Thursday Thoughts: Dreams Happen

I used to dream a lot. Vivid dreams. Some were pretty weird. Some were wishful thinking. Some were plotting and planning because I’d be thinking about a story or a character or whatever situation needed to be addressed in real life. I also used to remember my dreams, also vividly. And then stuff happened. If I dreamed, I didn’t remember them. And the words dried up. Odd how that works. Anyway, the Universe might be onto something.

That’s right, Silver. This is a dream.

You’re still asleep. Any minute now, an elephant might appear behind you wearing a pink tutu and tennis shoes. Or maybe the phone will ring, and it’ll be Abraham Lincoln to ask why you’re late for the ball. Or perhaps Oprah Winfrey is down the hall, live audience in tow, about to introduce you as her new favorite author. Silver, anything can happen in a dream, anything, without regard to the past, without regard to logic, and you never have to figure out the “hows.”

Silver, learn from your dreams, because the stuff of time and space is no different. Forget your past. Pitch the logic. And drop the cursed hows.

Tallyho,
The Universe

Silver, cute whiskers.

Yeah, the dreams lately have been along the lines of dancing elephants doing “Swan Lake” and me stroking my whiskers and meowing. But that’s okay. Because the writing has sort of been really hot one day and not so much the next. I’m starting to notice the day after the weirdness invades my sleep is usually a good day for words. I’m hoping the trend keeps up. Except Oprah? Not so much. Anyway… What about y’all? Do you dream? Do you remember your dreams? Are they weird? 😉

Wednesday Words: Enemy Mine

Friends and foes. Lovers and enemies. Sometimes they are the same. Sometimes they should be the same but those involved are too stubborn. Our #1lineWed THEME for the day is *ENEMY*. I found this snippet in the current WIP. And I’m glad because I’d marked the chapter this is snipped from as needing final edits. Yeah, nope. It was written before certain twists appeared in the story so now I’ll be working on some revisions. S’all good. And I gotta say, as big a pain as this book has been? There’s a lot I love. Also, a note on the soundtrack. The song for this chapter? Daughtry’s “What About Now.” Ya might wanna listen while you read. 😉
****
Memory was an odd thing, especially when filtered through centuries rather than decades. Humans marked their existence by remembering the huge, life-altering events. Colleagues of his at the University of Chicago could relate in great detail where they were on that November day when John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. Or on April 19, 1995—the Oklahoma City bombing. And 9-11. The whole world remembered that date. He remembered Pearl Harbor. Hiroshima. The Hindenburg. Titanic. He wondered how the true immortals kept track of all those history-shaping events.

He took another sip, swirled the smooth whiskey around his mouth, settled a bit deeper into the chair. Dawn was still a few hours away but Chicago could almost rival New York with its skyscrapers and the lights. Almost.

A song drifted up from the street below. He closed his eyes. Sade strutted from the shadows, all long legs eating up the space to the cell where the cops held him. Yes, she had the look, the one Roxette was singing about. Sinjen pushed out of the chair. He didn’t want to remember.

Twenty minutes later, he occupied a table in the corner of a noisy bar. His waitress passed him her phone number as she served his drink. The slip of paper sat on the table top drinking up the ring of moisture left by a previous occupant’s drink. Women checked him out with hungry eyes. Men reacted to his presence in two ways—some wanted to be him. Others wanted to prove their manhood by taking him down. He sipped whiskey, watched, winced as music, voices, and sports on the various TV screens all clashed.

He didn’t want to be here but anyplace was better than his apartment. Too many memories there. Too many memories of her. Sade Marquis. The bane of his existence. The reason he opened his eyes every night. His phone buzzed in his pocket. Withdrawing it, he glanced at the screen . SADE CALLING. He thumbed the IGNORE button and laid the phone on the table.

Another song started to play. Another memory he didn’t want to remember. Another reminders of what he wanted to forget. His phone beeped. Voice mail. He wanted to ignore it, wanted to delete it without listening.
Holding the phone to his ear, he listened to the recording. Her voice sounded husky, like they’d just made love. “What about now?” she said. “Is it too late?”

