Thursday Thoughts: Universal Sight

This has been a sorta crazy kinda week and a half. I REALLY want to to express my thoughts on the truly crazy stuff I’ve seen lately but I try very hard to keep my PoliSci/Government majors and early careers out of this space because I’m a writer now. But I just say to day, dang…there are some truly screwy people out there saying $h!+ that they’d be smarter to say into a mirror WITHOUT the camera on in a lifestream to social media. Just sayin’… Ther is a point for starting out with this and it has to do with today’s entry from the Universe. These “thoughts” are aimed at life but I tend to reshape them to apply to writing because that’s the way I roll. And today’s thoughts fit both.

When you see things that pain you, Silver, that sadden you, or that make your heart ache, remember… you’re not seeing all.

I hope you never need this one.

All love,
The Universe
©www.tut.com

P.S. Yeah, Silver, and I do hope you “need” all the abundance ones I’ve sent.

Anyone who’s ever studied creative writing knows of Joseph Campbell’s “The Hero’s Journey.” In simple terms, the hero goes on an adventure, is victorious in a decisive crisis, and comes home changed or transformed. There are pages an pages of discussion on the topic so feel free to do a search on the net for more info. While this sounds like the basis of an epic fantasy, its pretty much the roadmap of any novel–including romance. In romance, both the two main progragonists take this journey. They meet, stuff–both good and bad–happens, something REALLY bad happens, they grow, learn, get back together or stay together and fight through, and end up with their Happy Ever After.

So what does this have to do with today’s thoughts, you ask. In writing, the author needs to remember to throw wrenches at the monkeys so they can play with them to make your story interesting. These twists, turns, crises, speed bumps and angst are what helps the characters grow into who they are supposed to be. And yes, this whole thing is just a short explanation. This blog is not exactly a master class on writing romantic fiction. It’s just occasional tips and musings that I’ve learned over the years and 50+ books.

As for real life, $h!+ happens. Bad things. Sad things. Heartbreak. And while that appears all-consuming at the time, we humans have a tendany to wear blinders and can’t see the forest for the trees. Or the trees for the forest. When that happens, we should take a step back, take a deep breath, and really take a look at…well…everything. We need to see it all. Writers need to see it all too–from start to finish. So look around you, folks, and find one thing that puts a smile on your face. Why? Because that’s how we get through the bad stuff, the sad stuff, the heartbreaking stuff. And it’s a great way to get started on our own hero’s journey to the good stuff. Me? I just watched the sun rise and it was beautiful…

Wednesday Words: Sleep Deprived

Whatever happened to the camel? You remembe the one, right? The camel what wandered through an office being punny about Hump Day. Is it sad that I remember the camel but not the product? Anyway, it IS Hump Day so it IS Wednesday and that means words! Yay. I brought home another Honorable Mention in last week’s Thursday Threads and here’s the prompt: *”That didn’t help him sleep.”* I have no real conext for this snippet other than we’re back in New York with the Russians.

****
Rain splattered against the window, a drumbeat in counter rhythm to his heartbeat. The temperature was falling, turning rain to sleet. Maksim sat up, punched his pillow and lay back down. The numbers on the digital clock glowed blue when he turned his head. Not even midnight yet.

She’d get off work soon, walking home in the miserable weather. He chased thoughts of her away. He found the TV remote, punched the power button. Idly, he flipped through the channels. Nothing caught his attention. He tried a hot shower. That didn’t help him sleep either. Thoughts of her kept crowding in, setting his nerves on edge.

At midnight, he gave up, got up, got dressed. He strode into the living area. Two of his men watched some football game playing on the West Coast. They turned apprehensive eyes his direction.

“Get the car,” he ordered.

One man dashed out. The other watched him. “Where we going?”

“Out, Yuri. I have an errand.”

A few minutes later, they were in his black SUV and not long after, they drove past Cacciatore’s. The restaurant was dark.

“Where now, boss?”

“Just keep driving. Slowly.”

“Who are we looking for, Maks?”

