Friday Sinema: Rising Sun

A bit of personal history here. My grandfather had a new car dealership in a small town. Behind the garage area and across the alley, there was a long diner–the kind that had a counter and stools that ran the whole length on one side and booths that would fit two–one on each side of the table–on the opposite side. Each booth and about every 4th stool had a tabletop jukebox controller. It was called the White Rock. Grandad would take me to lunch there sometimes. I loved flipping through the song menu and Grandad always gave me a quarter. One of my favorite songs ever was/is “House of the Rising Sun” as recorded by The Animals. I got my quarter’s worth! Ah, the 60s…

So, skip to yesterday when I was looking for a video for today’s “sinema.” I tumbled across this one and bam! Bran has his theme song and I have an idea for his book, though it will be awhile. I have to get through Ariel’s first. And maybe Nikos’s. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it. Have a great weekend!

Thursday Thoughts: Universal Ideas

How can it be Thursday already? I mean…I know time doesn’t actually speed up but it darn sure feels like it. I look back at this week and I can’t remember anything I actually did. It’s all a blur. Well, except the new brand of tamales LG found. We had them for dinner Tuesday night. I remember that. They come in a cloth bag. Well, they come in a plastic bag that’s inside a cloth bag like an old-fashioned flour sack on not as sturdy. Obviously, it’s the weird things that make an impression.

Anyway. My brain takes off on weird tangents and this tendancy is currently getting in the way of doing any prolonged work on the dang WIP. I had every intention of writing lots of new words this week. Then I decided I needed to organize the “scrivening” folder by reading and making side notes on the snippets. That way, I can put the MS into corkboard mode and get an idea of what there and where each scene needs to go in the overall scheme of things. Guess what? I discovered a scene previously written that I “wrote” almost verbatim at a different time. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Then the Universe sent me this:

What if every unexpected delay, postponement, or redirect, Silver, only meant that at the very last second, right before the scheduled manifestation, I had an even better idea?

It happens.
The Universe
©www.tut.com

P.S. Way, way better, Silver. We’re talking bunny slippers and all.

I get the idea I’m supposed to put on my flipflops (my current equivalent of bunny slippers), sit back sipping my coffee and letting the book just write itself. Yeah. I’m sure y’all saw that hard eye roll. But the Big U does have a point. I’m the one creating the delays, postponements (aka procrastination), and the redirects. I’m not sure, however, that my last-minute ideas are better. That’s why I have to…you know…actually write the words.

So, after I get back from the grocery run today, I AM going to get organized. I’m going to see what is already “manifested,” and then I’m going to see if better ideas come along as I get this tale told. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Wednesday Words: Rhyme or Reason

It’s a new week and that should mean a new words in a snippet except…

Yikes. Two weeks in a row now. First, I judged Thursday Threads then last week, the writer hosting the challenge was out of town. Tomorrow, there will be a new prompt. In the meantime, I went back through my notes. I likely posted this one before but it was written long before I started officially writing Ariel’s book. Here’s the prompt: *”There is no rhyme or reason.”* I will only say that this is a dream.

****
He awoke under an ancient sweet gum tree. For a heart-stopping moment, he searched with all his senses. Where was he? Keeping time with his now pounding heart, toe-tapping music sprinted through the fog-drenched forest. A fiddle, mandolin, and guitar led the way for the country-tinged voice of a young male. He stopped to listen, catching the words. Ah, he thought A traveling song about a fox. Cheeky creatures, foxes.

The music faded into the distance. He waited, as still as the air surrounding him. No more notes to enliven his environs, or to give him a clue as to his whereabouts. A dilemma to be sure, and it would be of infinite benefit if he could remember precisely who he was.

The brush of fabric against leaves caught his attention. He faded closer to the sweet gum at his side. A sprite darted along a mostly invisible path winding through the trees. His nostrils flared. No, not sprite. Human. A human girl. This made no sense. There was no rhyme or reason for a human to be in the enchanted forest. Wait. How did he know this place was charmed?

Remaining hidden, he studied the girl. Thin, ungainly legs like a new colt stretched from beneath red and blue plaid shorts. A purple T-shirt with a huge sunflower on the front clashed with those shorts. She continuously glanced over her shoulder, as if something pursued her. She put on a burst of speed, flitting along the game trail and he saw it then, the dark shadow hunting along her trail. She hesitated as she saw him, eyes widening in fear. He held his finger to his lips, motioning her to go. He would deal with the dark. He understood his purpose now. And he remembered who he was, Ariel. The Fae King’s Seducer.
****

There is it. There is no rhyme nor reason for it. Or is there? Only the Shadow knows. And maybe Ariel. Or he will. Eventually. Writers, if you are inspired, write away. Readers, what’s your reason for rhyming today?