The walls closed in. Time to go. He left cash—and the soggy napkin—on the table. Warm darkness folded around him as he walked back to his apartment building. Chuck, the night doorman, snapped to attention as he held the door. The normally garrulous man looked like he was about to swallow his tongue. Sinjen didn’t give him an opening, not that it would stop the human under normal circumstances.

Chuck didn’t follow him to the elevators, instead halting at the concierge desk. The leggy blonde manning the desk arched a brow at the doorman but her attention remained focused on Sinjen. The corners of her full mouth pulled up into a knowing smile but nothing about her drew more than a passing glance. He was only interested in one woman.
Even riding in the elevator brought back memories. He focused on the security camera hidden behind a fancy scroll-work panel. Sade had spotted it immediately. Until that ride up to his apartment, he’d never even considered the presence of security cameras. He was aware now. Always. No matter where he was. Because of her.

One of his neighbors was waiting for the elevator as the doors opened. He nodded to the woman, ignoring her interested gaze. He would need to feed sooner than later, but he’d find someone else, someone with no complications. He slipped into his apartment, ignoring the flashing light on his answering machine.

Still restless, Sinjen refilled the Irish crystal glass with Jameson and resumed his position out on his balcony. Feet up on the railing, lounging in the cushioned chair, he looked like a man who controlled his world, a man in charge, a man who could relax in the knowledge of that control. Anyone who knew him—few, indeed—would recognize that he was about to snap.

There were few moments in his long exile from life since Mathias first turned him that Sinjen hadn’t wished for a heart and the emotions that lodged there. As he stared at the cell phone, Sade’s pleas echoing in his memory, he was glad that feelings no longer chained him. Did that make him a coward? Likely. Did he care? Not one whit. He’d wanted her the moment she strutted into his life. He’d been patient, had hunted, had seduced, had claimed. And he’d wanted to keep her. Until he couldn’t.

Sade was human. She would age. Die.

He was vampire. He would not change, except to grow colder, more distant. Until an enemy managed to stake him or he walked into the sun to end his existence, he would not die. They’d argued over something of no consequence, or so he’d thought. Sade didn’t think when her blood was up. And even as a Templar, he hadn’t been a saint.
****
Oh, the things that are about to happen! And there are enemies lurking. Writers, any enemy words to share? Readers, do you enjoy a friends-to-enemies story? Or do you prefer your enemies to all be the bad guys?

Tuesday Treats & Titles: Cilantro-Lime Chicken

I’m a big fan of lime and cilantro. Street tacos–soft tortilla wrapped around fajita meat with onions and cilantro topped with squirts of lime juice are summer-time favorites. This quick and easy meal provides all the flavor. With the weather warming up, this quick dinner doesn’t heat up the kitchen.

Total Time: 20 Min.
Prep & Cook Time: 20 Min.
4 servings

Bring some beautiful color and flavor to plain chicken breasts with this Cilantro-Lime Chicken. Our Cilantro-Lime Chicken is made with fresh lime zest and juice, cilantro, cheese and finely shredded cheese and salsa verde.

What You Need
1/2 cup TACO BELL® Verde Salsa
1 tsp. zest and 1/4 cup juice from 3 limes
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro, divided
4 small boneless skinless chicken breasts (1 lb.)
1/2 cup KRAFT Mexican Style Finely Shredded Four Cheese

Let’s Make It
1 – Combine salsa, lime zest, lime juice and 2 Tbsp. cilantro.
2 – Cook chicken in nonstick skillet on medium heat 3 to 4 min. on each side or until evenly browned on both sides. Top with salsa mixture; cover. Simmer on medium-low heat 3 to 4 min. or until chicken is done (165ºF). Remove from heat.
3 – Top with cheese; cover. Let stand 2 min.
4 – Sprinkle with remaining cilantro.

Kitchen Tips
Tip 1 – Creative Leftovers: Cool, then refrigerate any remaining chicken up to 2 days. When ready to serve, pull the chicken into shreds, then reheat and serve wrapped in warmed tortillas. Add your favorite taco toppings, if desired.