And then he saw her. So did Yuri, who quietly gave directions to their driver. They stopped beside her and Yuri got out. She looked drenched. And miserable, but she wouldn’t get in. He opened the door.

“Nicola, please. Come get in the car and get warm.”

She did. It was a start.

Sorry. I can’t help myself. I’m a sucker for a damsel in distress who gets rescued by her moonstruck Wolf, especially when he lives in a penthouse and she lives in a third-floor walk-up studio apartment. And yes, that is an old skool trope but hey, it’s a trope for a reason. And I’m still a sucker for it. So, writers, feel free to riff upon today’s prompt and readers, what are some of your favorite tropes?

Tuesday Treats & Titles: Boston Blueberry Scones

Yes. I’m featuring scones. Again. I mean, look. The characters are all of Irish desent and some of them immigrants. They drink Guinness and Harp and Irish whiskey. And they like scones. And tea. Sometimes. The tea. Not the scones. I mean, let’s face it, scones are pretty darn tasty. And easy. Surprisingly so. And who doesn’t like blueberry anything? Along with white chocolate. So…there ya go.

Total Time: 40 Min.
Prep Time: 15 Min.
Cook Time: 25 Min.
16 servings

Try White Chocolate Blueberry Scones. They’re perfect for coffee, potlucks, bake sales or any other time delicious blueberry scones are called for!

What You Need
3 cups flour
1/2 cup plus 2 Tbsp. sugar, divided
1 Tbsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into pieces
3/4 cup plus 2 Tbsp. milk, divided
1 egg, beaten
1 Tbsp. lemon zest
1 cup blueberries
1-1/2 pkg. (4 oz. each) BAKER’S White Chocolate (6 oz.), chopped

Let’s Make It
1 – Heat oven to 375°F.
2 – Mix flour, 1/2 cup sugar, baking powder and salt in large bowl. Cut in butter with pastry blender or 2 knives until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add 3/4 cup milk, egg and lemon zest; stir just until mixture forms dough. Stir in blueberries and chopped chocolate.
3 – Divide dough in half. On lightly floured surface, pat each half into a round, 9 inches in diameter and 1-inch thick. Cut each round into 8 wedges. Place wedges on baking sheet. Brush tops with remaining milk; sprinkle with remaining sugar.
4 – Bake 25 min. or until golden brown. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Kitchen Tips
Tip 1 – Size Wise: Serve this special treat for your next tea-time gathering with friends!

Tip 2 – Easy Cleanup: Line baking sheet with parchment paper before topping with the dough wedges.

My Tip – While I love me some white chocolate, there are times when I just want a simple scone to nibble with my morning coffee. Or afternoon snack. Or late night forage. So I leave out the chocolate.

There you have it. If you’d like more info, go check out the original recipe at My Food and Family. Last week, Kathleen was doing the baking. This week, it’s Maggie O’Brien who is taking a  break from her duties in the ER. Her Gran, Frannie, called the Wolves “her boys.” And she baked for them. Including these scones. So imagine Quinn’s delight when he discovered his new neighbor learned to bake them from her grandmother. Quinn will be first to say that he’s greedy and the others can just beg off thank you very much. Boru’s Wolves really are like one big family of brothers. If you haven’t read their stories yet, they’re all told in MOONSTRUCK MAFIA: BOSTON. You can click on any pic with the cover, the title or HERE to head over to Books2Read to find the on-line bookseller of your choice. So, our question today is white chocolate or not? I’ve been told white chocolate is an acquired taste. I’ve obviously acquired it so I’m curious about the rest ofyou. Yea or nay?

Musing on a Monday

First, this is Veteran’s Day here in the USA. Thanks to all who have served and to their families. It’s hard to be the one left at home while those on active duty are out there serving the country. And blessing on all those who gave their lives so that all of us have the freedoms we enjoy.

As for the rest, I did diddly last week so I have very little to report. I made some decisions about what comes next on the writing front–at least until the first of the year when more decisions will have to be made. I’m working on that today as I sit here and watch it grow light outside. I’m only taking occasional sips of my coffee. It’s enough for now.

