Friday the 11th

Today is a somber day. No. I’m not watching the ceremony. And it’s for the same reason I stay away from the media on April 19th. I lost friends both days. Instead, I’m taking a page from one of those friends. When asked if he was every worried about how dangerous his job was (FDNY firefighter) he said, “No. Life is what it is and I’m living each day to it’s finest. I’ll do my job and laugh or cry once it’s done and I go home. Personally, I plan on laughing a lot.” Those words came back to me in a dream last night. It was a restless night but I dozed and I heard his voice, reminding me of what he’d told a reporter here in the aftermath of the Murrah. He was part of NY Task Force 1. He was in the midst of the rescue on 9/11 when the towers came down. He didn’t go home. But 26 years later, his words came back to me in a dream so I looked for something that made me laugh and I found this. It’s true and it’s funny and I hope it makes you laugh too. Even if it’s through some tears.

It’s a rough day. Since that day, I’ve had a hard time even seeing the twin towers on TV or online. I always get a catch in my chest, like a lump that won’t go away even though I ignore it most days. This morning, I wrote a post about it. It’s less sadness than it used to be and more of the pissed. And overwhelming frustration. I’m so sorry you lost someone close on that day. I didn’t lose anyone close, but twenty-five years later and it’s still like a big, open wound that’ll never heal. Maybe that’s because we never saw justice. =o|