Tip 2 – Serving Suggestion: Serve with hot cooked rice and a steamed fresh vegetable, such as carrots or green beans.

My Note: Our appetites are obviously bigger than normal. Or something. Two small breasts would be one serving. If I want soft taco leftovers, I double the ingredients. Also, I’ll warm up flour tortillas to serve instead of bread.

Gotta love My Food and Family for the tasty. CLICK to get all the details. This has always seemed like a Tex-Mex type of recipe and Leigh Daniels totally agrees. She’s the former arson investigator from Dallas, Texas who discovered that the mysterious Nightrider called Smoke was her one. You know what they say, right? Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Leigh will attest to that. Theirs is a wild ride with lots of twists and turns. You can read their story in NIGHT FIRE. Just click on the cover or the title to head to the universal link page. You can find the link to your favorite on-line retailer there. Who’s had street tacos? 🙋🏼‍♀️ Who loves street tacos? 🙋🏼‍♀️ Who’s hungry now? 🙋🏼‍♀️

Easter Monday

cute-puppy-pictures-hello-im-here-to-make-your-monday-suck-lessI don’t think I ever realized that the Monday after Easter is actually called “Easter Monday.” I guess I never actually paid attention to the calendar but it’s there listed. Anyway, it’s the first full week of the new month. I never know what to expect from April. Watching things green up and flowers bloom, listening to the brids sing. Blue skies and warmer temperatures. And if we’re lucky, spring rain instead of storms.

I came across a word yesterday that made me smile: unprepossessing. It was used in the book I’m listening to but I always remember the first time I heard the word–in the movie McLINTOCK. In the particular scene, Katherine McLintock (Maureen O’Hara) has arrived home after a long seperation from her husband, George Washington “G.W.” McLintock (John Wayne). One of the ranchhands is staring at all the luggage while Katherine proceeds to take control.

Lem: Don’t seem possible one woman could use all them clothes.

Katherine: You keep a civil tongue in your unprepossessing face!

Lem: Yes ma’am.

Katherine: And unload my baggage, please!

Lem : Yes ma’am. Oh, by the way, what does that word “unprepossessing” mean?

GW: Lem, someone called me that once, looked it up. It’s best you don’t know.

Clem: Ok, Mr. McLintock, g’night. “[flickes reins of buggy team] Git up!

I ❤ this movie so much. There are so many wonderful quotes and scenes and I’m pretty sure there are those out there in the cancel culture who would PC it out of existence. Just so you know, John Wayne was my first crush. No. Really. I wanted to be his kid. Or be rescured by him. Or grow up to marry him. I didn’t care. I just wanted to exist in the same world with him. And between THE QUIET MAN and McLINTOCK, he and Maureen were damn near perfect on screen. BTW, I also went and looked up the word. If you want to know, go look it up. 😉

Wow. That was an interesting walk down Nostalgia Lane. And I totally want to watch the movie now. Okay. Other stuff happened last week and over the weekend. I think. No. It did. There was lunch with the Kids at Alvarado’s (our fave Mexican place but it’s a 30 minute drive so we only do it once a month after siren test which is up that way.) The sun was out and the weather nice. Open windows! I have to start thinking differently when I make out the grocery list–moving away from warm and gooey and comfort food to lighter fare.

I finished off Jayne Castle’s Harmony/Ghost Hunter/Arcane Plus series. It was a fun marathon. Rumor is another book is coming but I don’t know when. Once I finished ILLUSION TOWN, nothing else new jumped out at me so I went back to the St. Helen’s trilogy of Jayne’s. Same premise–humans settle a planet by way of a space “curtain,” curtain closes, humans stuck, their technology fails. In this case, they have various gradients of various psychic talents and “ice rock” provides power rather than the “amber” found on Harmony. Anyway, fun if predictable and I’m all about the fluff right now.

Opening day was awesome! And then the next two games happened. Ah well. It’s a full season so my Cards have time to get it together. That said, I’m a little put out with MLB at the moment. And that’s all I’m saying about that.