Yeah, yeah. I know. It’s a lame sign off. Gimme a break. I gotta end the post somehow. 😉

Tuesday Tidbits: This, That and Another

I can’t think of one of my book titles to go with a recipe and besides, y’all have either bought all my books or you aren’t going to. That’s okay. I’m not mad. The whole point of the Treats & Titles thing was to stir insterest in characters and their books with a bonus of food. I’ve only sold 2 books this month. Thank goodness for SS payments.

Bears have the right idea when it comes scratching backs. I always get an itch I can’t reach so I end up in the doorway doing the rubbing scratch against the edges of the door jamb.

Birbs. Birbs are weird. I buy the exact same brand of birb seed from the exact same store. One bag is devoured within days. The next bag, you’d think there was a cat sitting in the middle of the birb feeder. Granted, Pete is outside most days–especially now that Toby is here. And yes, the ferals/neighbor cats wander by but they don’t camp out at the feeder. I have no clue what the difference is.

Yes, I misspelled birbs on purpose. I’m in a birb sort of mood.

It is still ragweed season.

Bad puns are stll puns. Just sayin’. And yes, sometimes I’m punny without meaning to be punny. Sometimes I mean it.

Sarcasm is a lost art. That is all. I now return you to your regularly scheduled day. Who needs more coffee? 🙋🏼‍♀️

Middle Monday

I am determined not to be a slug this week. I have every intention of meeting each day with optimism and perserverance. So far, so good.

Weekend. Saturday. There was afternoon soccer. We took both dogs. The trip up was an adventure in PITA Pup havoc! He spent half the trip with his butt on the center console.and the rest of him in my lap. Y’all, he is a very BIG dog. The first half of the trip was spent with me trying to keep him in the back seat so LG could drive. Jake sat like a gentleman and sighed a lot. Once we got to the soccer fields, Jake and I camped out under the “awning” on my camp chair and an umbrella. Toby and LG walked a lot and worked on “heel.” He’s much better on the leash. Sit, down and stay are still foreign concepts. *sigh* 😔 The boys won 4-1. Yay, especially since they were playing an opposing club’s gold team.

After the match, I had to hit the ladies so I took Toby. He needs to learn about stalls. He did pretty well until two little girls came in and he decided he needed to crawl under the door to investigate. It was touch and go there for a minute. 🙄 Coming home, Toby lay in the floor and Jake on the seat and they both napped. Needless to say, the trip home was peaceful.

In bookish news, I finished off Rachel Caine’s DEAD WITCH WATCHING. I’ll get around to book 2 eventually. I had other books on the TBR pile that were calling my name. WHITE HOT (Dramatized Adaptation), the second book in Ilona Andrews’s Hidden Legacy series dropped last week. I’m currently listening to BURN FOR ME, book 1 because…fun! And reminds me what’s going on because the series has an overreaching arc.

Sunday was laundry and…believe it or not…WRITING! I woke up yesterday determined to get back on track. And, believe it or not, a few posts on X were inspirtional, and boom. I got off the internet after listening to a couple of songs^ and I got about half-way through Chapter 9. I’ll finish it today. Or else. Yes, I’m shaking my mother finger at me, no mirror required. This book has dwaddled long enough. It’s time. So…writing. Every day. Good. Bad. Ugly.

Not much else is going on in my world. I’m going to fix another cup of coffee, spend about an hour on the internet and then shut ‘er down until I finish Chapter 9 and start Chapter 10. I will do this every day this week. What are you going to do?

^songs: Yes, they will appear on the soundtrack. Both are sung by Fleurie. That’s all I’m sharing. *bwahaha*

Friday Sinema: Bananas

This has been a tough week. I’ve cried more often than I’ve laughed. This make me smile so I’m sharing. If you ever get the chance to see the Savannah Bananas in person, go! That said, the waiting list for tickets has 2,500,000 people on the waiting list. Yes, you counted those zeros right. Thats 2 1/2 MILLION people are waiting to see them in person. Only, Baseball Boy, and Stormy got to see them here a couple of years ago. Soooo jealous. If you aren’t familiar with the team, google them. There’s a good interview from the Kelly Clarkson show that explains. I hope it puts a smile on your face today. Have a good weekend. No plans except maybe a soccer game for us. Y’all?

