Thursday Thoughts: Universal Leave a Message

I used to dream a lot. Vivid dreams. And I usually remembered them when I awoke the next morning. Often, those dreams became ideas for stories. Then I sort of stopped dreaming. I’m not sure when exactly. It’s just…I woke up one morning and there were no lingering memories of what had transpired on the video screen of my mind. It was rather disheartening. It might have something to do with my bouts of depression. It might be stress. Hell, it might just be due to my being older than dirt. Sadly, when I stopped dreaming so vividly, writing became a chore and like most chores, I put off doing it. This recently popped into my inbox and perhaps the Universe is onto something…

Ask any question, Silver, just before you sleep, and it will be answered.

Actually, you can ask any question, any time you like, and you’ll be answered, but mornings your “hearing” is often best.

Yes, we can hear you now –
The Universe

We get a lot done, Silver, in dreamland. Actually, we’re custom engineering your publishing empire right this very moment… with the “Hello Kitty” logo, right?

I have started remembering–vaguely–some dreams. The problem is, they’re totally bizaare and off-the-wall stuff covered in crazysauce. I’m thinking just maybe I should give the Big U’s suggestion a try. Tonight, I’m going to ask a question about the WIP and we’ll see if I dream about it–and can actually remember what I dreamed! I’ll report in at some point. In the meantime, do you remember your dreams?

Caveat: When you go to tut.com and sign up for messages, you have to put in some goals you hope to achieve. A publishing empire seemed…simpler than saying I want to be a best-selling author, though I’m not sure why. 🙄 Either one takes a lot of effort. Oh, and I promise, no “Hello Kitty” anythings!

Wednesday Words: Bleeding Heart

The #1lineWed theme is **BLEED**. Considering the current plot point in the Mob Wolves WIP, it was a natural and gave me some awesome inspiration. I’m in Chapter 3 and the O’Hara faction is moving to…consolidate, let’s say, the Mob holdings in Boston. There’s a splinter group called the Eastside Rovers, led by Seamus and Jack O’Ferrell, and they aren’t very nice. Ronan, Mick, and some of the boys are paying them a couple of visits, the second time around, this happens… Psst. I will give you a hint here. The girl’s name is Fiona.
****
“And what do we have here?” Micky asked, peering into the closet. The other men all paused to look at him.

Bowie’s nose twitched and his eyes narrowed. “That scent. It’s all over the bed.” He stepped closer to the man currently kneeling on the floor, a growl rumbling in his chest. He sniffed again. “And all over Seamus.”

Ronan stared at his brother. “Haul her out here.”

Mick did. And got an armful of hissing wild cat. The girl was a little thing but she was kicking and biting and hitting. Being a smart man, Mick swung her away. She dropped onto the narrow bed covered in sheets so foul he almost felt sorry that’s where he’d deposited her. The girl bounced and came up in a crouch, facing them all.

“I’ll not go down easy,” she hissed at them.

Bowie was the first to see the bruises that covered her and his growl rumbled out. He swung a booted foot at Seamus’s head, sending the man onto his side. “He do that to you?”

The girl’s eyes riveted on Bowie. “Aye. He did. Him an’ his filthy cronies.”

Her Irish was thick and the O’Hara men all took a moment to assess her. Her hair was dirty and tangled but it didn’t hide the vivid black eye nor the purple bruise and swelling that ran from her cheekbone to her jaw. More bruises marched up her arms and legs, along with ligature marks around her wrists, ankles, and neck.

Bowie stripped off his shirt before anyone else moved because the girl wore nothing but a ripped wife-beater. She scuttled across the bed as he approached. “Here, cailín.” He gently tossed his shirt to her. It landed on the bed in front of her but she didn’t reach for it. “None of us will touch ya,” he vowed. Only then did she grab it and yank it over her head.

Ronan favored Bowie with a knowing look before he landed a kick straight to Seamus’s gut. The man had been foolish enough to think he might get away. He returned his attention to the girl. “Are you Seamus’s then?”

Green fire lit in her eyes. “Feckin’ hell, no!”

“What were ya doin’ in the closet?”

“He shut me in there, trussed up like a lamb to slaughter. I got free and was ready to make a break when I heard the ruckus. I figured best to stay put until it was over.”

“What’s your name, girl?”

Her eyes narrowed as wariness crept through her. “That twould be me own business.”

Ronan almost smiled. The girl has spirit, despite the beating. “Bowie. Get her out of here.”