The Masked Singer. I finally caught up on the two DVR’d episodes. Danny Trejo (Raccoon) and Paul Logan (Grandpa Monster) were unmasked and sent home. Trejo  is a wonderful character actor and can be a villain or the scary dude with the golden heart. Logan is a YouTube star. Uhm…okay. Obviously, I am not his audience. I did “pick up” two new songs from the shows to add to the soundtrack for GaTAS*, the current Penumbra Papers WIP. Sometimes, it’s as hard to get a fix on the soundtrack as it is to write the darn book. Once again, progress has been made but still not as fast as I’d like.

I’ve given up on finding a solution for a cover or “skin” for my new keyboard. I think I’ve mentioned that between body chemistry and nails, I “kill” the markings on the keys. I also have an editor cat, drooly dogs, and I consume copious amounts of coffee and snacks at my desk. All of these things are bad for keyboards. There are all sorts of covers and skins for flat keyboards–laptop and desktop alike–and I can still get one for my old-style ergonomic keyboard but not the new one. I don’t know why given the pandemic thing that Microsoft isn’t making silicone skins for all their models of keyboards. I wish I had a 3D printer or knew someone that could print me one for this LXM-00001 verson. Ah well. None of my “quick” fixes worked–the double layer of SaranWrap or the shrink wrap. At least they were cheap to try.

Speaking of totally random, yesterday was my 10th Anniversary here at the Wild Side. My how time flies. Thanks to all who drop by, check in, and leave comments. Totally appreciated. 🥰

So…have I covered everything? Easter and the last day of Passover was yesterday. Hope all enjoyed time with friends and family. Hope you all had a good weekend and that the coming week brings good things your way. Burning question for the day: Chocolate bunnies–what part do you eat first?

Pssst: I’m all about the ears! 😉

*And no, I am NOT going to tell you what the initials stand for. Yet.

As if, Silver, life was easy, people were awesome, and you just haven’t yet decided which of your favorite charities should receive your anonymous $1 million donation.

And no, “as if” is not the same as “what if.” Just sayin’…

Or is it?

Happy April Fools Day.

Wednesday Words: Work Out

Another Wednesday, more words to tease you with. I had a lot of snippets to chose from this time because the #1lineWed THEME is **WORK**. In this snippit, Sade is working hard for the money. The fact that she’s having to deal with not only an Interpol agent, but one who happens to be a vampire. Lt. Jean-Louis Durand met Sade and Caleb at the airport when they landed in Paris. Can I just say that our favorite magick is not impressed?
****
“You know what I am.” The vampire spoke softly and sounded surprised. He also made it a statement, not a question.

Sade shrugged and offered him a speculative look. “You’re a vampire.”

“And you have no problem with my…” He struggled for the right word. “For my being?”

“I’ve worked with vampires before. I’m just surprised that Interpol accepted a magick within its august ranks.”

That earned her a smile. Even his eyes crinkled in amusement. “I and my human counterpart are something like you and Caleb. We work the magical crimes. I work nights, he works days. We sometimes compare notes.” He gave a very Gallic shrug.

“My partners a werewolf. So long as he’s not left out in the rain, we get along fine too.”

That got a growl from Caleb and a chuckle from the French vampire. “I am surprised that you recognized what I am. I am very good at being human.”

“And I’m very good at recognizing magicks.” Sade offered her own very Gallic shrug.

“I had heard this about you yet I did not quite believe. Can you recognize all magicks for what we are?”

“Can a werewolf follow a magical trail?”

“Some, yes.”

“Then you have your answer.” Sade didn’t know this dude and wasn’t about to give away her trade secrets. The fact she had been marked by both a master vampire and the king of the fae was strictly need to know and Loo-te-no Zahn-Loo-ey Doo-ran wasn’t on that list. She switched subjects. “So, about this dragon?”

Jean-Louis laughed, the sound deep and rich and meant to entice. The sound washed over her with barely a ripple. This vampire didn’t hold a candle to Sinjen.

“This dragon arrived a few days ago and things began to happen.”