Sports this weekend was disheartening on the homefront but whoa! The Kansas City Chiefs pulled it out in the 4th. Not a big fan of the NFL but I like the Chiefs for…reasons. (Goes back to an International Fire Chiefs Association convention in Kansas City waaaay back in the day, their cheerleaders and Only.) College football in these parts is just…sad.

I’m almost finished with Darynda Jones’s Charley Davidson Grim Reaper series. After I finish book 13, there are a few novellas set in the same world and then it will be time to find something else to listen to.

That’s it. Except I’m feeling a bit…agog. I’m going to wax nostalgic, seeing as I’m older than dirt and all that. See, I’m old enough to remember the Little Rock Nine. Sputnik. The Cold War and the Cuban Missle Crisis when “duck and cover” drills were more frequent than fire drills in my grade school–and had nothing to do with tornadoes. What they didn’t tell us is that if a nuclear bomb went off anywhere close, we’d be toast. Literally. I remember when the Berlin Wall went up and I remember when it was torn down. I remember both World Trade Center bombings and the Oklahoma City bombing. Worked that one up close and personal. I remember hippies and N.O.W. (National Organization of Women) and women burning their bras. I had careers in “male-dominated” professions and never had problems, despite the flack all those feminists caused me. Yeah, not a fan. I’m still not. I had a dad who told me I could do anything and be anyone I wanted. And yeah, he was an alpha male through and through. My parents had a partnership. I married an alpha male and we have a partnership that’s lasted 40+ years and still going strong. His masculinity is far from toxic.

I remember when one party didn’t have a primary come election season because there weren’t enough of them registerd in the state. I remember being in the first year group to get to register to vote when the 26th Amendment was enacted and the age was dropped from 21 to 18.. Both parties had primaries afterward. I also watched as my state slowly turned from reliably one color to reliably the other.

I can tell you where I was when Kennedy was assassinated, when RFK and MLK were gunned down and when Reagan was shot. I remember the bombing of the Marine Barracks in Beirut (carried out by members of Hezbollah) , the USS Puebla was attacked by North Korea and the USS Cole was attacked by…well, that’s a broken record but yeah, Mid-East terrorists. I remember the Munich Massacre when members of the Palestinian Black September group attacked Israeli atheletes at the 1972 Summer Olympics. I remember the Raid on Entebbe when Israeli special forces rescued civilians, many of them Jewish, who were passengers on an Air France flight that was hijacked by…Palestinian and German terrorists. I remember when our troops came home from Viet Nam and were spit on.

Growing up was not a picnic. Just sayin’… But we did grow up. We went to college, got jobs, discovered our places in the world. Some married and had kids. Some focused on careers. Life happened. We picked up the pieces and got on with life because that’s what we’re supposed to do.

Let me point to my meme up there at the beginning. This is what adult women do when faced with adversity and a scary world. We put our hair up in a bun, pull up our big girl panties, and face that $h!+ head on. Of course, coffee helps. The reason for this trip down memory lane is to shake my mother finger at the whimpering whiners who drank too much cool-aide and like a two-year-old throwing a tantrum in the grocery store, only melt down while videoing themselves for social media. I’m embarrassed for you. Grow up. And grow a pair. You want to get ahead in this world? Learn to get along. Don’t be that kid who grabs their toys and goes running home screaming about how unfair life is to you. It’s freaking Life. It is what is. What’s fair to you is unfair to someone else. Don’t be a spoiled brat. Learn to share. Because, yeah, that pendalum swings both ways.

Anyway, there is a reason I write kick-ass heroines who are strong, intelligent, independent women. And that’s the reason my alpha male heroes love them for it. I am a strong, intelligent, independt woman and you know what they say–write what you know. And yeah, I’m glad to finally get all that off my chest. I now return you to your regularly scheduled programming. *climbs off my soap box* Cheers to a productive week for all of us.