The girl froze. “No. I’ll be walkin’ out of here on me own, free.”

“Do you have a passport?” Mick, ever practical, butted in.

She paled even more if that was possible, and freckles stood out against her pasty skin.

“Ya shouldn’t be here for what’s comin’ next,” Bowie said quietly. “Come with me. I’ll take ya to my sister.”

Some new expression crossed her face. “O’Hara.” She blinked. “Heard them talkin’, I did. You’re from the O’Hara.”

Bowie groaned. The damn girl had just signed her own death warrant but the next words out of her mouth eased his worry.

“I’d damn well hug an’ kiss ya all but I’m a bit skanky at the moment. But I’d see the bastard bleed. And I’ll put the final bullet in his head if you’ll let me.”
****
And there you have it. There are times I have no clue who will show up and what will happen when I sit down to write. In this case, I had a note from where I’d left off that said: (There’s one woman left upstairs. Shit hits the fan.) Building on where I ended with today’s prompt, the above is what rattled out. I hope you enjoyed.

Writers, if you have a rift on the theme, drop a snippet here. Readers, how do you feel about blood-thirsty characters?

Tuesday Treats and Titles: BBQ Chicken with Grilled Apples Salad

When it’s too hot to cook, it’s time to go to Plan B–grilling! This tasty salad combines a lot of flavor with easy prep, cook, and clean-up. What more could you want on a summer evening after a hard day at work or play?

Total Time: 20 Min.
Cook Time: 20 Min.
4 servings

Get tips on buying and prepping produce for this BBQ Chicken with Grilled Apples recipe with this how-to video. Requiring just seven ingredients and 20 minutes of prep time, this BBQ Chicken Salad with Grilled Apples is a Healthy Living recipe you’ll want to keep on hand!

What You Need
4 small boneless skinless chicken breasts (1 lb.)
2 Granny Smith apples, each cut into 4 wedges
1 large red onion, cut into 4 wedges
1/4 cup KRAFT Zesty Italian Dressing
1/2 cup KRAFT Original Barbecue Sauce
6 cups loosely packed torn mixed salad greens
1/2 cup KRAFT Classic Ranch Dressing

Let’s Make It
1 – Heat grill to medium-high heat.
2 – Brush chicken, apples and onions with Italian dressing. Grill 10 min. or until chicken is done (165°F) and apples and onions are tender, turning occasionally and brushing chicken with barbecue sauce the last few minutes.
3 – Slice chicken. Toss with salad greens, apples and onions.
4 – Serve topped with ranch dressing.

Kitchen Tips
Tip 1 – Substitute: Substitute KRAFT Balsamic Vinaigrette Dressing for the Italian dressing.

Tip 2 – Nutrition Bonus: Grilled apples, onions and tangy barbecue chicken make the perfect toppings for this flavorful low-calorie main-dish salad.

My Tips: Tip one works for me while LG prefers the original Ranch dressing. Either is tasty. Also, I’ve substituted fresh spinach (hence the vinegarette dressing) and it was yummy too! And, I serve the salad dry so folks can put the amount of dressing they want on their own serving.

Can you guess where I found the original for this recipe? You got it! My Food and Family is a great source so go check them out. I reached back into the archives for this book. Why? Because Peni, Nick, and their nemesis, Theodore Vasile are linked to the Irish Wolves. If you haven’t read DOUBLE TROUBLE, Peni is on the run with her new-born twins. Vasile has put a million-dollar bounty on her head. For…reasons. Nick is called in to help by an old friend from BlackOps days. Anyway, it’s an exciting book set at Roxanne St. Clair’s Barefoot Bay resort. Nick informed me that he’s become quite the grill master and while he might throw on a side of steak with this salad, Peni thinks it’s perfect and the twins love the grilled apples. This story has ties to other stories but it’s stand-alone so you can enjoy it without havig read any of my other books. Just click on the cover or the title to head over to Books2Read since this book is available from a wide variety of etailers.

What about y’all? Do you want out of the kitchen in the summer but still want good food? And do you like to read while you eat? Provided you’re eating alone, of course… 😁

Sweatin’ Out Monday

Baby, I WISH it was cold out there. It’s not. It’s hot, Hot, HOT! Overnight low was close to 80 and with humidity in the upper 80s range? Ugh. Just…ugh! I don’t like to sweat. Saunas and steam baths are soooo not my thing. Even when I was an athlete, I didn’t enjoy being all hot and sweaty. Anyway, it’s hot and gonna be that way all week with highs in the mid-to-high 90s. I shouldn’t complain, though. We’ve actually gotten off pretty easy so far this year.