“Which dragon?”

“The Drakon of Klan Kolikikos, Sade, of course. Is he not the dragon with which you are most…familiar?”

She did not like the insinuation in Jean-Louis’s voice. In her frostiest voice, she sad, “What has he done now?”

“Nothing.” Amusement glinted in his eyes.

Sade arranged her expression into an appropriate glower. “If he’s done nothing, then why are we here?”

“Because, as I mentioned, things began to happen. We cannot link any of them directly to his actions but we find it highly suspicious that these events began to occur upon his arrival.”

“Would you care to enlighten us?” She pointedly included Caleb.

“Certain members of the Magick community here in Paris have gone missing since his appearance.”

“And?”

Jean-Louis blinked at her. “What is it you mean and?”

“If you were on the wrong side of the dragons and one popped into town, wouldn’t you quietly disappear?” While the vampire pondered, Sade continued. “How do you know they hadn’t already scheduled a…” She leaned toward Caleb. “What do Europeans call vacations?”

“Holiday.”

“Yeah. That. For all you know, Durand, these disappearing magicks are simply living their own lives on their own timetable. You have no direct correlation between his arrival and their disappearance.”

“But this is Paris,” the vampire argued.

“And?”

“Why is the dragon here?”

“I don’t know. Why does anyone come to Paris? Maybe he wants to eat cheese and pastries and drink wine.”

“I do not understand why you defend him.” Jean-Louis looked sly now. “He just tried to kill you.”

“Did he?”

Oui.”
****
I am making progress. I’ve hit a rough patch for Sade and Sinjen and they aren’t cooperating because they think they know what I’m going to do to them. They don’t have a clue. Today, I plan on making them work for their HEA. Writers, any working words to share? And readers, how hard should a couple have work for their happy ending?

Tuesday Treats & Titles: Bacon-Bourbon Apple Pie

Okay. I’ll be honest here. When I first saw this recipe I was all OMG! *FLAIL*!!! (There might have been a Muppet involved.) Why? Four words: bacon, bourbon, apple, and pie. I mean, add a cup of coffee and all the food groups are present and accounted for! And who doesn’t like hot, fresh pie that’s ready in just over an hour?

Total Time: 1 Hr. 20 Min.
Prep Time: 20 Min.
Cook Time: 1 Hr.
Get creative with our Bacon-Bourbon Apple Pie recipe! Crispy bacon streusel tops this fabulous bourbon apple pie, making for a sweet and savory dessert.

What You Need
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
3/4 cup flour, divided
6 Tbsp. cold butter, divided
5 slices cooked OSCAR MAYER Bacon, crumbled
1 ready-to-use refrigerated pie crust (1/2 of 14.1-oz. pkg.)
6 cups sliced peeled Golden Delicious apples (about 6 apples)
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 Tbsp. bourbon
1 tsp. vanilla

Let’s Make It
1 – Heat oven to 400ºF.
2 – Mix brown sugar, cinnamon and 1/2 cup flour in medium bowl. Cut in 1/4 cup (4 Tbsp.) butter with pastry blender or 2 knives until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in bacon.
3 – Place crust in 9-inch pie plate as directed on package for one-crust filled pie. Place apples in large bowl. Add granulated sugar, remaining flour, bourbon and vanilla; mix lightly Spoon into crust. Cut remaining butter into small pieces; place evenly over apples. Cover with crumb topping. Place on baking sheet.
4 – Bake 30 min. Reduce oven temperature to 350ºF; bake 30 min. or until apples are tender. Cool.

Kitchen Tips
Tip 1 – Size Wise: This impeccable flavor combination in a classic pie can be enjoyed on a special occasion.

Tip 2 – Food Facts: For best results, refrigerate the pastry-lined pie plate until ready to fill with apples.

Tip 3 – Foil Tip Pie: Cover edge of pie crust with strip of foil for the last 15 min. of the baking time to prevent it from browning too much. (I actually have several sizes of metal covers for this very thing!)

Tip 4 – Substitute: Prepare using any other cooking apple, such as tart Granny Smith apples.

