I don’t think I ever realized that the Monday after Easter is actually called “Easter Monday.” I guess I never actually paid attention to the calendar but it’s there listed. Anyway, it’s the first full week of the new month. I never know what to expect from April. Watching things green up and flowers bloom, listening to the brids sing. Blue skies and warmer temperatures. And if we’re lucky, spring rain instead of storms.
I came across a word yesterday that made me smile: unprepossessing. It was used in the book I’m listening to but I always remember the first time I heard the word–in the movie McLINTOCK. In the particular scene, Katherine McLintock (Maureen O’Hara) has arrived home after a long seperation from her husband, George Washington “G.W.” McLintock (John Wayne). One of the ranchhands is staring at all the luggage while Katherine proceeds to take control.
Lem: Don’t seem possible one woman could use all them clothes.
Katherine: You keep a civil tongue in your unprepossessing face!
Lem: Yes ma’am.
Katherine: And unload my baggage, please!
Lem : Yes ma’am. Oh, by the way, what does that word “unprepossessing” mean?
GW: Lem, someone called me that once, looked it up. It’s best you don’t know.
Clem: Ok, Mr. McLintock, g’night. “[flickes reins of buggy team] Git up!
I ❤ this movie so much. There are so many wonderful quotes and scenes and I’m pretty sure there are those out there in the cancel culture who would PC it out of existence. Just so you know, John Wayne was my first crush. No. Really. I wanted to be his kid. Or be rescured by him. Or grow up to marry him. I didn’t care. I just wanted to exist in the same world with him. And between THE QUIET MAN and McLINTOCK, he and Maureen were damn near perfect on screen. BTW, I also went and looked up the word. If you want to know, go look it up. 😉
Wow. That was an interesting walk down Nostalgia Lane. And I totally want to watch the movie now. Okay. Other stuff happened last week and over the weekend. I think. No. It did. There was lunch with the Kids at Alvarado’s (our fave Mexican place but it’s a 30 minute drive so we only do it once a month after siren test which is up that way.) The sun was out and the weather nice. Open windows! I have to start thinking differently when I make out the grocery list–moving away from warm and gooey and comfort food to lighter fare.
I finished off Jayne Castle’s Harmony/Ghost Hunter/Arcane Plus series. It was a fun marathon. Rumor is another book is coming but I don’t know when. Once I finished ILLUSION TOWN, nothing else new jumped out at me so I went back to the St. Helen’s trilogy of Jayne’s. Same premise–humans settle a planet by way of a space “curtain,” curtain closes, humans stuck, their technology fails. In this case, they have various gradients of various psychic talents and “ice rock” provides power rather than the “amber” found on Harmony. Anyway, fun if predictable and I’m all about the fluff right now.
Opening day was awesome! And then the next two games happened. Ah well. It’s a full season so my Cards have time to get it together. That said, I’m a little put out with MLB at the moment. And that’s all I’m saying about that.
The Masked Singer. I finally caught up on the two DVR’d episodes. Danny Trejo (Raccoon) and Paul Logan (Grandpa Monster) were unmasked and sent home. Trejo is a wonderful character actor and can be a villain or the scary dude with the golden heart. Logan is a YouTube star. Uhm…okay. Obviously, I am not his audience. I did “pick up” two new songs from the shows to add to the soundtrack for GaTAS*, the current Penumbra Papers WIP. Sometimes, it’s as hard to get a fix on the soundtrack as it is to write the darn book. Once again, progress has been made but still not as fast as I’d like.
I’ve given up on finding a solution for a cover or “skin” for my new keyboard. I think I’ve mentioned that between body chemistry and nails, I “kill” the markings on the keys. I also have an editor cat, drooly dogs, and I consume copious amounts of coffee and snacks at my desk. All of these things are bad for keyboards. There are all sorts of covers and skins for flat keyboards–laptop and desktop alike–and I can still get one for my old-style ergonomic keyboard but not the new one. I don’t know why given the pandemic thing that Microsoft isn’t making silicone skins for all their models of keyboards. I wish I had a 3D printer or knew someone that could print me one for this LXM-00001 verson. Ah well. None of my “quick” fixes worked–the double layer of SaranWrap or the shrink wrap. At least they were cheap to try.
Speaking of totally random, yesterday was my 10th Anniversary here at the Wild Side. My how time flies. Thanks to all who drop by, check in, and leave comments. Totally appreciated. 🥰
So…have I covered everything? Easter and the last day of Passover was yesterday. Hope all enjoyed time with friends and family. Hope you all had a good weekend and that the coming week brings good things your way. Burning question for the day: Chocolate bunnies–what part do you eat first?
Pssst: I’m all about the ears! 😉
*And no, I am NOT going to tell you what the initials stand for. Yet.
Tease. =op
Anyway, I hope y’all had a good Easter. I eat the ears first. Not sure if I’ve met anyone who goes tail-first. Happy Blog-iversary! Bummer about your keyboard cover thingie. Yay for your masked SInger fun. Who knew Trejo could sing? I’m right there with ya on the MLB. Yay for fun books to read and for Mexican with the family. I love McClintock! And The Quiet Man! And John Wayne, with or without Maureen. He was probably my earliest glimpse of what I know as a hero. And yes… Spring! Yay!
I was up late last night using my insomnia to accomplish things. I got the paperback versions of Blink and Unequal both done yesterday. Now I’m waiting on the covers for UatB and CU so I can format those for print, too. Whoopee. Not exactly sure why since paperback sales are iffy at best, but they’ve been on my list for a long time, so crossing that stuff off is good. I guess. Thinking about doing some sales later this month. Thinking about writing, but not doing any. Today is for tackling the filing I’ve put off for months, cutting the dead stuff off the roses, and maybe washing windows. And a nap willl be in there somewhere… cuz I got like 3 hours of sleep. Blerg.
🤗 (that’s a huggy face – lol) I am a tease but I think you’ll like the title and cover. Once I hit on both, I had a happy. Last night sucked. Loki has gone MIA. We can’t find him anywhere and he didn’t slink out to eat overnight. He’s not prone to showing signs of escaping to the wild outside but we’ve looked all over the house and garage. 😦 LG and I were both up and down all night. Stormy’s coming this afternoon so no nap for me. Early bed time.
Trejo did a great job and he showed so much personality! When everyone was chanting “Take it off!” he reached for his belt buckle. It was hilarious because one of the directors came on stage to “have a word.” The guy is 76 and helping to raise two autistic kids. Amazing!
Don’t work too hard and enjoy the weather. And good napping! 😴