Thursday Thoughts: Dark Days

Yesterday proved that a certain segment of this world never learned from what happened 24 years ago today. How do people raised with the freedoms and advantages provided by the USA hate that much? They preach tolerance and acceptance and inclusion only to be intolerant, unaccepting, and violent of and against anyone with a differing viewpoint. They are no better than those who slaughter in the name of their religion.

Then, to add acid to the mix, sick people took to social media to chortle in glee and post joyfully about the murder of a man who only engaged in civil debate. He offered open discourse. He didn’t hate those of opposing views. He didn’t ridicule them. He didn’t disparage them. He simply invited them to a dialogue, back and forth about those topics of disagreement.

I’m not particularly religious but I prayed yesterday. Prayed hard. And I continue to send up prayers for the Kirk family. And I don’t hate those who not only condone but actively inspire events like yesterday. And those on September 11, 2001. But I will tell you right now, if you thought yesterday was a victory, then there is a very special place in Hell for you and your ilk.

Kindness. Understanding. Family. Love of God. Love of country. Love of freedom. Love for his fellow humans. THAT’S what Charlie Kirk believed in. That’s what we should all strive for. Rest in peace, Charlie. Your legacy will live large.

Wednesday Words: Umbrellas

Well. I didn’t win last week’s Thursday Threads. In fact, I didn’t write anything. Not for the flashfiction challenge. I was the judge. As a result, y’all are getting a bit more than usual. This is part of a scene where Sade has been called to the Director’s office to receive her next assignment. And since I usually drop a writing prompt, I’ll give you a choice. Here’s the one from Thursday Threads: *”That was too simple.”* Or, here’s the one from today’s snippet: *”Don’t forget to pack your umbrella.”* Pick one and write!

****
When the Director made her the SAC of the MAGIC division, she’d made a point to touch base with the Special Agents in Charge of all fifty-five field offices. She searched her memory for a name and a face.

“Battah informed me that area is null space.”

Sade remembered the Buffalo SAC now. Farez Battah. He was a piece of work. She pondered that information. “Is that exactly what he said?”

“Yes. Well, to be precise he said, ‘Director, Rochester is null space. It is impossible for there to be any magic for miles around it. The local police have suspects. They are not supernatural. I repeat, they are not supernatural.”

She almost snorted. Yeah, her memories were on target. She’d bushed up against Battah and their encounter had not been friendly. Pulling out her phone, she called Caleb, putting the call on speaker.

He answered with a curt, “I’m on vacation.”

“What do you know about Rochester?”

“That’s where the Mayo Clinic is.”

“No, the other one.”’

Silence stretched. “Wasn’t it at the end of the Erie Canal? And it’s on one of the Great Lakes.”

“I don’t need a geography lesson, Caleb. Magically speaking.”

Another round of silence before he spoke. “I think it’s one of those weird places.”

“Weird how?”

“No magic. There’s something about the water or something. I don’t remember. Rochester is like the opposite of New Orleans.”

She traded looks with the Director. New Orleans was wide open to Magicks and was a sanctuary city. Any Magick could come and go so long as they followed the rules. Her old gargoyle guardian, Roman, was the current Legate. He enforced the laws.

“I’m not quite following, Caleb. Does that mean Rochester is closed to Magicks?”

“Not exactly. There’s just no Magicks there. They stay away.”

“Why?”

“Not a clue. Now, if you don’t mind, I’m in the middle of making my wife very happy.”

“Tell Del I said hi. I’ll talk to you soon.”

“Don’t call me. And I won’t be calling you. Vacation. Respect it.”

The silence of a dead line filled the air. “To quote Hamlet, something’s rotten in Rochester.”

“Alice will put together your travel itinerary. Do you want another agent?”

Sade shook her head. If both Ariel and Nikos were already there, she could count on them for backup. And if she barged into Battah’s domain with force, the shit would hit the fan. “No. If I need assistance, I’ll send for it.”

Closing the file, she stood up. Curiosity overrode discretion. “Who brought this to your attention, boss?”

Bailey rubbed his forehead. “You know.”

And she did. Rhys Wynne, the President of the United States, and an Elf. He was now in his second term and no one knew what would happen when the election rolled around.

Exiting the inner office, Sade paused at Alice’s desk. The small woman handed her an envelope. “All your information is inside. Your flight leaves at noon.”

“Thanks.” She headed for the door, waving without turning as Alice  called after her.