Tip 5 – Note: Place the oven rack in the lower third of the oven before using to bake the pie.

Tip 6 – Variation: Omit bourbon. Increase vanilla to 2 tsp.

I’m totally ignoring that last tip. Just sayin’. CLICK HERE to get all the nutrional details from My Food and Family. I wasn’t sure which of my characters I wanted to link to this recipe. Celie Monaghan and Rhys Kendric mentioned that it had been awhile since I gave folks a peek at their story. It’s  humdinger–fated mates, mistaken identity, revenge. I mean seriously, Bacon-Bourbon Apple Pie is the perfect compliment to their story. You can read all about it in BLOOD & FIRE: A Moonstruck World Novel. It’s free to read if you have Kindle Unlimited and only $2.99 if you want to buy it and put it on your keeper shelf. Just click on the cover or the title for the quick trip over to th ‘Zon to grab your copy. Have a piece of pie, a cup of coffee*, and read on, m’friend. Read on!

*Or the beverage of your choice.

Monday Madness

IgnoreMondayCatHow much longer for March Madness? At least one of the Oklahoma teams made it to the Sweet Sixteen. Good on you, ORU. It’s Monday again. The last one this month. The fact there have been FIVE Mondays in March is somewhat disheartening.

In other news, WordPress is turning into Facebook when it comes to makng things harder in order to “simplify.” Grrr. It didn’t need fixing, WordPress. FYI, WP is the platform this site is built on. They’ve messed up my classic “block” and dashboard and now they’re messing with the way I can display photos. Why?????

At least I got some new words over the weekend. Sinjen is having an existential crisis, Sade made an arse of herself, and the story is moving forward. I also have a new title–as opposed to the working title–and Only and I have agreed on an image and concept for the cover. Yes, I’m a big ol’ tease. But I don’t want to reveal too much until I’m waaay closer to typing The End than I currently am. I was shooting for the end of the month. Yeah…no. Now I’m taking it day by day. I finally have a clear vision for this damn book. Yeah, yeah. I know. About friggin’ time.

In other news, I read and loved B.E. Sanderson’s RUMOR HAS IT (Duke Noble, PI #1). If you are a fan of mystery/detective novels and small-town noir, grab this one! That’s the only new and exciting title. Otherwise, I’ve been indulging in a marathon re-listen of Jayne Castle’s Ghost Hunter/Harmony/Rainshadow series. They’re paranormal SciFi romance set on a distant planet and connect back to JAK’s contemporary and Amanda Quick’s historical paranormal romances under the Arcane Society umbrella.

TV has been…well, lets just say there’s a bunch on the DVR that I haven’t caught up with yet. My bad. I have no clue who got unmasked last week on The Masked Singer. And as much as I’ve been looking forward to Night Watch coming back to New Orleans, I haven’t found the time to watch. Part of the problem is the stupid time change. I’m awake and weird times and am often asleep before the late news comes on. I tried to watch something on the DVR last night and I hit fast forward at the first set of commercials and woke up an hour later to the screen asking if I wanted to delete, start over, or save. 🥱😪😴

Opening Day is in less that a week. BASEBALL! I do wish the sports channels would show more college baseball and softball. And I’ve already mentioned the whole madness thing. Have no clue who made it into the Elite Eight, or are we already to the Final Four? Anyway, I’ve been watching my Cardinals when I can catch them on the tube.

Not much else going on around here. Still waiting to see what parts of the landscape survived the deep freeze. I have some hope that there is life out there in the yard. My goal this week is to write every day. And not just “piddle” writing, but real, meaningful scenes that move the book forward. This thing has driven me batty long enough. What are your goals for the week?

Friday Sinema: Spring is Sprung

Last Saturday, Spring officially arrived. Of course, within days, we had tornadoes and snow and then warm weather before our temps plummeted and it rained. That’s okay. It’s a Southern Thing. Which is why this video made me gigglesnort. Gigglesnorts are a Southern Thing, too, by the way. Anyway, have a great weekend. And enjoy Spring while you can!