So, in other news, there was a week and a weekend. I did some writing. A new character introduced herself and asked me to pick out a hero for her. A character I already knew about also popped up and demanded I write her not-so-cute first meeting with her hero. Yeah, I’m thinking the Mob books are all going to be sort of episodic in one long “season” rather than each guy get his own book. That’s working for me at the moment.

On the home front, Lawyer Guy and I have been bitten by some sort of strange anit-hoarder bug. He spent many days out in the garage. I cleared out space in my dish cabinets. We have coffee mugs that we’ve never used. We kept the sentimental ones and the ones we use almost daily. The rest headed to our local thrift store. Lots of stuff from the garage headed there too. LG wanted a big baker’s rack that was in my previous office space for file boxes out in the garage so we emptied it and then I started on my old desk. Hopefully, we’ll have the “Florida” room for doing projects soon. It used to be a covered patio but the first (and only owners besides us), built a wall across it and turned it into an indoor space. The entrance to the storm cellar is also out there so floor space is rather at a minimum. Anyway, progress. Even if we wore ourselves out.

LG is having minor surgery today. Out-patient but Jake and I get to sit in the waiting room at VA for however long it takes. Yippee. Not. He’s been in pain and waiting for the procedure for a couple of months so yeah, it is sorta a yippee.

The Kids are back from vacay. They had a blast. I’m happy to have Drover home safe and sound.  (FYI, Drover is my Highlander.) Jake is happy to have him back, too. Drover’s backseat is more dog friendly than the Jeeps.

Let’s not talk about sports.

“Reading” was good last week. I’ll finish up LAST GUARD today, which is the new Nalini Singh release in her Psy-Changeling series. It’ll get 5 stars. Next up is a reread of the first book in Darynda Jones’ Sunshine Vicram series. The second book hits my Audible account tonight. My buddy B.E. Sanderson has two of suspense books on sale: Accidental Death and Natural Causes are 99¢ each through Saturday Night. Grab them on Amazon. They’re page-turners for sure!

If I don’t stop waking up between 5 and 5:30 every morning, I’m going to fire myself. It’s getting ridiculous. Of course, I need to be up that early since LG has an early slot for surgery.

Not much else going on around here. I figure there will be naps for all involved later today and a light dinner with very little work. Not a bad way to start the week–the Monday afternoon nap, I mean. Not the reason for it. Anyway, that’s my world. What’s up in yours?

Thursday Thoughts: Universal Fortunetelling

So. I used to tell fortunes. Sort of. Very seldom for others, usually for myself. I used tarot cards. And I once tried Viking runes. I never got an intuitive feel for them like I did the tarot. I used tarot cards in two of my books–one published, one not. I really should get SHADOW DANCE published one of these days. I thought it was a cool book, but the first in a trilogy. I need to finish the other two. Some day. The other was a little witchling who read the tarot cards in Jackson Square in New Orleans and she was claimed by a gargoyle. THE SOUND OF SILENCE is also a pretty cool book, even if I say so myself. Anyway, I found this message from the Universe rather interesting…

Truth be told, Silver, no matter how logical or intuitive you are, neither of these virtues, no matter how greatly you were endowed, will ever enable you to peer into the future and reasonably predict the twists and turns your life may take, nor the circumstances, fortunes, and friends that might someday be your own. It is, in fact, impossible.

That’s what imagination is for.

Thoughts become things,
The Universe

So, Silver, how’s the new year looking?

As you know, I tend to relate these bits of wisdom to writing, and today is no different. We’ve discussed process several times. I’m also going to compare this to something I learned about ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). A psychologist explained things like this: Some people are farmers. Some people are hunters. Farmers plan. They prepare the land, plant the crops, watch them grow, harvest them, and sell or use the products. Hunters go out, often on their own, and they have to be hyper-alert and vigilant, lest they miss their prey or become the hunted instead. She mentioned that Americans seemed to have a higher incidence of ADD and she equated that with the type of personalities who settled this country. Realize, this was 30+ years ago, but the analogy made a lot of sense to me at the time.

Some people are plotters (the farmers of the writing process). They go about planning a book methodically with outlines and character bibles and follow the logical plot they created. Me? I can’t. My brain isn’t wired that way. I’m mostly a pantser (the hunters), ie. I write by the seat of my pants, on the fly, jotting down whatever crazy pops into my head. I say mostly because I’m also a puzzler.