“Don’t forget to pack an umbrella, dear.”
****

I’ve heard that Rochester can be almost as rainy as Seattle. And Alice always knows. Anyway, there you have it. Sade is now officially involved. Let the games begin. Also, I spent way too much time researching flights from DC to Rochester and the planes used so I could pick Sade’s seat. 🤦🏼‍♀️Do you pack an umbrella when you travel?

Tuesday Treats & Titles: CinnaMoon Rollups

Since FB didn’t want to play nice with my blog photo yesterday, I decided to feature MOONSTRUCK MAFIA: BOSTON for today. These CinnaMoon Rollups fit right in with reading while there’s a full moon. They’re easy. They’re tasty. But you might want to lick your finters before you turn the page or swipe left. 😉

Cinnamon/CinnaMoon Rollups
Yield: 10 rollups
Prep time: 30 Minutes
Cook time: 10 Minutes
Total time: 40 min

Ingredients
1 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened
1 large egg yolk
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/8 teaspoon salt
10 slices soft bread of your choice
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted

Instructions
1 – Preheat oven to 375 degrees F and line a baking sheet with a piece of parchment paper.

2 – Roll bread slices with a rolling pin to flatten slightly, and trim off the crusts with a sharp knife or kitchen scissors.

3 – Beat the softened cream cheese, egg yolk, sugar, vanilla and salt in a medium bowl until combined.

4 – Divide the mixture among the bread slices and spread evenly. Roll up slices tightly jelly-roll style, pressing on the edges to seal.

5 – Combine the brown sugar, cinnamon and salt in a shallow bowl. Generously brush each roll on all sides with the melted butter and roll in the brown sugar mix. Arrange the roll ups on the prepared baking sheet.

6 – Bake until lightly browned and hot, about 10 minutes. Cool on the pan for 5 minutes and serve. Makes about 10 pieces.

Tips
1. This recipe can easily be doubled.

2. These roll ups freeze really well. Simply freeze them before baking, on the parchment lined baking sheet. Transfer them to a zip lock bag when they’re frozen.

3. To reheat, arrange on a parchment lined baking sheet and cook at 375 degrees F until lightly browned and hot, about 20 minutes.

4. Store any leftovers tightly wrapped in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

I don’t have character back-up for this one. I just like the darn things and wanted to share the recipe. They’re great year round but they seem especially appropriate for Fall treats. Sorry. I mean, let’s face it. Every one of my characters would make them and snack. Hannah and Sade would try to con someone else into making them but they could produce a batch in a pinch. 🤣 Y’all know the drill. Click on the title–MOONSTRUCK MAFIA: BOSTON, the pic at the top, or use the QR code to head over to Books2Read to find your favorite on-line book seller. Happy reading and snacking!

Oh, and question for today. If you aren’t reading one of my books, what are you reading? I’m giving Rachel Caine’s The Hollows series another try, currently listening to DEAD WITCH WALKING. I’ve got the newes JD Robb book in reserves but I’m always looking for suggestions!

Full Moon Monday

Who saw the full moon last night? 🙋🏼‍♀️

The weekend was nice and cool. Sadly, a bit of heat is coming back this week but we’re talking highs in the mid-80s so I really can’t complain. Humidity is not really a factor. Which is nice.

If y’all are into humorous paranormal romance, and you haven’t read Shelly Laurenston, you need to! Her Honey Badger Chronicles make me laugh. Often out loud. The newest release is TO KILL A BADGER. I would shuggest starting at the beginning so you know who the characters are. The badgers are a spin off from her main Pride Series. The way she characterizes the various breeds in their human form really does crack me up. I also finished up Jayne Ann Krentz’s Fogg Lake trilogy. Interesting paranormal suspense and you can mostly get the gist of things even though it is an adjacent series to her overall Arcane Society universe. Needless to say, I’ve had some great book listenting this past week and weekend.

Speaking of the weekend, the best laid plans and all that. It was First Saturday but due to circumstances and on account of because, no siren test for me. PITA Pup is still being mostly a PITA in public and we decided it was just easier for me to stay home. Then the Sunday soccer game got canceled because they couldn’t get refs. There was also college football but I’m not going there. Cowboy Nation is hanging their heads.

Writing got done. At least a little. ‘Nuff said about that. Pretty sure y’all are sick of my whining about this book.

On that note, I’ll stop boring you, finishing off my first cup of coffee, and considering what the heck I’m going to do today to procrastinate instead of write. 🤣 How was your weekend?
