up before tonight’s episode. Other than that, I’m watching FIRST 48, NIGHTWATCH and LIVE PD. πŸ™„

Movies: I caught some trailers over the weekend and I know there are some I want to see but sadly, the only one I remember is one I have no intention of ever watching. CHiPS might have been cheesy back in the day but I LOVED that show! Jon and Ponch and the whole crew! Well, some numbnuts has gone and made a parody movie of it. Grrrr. Oh! FANTASTIC CREATURES. I didn’t watch the last couple of Potter movies, but I want to see this one as soon as it hits cable.

Books and reading: Most of what I’m reading is secret, contest stuffs. No revealing until after the winners are announced in July. πŸ˜‰ But I’ve also grabbed a couple of sale/free books to add to my stash: IN FOR A PENNY, by Nancy Naigle and Kelsey Browning, a cozy mystery starring little ol’ southern ladies of the gray-haired variety. THE THIRTEENTH MAN, by J.L. Doty, is an outer-space fantasy. I also snagged BRIDES FOR BROTHERS (Midnight Sons #1) by Debbie Macomber from the library. Since I’ve been in a slump where reading for pleasure is concerned, I thought I’d go out of my usual “comfort” zone to see if I could shake things up.

So, that’s pretty much my run-down for the weekend. What did y’all do? Got plans for the week? I’m writing. That 1/31 deadline isn’t getting any further away but at least I’m back on the right track and really liking this book now. πŸ™‚ Time for another cup of coffee because daylight’s burnin’ and this dang book ain’t gonna write itself…

  1. LOL… timelines… Yeah, wouldn’t you know it, I had that problem, too. When I went back over the first draft it occurred to me that I had stuff happening on a Sunday that couldn’t happen on a Sunday, and a boatload of things seem to packed into Tuesday. Which really wasn’t bloody possible for normal beings. So, I rewrote stuff, broke it out, wrote some different stuff, and got it in a more believable state. I’ll start the reread today to see if I actually fixed it all or just made it worse.

I’ve reached such a point in my frustration with celebrities that about the only things I watch are old movies and reality crime shows. I watched this really strange old Robert Mitchum movie I’d never heard of, over the weekend. The writing was terrible and it definitely wasn’t something Hollywood would dare to make today. But it was worth watching once. Yeah, Hollywood… They make good stuff into comedies – CHiPs, Starsky and Hutch, 21 Jump Street – because they feel the need to sneer at everything they deem ‘beneath’ them. Meh. I refuse to watch. Not that I have any affect on anything they do.

I edited. I fished. I watched some truly sucktastic football. I finished the book I was reading and haven’t started another because I was wrapped up in Natural Causes. That’s pretty much it for me.

You know my feelings on things. Thanks, BTW.

LOL on your timeline. Yeah…been there. πŸ˜‰ While I can do Love at First Sight in my shifter books because…FATED MATES!…I have trouble with it in my contemporaries. Lust at First Sight, yeah buddy, but the romance and love and HEA takes awhile. I was cramming too much into to little time because this is a Christmas book. I didn’t want things to stretch out too far after Xmas Day, and they would have to. So, I backed up the first meet a few weeks and now I can get everyone to cooperate–Deacon, Quincy, Iffy… Iffy took some convincing until I fixed the times. Now she’s chomping at the bit and wanting words! πŸ˜‰

Enjoy the fishing. Supposed to be like 70 here on Wednesday. Should be a good week for you to get out and about.