When I start writing a book, if you delve deep enough into my brain, you’d see all the straight-edge puzzle pieces fitted together in a natural framework. That’s the world and the major characters, even if I know little more than a name and/or a description of those characters. Then, over on that far side of the table, there are pieces fitted together with partial pictures showing. Those are scenes–some full-blown, others just the bare minimum. And sometimes those clumps of puzzle pieces don’t fit anywhere in the current framework. But, they will fit somewhere. Eventually.

Yes, my brain should probably be featured on one of those hoarder reality shows. The thing is, this is what works for me. And the Universe is right. Some people can peer into the future and predict their story. Their logic and intiutive feel for things doesn’t lead them astray. Not me. Nope. I rely totally on my imagination to provide those twists and turns, new “friends”, the circumstances and the fortunes. And that’s okay.

Writers, where do you fall on the “spectrum?” And how’s your year ahead looking? Readers, have you ever had your fortune told? Did it come true?

Wednesday Words: Time to Take Out the Trash

Friday is trash day around here but Wednesday’s #1lineWed theme is **JUNK, TRASH, GARBAGE.** And boy did that fit right in with the scene I needed to write yesterday. Warning, this is a first draft. It might be boring. I’m still working on characters, settings/world-building, and the plot. Hopefully, by the time I type The End, it’ll be exciting and compelling and all y’all will want to read it. One of the major characters–this IS something of an ensemble cast–is starting a mob war in Boston for…reasons. Anyway, The first shot was fired in Chapter 1 and this is the beginning of Chapter 3.
****
The Eastside Rovers held court in a joint called the Bayside Bar. Located at the corner of East Second and Acadia, it wasn’t much to look at. The place occupied the first floor of a triple-decker. Jack and Seamus lived on the top floor and the second floor contained rooms for their boys to flop in, along with office space. The bottom floor had been painted a dull brown, the windows blocked off with wood, except at the very top. The bit of space at the back was crammed with junk, trash, and a Dumpster close to overflowing. The stench of spoiled food and stale beer was enough to gag a maggot.

Ronan shook his head in disgust. Evidently, the O’Ferrells weren’t paying their bills. Mick rolled his eyes at the mess. They continued walking down the street to the front door. There was no sign on the outside. They waited, just out of sight should that door open.

One of the boys slipped in the back door after jimmying the lock. He was back in a matter of moments. “Full house,” Sean reported. “Jack’s at the bar. No sign of Seamus. They’ve got their girls in there tonight, like a party. They’ve no clue about Willie and they’re all about three sheets in the wind.

The Rovers enjoyed the flesh trade though their whores did not. Ronan had heard more than one complaining about the working conditions. Then the rumors started coming in about the new flesh available to special customers, about girls who never worked the streets. Ronan wanted to find out about that but he’d need Seamus. Jack ran the gambling and the smuggling. Seamus was all about the girls.

“How many?” he asked Sean.

“About twenty.” He rubbed his jaw. “And maybe fifteen women?”

“What’s our plan?” Mick asked.

Ronan smiled and more than one O’Hara man shuddered at the frigid resolve wafting off him. “We’re going to take out the garbage.” He retrieved his phone from his pocket and made a call.
****
There it is, for better or worse–and I suspect a lot of it will end up in my trash folder. Or maybe not. Anyway, writers, any trashy words to share? Readers, who takes out the garbage at your house? 😉

Tuesday Treats and Titles: Bacon-Wrapped Cheese Bites

I grew up in the Southwest. Sweet and spicey is a standard combination in food. I also like jalepenos, cheese, and bacon. I mean, seriously, what’s not to find yummy there? I’d never thought about adding a little sweet to this particular favorite appetizer.

Total Time: 30 Min.
Prep Time: 10 Min.
Cook Time: 20 Min.
9 servings (2 bites to a serving) Really?!?! I’m thinking this recipe needs to be doubled or tripled!)

Take ordinary cheese bites to a new level with these Bacon-Wrapped Cheese Bites. Made with apricot preserves, jalapeño slices, bacon and cheese, these Bacon-Wrapped Cheese Bites will fly off the plate.

What You Need
6 Tbsp. apricot preserves
18 slices OSCAR MAYER Fully Cooked Bacon
18 drained pickled jalapeño slices
6 sticks KRAFT or POLLY-O 2% Milk Mozzarella String Cheese, cut into thirds

Let’s Make It
1 – Heat oven to 375ºF.
2 – Cover rimmed baking sheet with foil; spray with cooking spray.
3 – Spread 1 tsp. preserves onto each bacon slice.
4 – Top each jalapeño slice with 1 cheese piece; wrap with bacon slice, preserves side facing in. Secure with wooden toothpicks.
5 – Stand wrapped cheese pieces on prepared baking sheet.
6 – Bake 10 min. or until cheese is melted; cool slightly.
7 – Transfer wrapped cheese pieces to platter. Drizzle with any glaze remaining on baking sheet.

Kitchen Tips
Tip 1 – Make Ahead: These cheese-topped pickled jalapeño slices can be wrapped with the preserves-topped bacon slices ahead of time. Refrigerate up to 24 hours before baking as directed.

Tip 2 – Note: You will need to purchase 2 packages (2.52 oz. each) OSCAR MAYER Fully Cooked Bacon to get the 18 bacon slices needed to prepare this recipe.

I do ❤ My Food and Family. Be sure to check out all the nutritional info for this recipe. I also happen to love Hawk Greenwood, the Choctaw hero of RESCUE MOON, likes his snacks sweet and spicy, just like his mate, anthropoligist Dana Peterson. The Special Operations soldier goes south of the border to rescue the woman destined to be his. If you haven’t indulged in this stand-alone (even though there are cameos by other Wolves), just click on the cover or the title. It’s free to read with Kindle Unlimited. Dana’s gotten quite adept at whipping up a big batch of these whenever Hawk’s favorite team is playing on TV. 😉 Question of the day: Your favorite sport and favorite team?

Just Another Monday

July is just past half over. Two weeks left until we hit August. Days are slowly getting shorter and nights longer. I don’t have a problem with that. These are the dog days of summer, the lazy dazy days of summer, the…well, you get the drift. It’s hot and humid and nobody around here much wants to stick their noses out from under the air conditioner. On that note, I guess I should update anyone who might be interested.

There was a smattering of writing done, though most of my writing brain was centered on research. I have a whole list of characters–good guys and bad ones. I have places where they hang out and live and I’ve started chapter 3. That’s something, right? Oh, and I have photos of 3 of the heroes and one of the heroines. I don’t think the Irish Wolves will each get a story. It seems like all their stories are tied together. I’m not really familiar with this new Vella (straight to mobile/episodic) platform introduced by Amazon, but it might be something I try with this book once it’s written. We’ll see.

My Cardinals have done a little better since the All-Star break. They split with the Giants 2-1. Any time they win the split, it’s a good thing. I paid close attention to the game yesterday afternoon just in case I spotted some familiar faces in the crowd. Didn’t see ’em but got pics on messenger which gave me a happy.

Speaking of TV, OMG! The finale of “The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch” was covered in crazysauce but it didn’t end on a cliffhanger. Winter was moving in so they shut down the investigation for the year. I can’t wait for the next season to start. There is some seriously crazy-weird $h!+ going on out there in Utah. Yes, I don’t believe we’re the only ones in the universe(s). Even so, the stuff that has happened and is happening in the Uintah Basin.

On the reading front, I added a couple of new releases to my Goodreads challenge last week–Jennifer Estep’s CAPTURE THE CROWN, the first in the next trilogy of her Crown of Shards world. AWESOME BOOK! That was followed by the next in Kristen Ashley’s Dream Team series. It was okay. I’m currently doing a semi-marathon re-listen of Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changeling/Trinity series, starting with ALLEGIENCE OF HONOR, then SILVER SILENCE (my favorite in the whole series!), OCEAN LIGHT, currently open. I’ll start WOLF RAIN today, then ALPHA NIGHT. The newest entry, LAST GUARD, releases tomorrow. I’ll be caught up and ready for it by the end of the week.

Stormy came for a visit and to spend the night. He’s such a joy. Smart and growing like that proverbial weed. In other family news, Uncle Fix-It came to help get my washer fixed. I can now do laundry though there is another part that needs replacing. I’ve been assured that Lawyer Guy has the expertise to cover that when the part arrives. LG also got our new kitchen fan up and working. I had to read the instructions to him at one point. Long story, and one that made me laugh, but I’ll be nice and not poke fun at him.

And that’s pretty much my current life. Why y’all stick around amazes me but thank you! I promise I’m trying to be more interesting. Sh’up! I can hear you laughing. At least I’m writing again so there’s that. In other news, what’s up in your world?