Friday Sinema: Don’t Blame Me

So. I baked Wednesday and Thursday. Cookies. Many, MANY cookies. Yesterday afternoon, after sampling said cookies, I remembered I needed to find a video to post for today. In my momentary sugar coma, I tumbled across this one from the Brother’s Osborne and I couldn’t help but laugh. It’s funny and if you can’t laugh at it, you probably need to crawl back into your blanket fort for awhile. Be sure to pay attention to the “presidents.” 😉 Have a great weekend! And if you can’t take the joke, it ain’t my fault… 😆

Thursday Thoughts: Universal Feelings

🎶 Feelings…Nothing more than feelings…oh so many feelings… Feelings, woo-oo-oo feelings… 🎶 Thank you Morris Albert. And you’re welcome for that ear worm.

It’s Thursday. The world hasn’t come to an end. I’m glad. I have a lot of stories left to write. I should probably get on that. It’s on the list. Today though, I’m playing “Jammie” and baking cookies for Stormy’s school fundd-raising auction set for this weekend. Priorities, don’cha know. But that all ties into today’s message from the Big U.

How you feel, Silver, is more important than anything else.

And this is something you get to choose, moment by moment.

Supercoolhappy works for me,
The Universe
©www.tut.com

P.S. How you feel, Silver, is more important than anything else.

Writers are notorious for having negative feelings. Some claim they take all that angst and transfer it to their characters. Some just wallow in them until despair takes over and they curl up under the covers. Some waffle between the two. Others put their hair up in a bun, pull up their big girl panties and get on with it. And yes, I resemble all of those stereotypes, thank you very much. I have angsty days and my characters suffer for it. I have really down days and refuse to people. But when push comes to shove, I put up my hair, pull up my pants, and just “git ‘er done!” The Universe is right. We choose our feelings. And I’ll add this thought–we choose how those feelings affect us and those around us. Today, I’m feeling hopeful and invigorated. I’m going whip out that last batch of cookies and deliver all the various varieties to wherever they need to go. I’m going to settle in and start on the next writing project because change is in the air–change of seasons, chage of attitude, change for good. What are you feeling today?

Wednesday Words: It Matters

Who else feels hung over this morning? And I don’t necessarily mean because you were out–or in–drinking last night. This election season has been an emotional rollercoaster. Today, this is a politic free zone. I’ve no clue at the time I’m typing this (yesterday afternoon) of who won. Gonna leave it that way. Instead, I’m going to introduce two new characters who will appear at some point in the future. These two women are part of a tight-knit group of friends in Chicago. And yes, they will run afoul of some Chicago Wolves when I get around to MOONSTRUCK MAFIA: CHICAGO. Yeah, yeah. Totally original title, right? 🙄 Good news is, I brought home an Honorable Mention in last week’s Thursday Threads challenge and here’s the prompt: *“It doesn’t matter how.”*

****
Regina “Reggie” Jackson stared, incredulous. “You let him walk away? What is wrong with you, Gwyneth Campbell?”

Gwen flinched at her best friend’s use of her formal name. She wasn’t strong and brash like Reggie. As an investigative reporter, Reggie was always up in somebody’s business. Not her. She dealt with kids and their parents and as the doctor, she was a caretaker. She’d be the first to admit she had a soft heart. And Dante Caruso had stomped all over it. She toyed with the food on her plate and lifted one shoulder in a half-hearted attempt at nonchalance. “It doesn’t matter.”

“How can you say that?” Anger sparked off Reggie like a sparkler on the 4th of July.

“Because it doesn’t, Reg. I’m not the sort of girl he’s looking for.”

“Not the sort—” Reggie broke off her sentence with a snort of disgust. “You are beautiful and smart and sweet and kind and the man is an utter moron if he doesn’t want that in a woman.”

Gwen let out a soft breath and mumbled, “He wants someone like you.”

A burst of laughter escaped before Reggie could contain it. She reached over and laid her hand on Gwen’s forearm. “I’m sorry, hon. I am so not laughing at you. I’m…” She blinked. “What’s another word for gosmacked? Flabbergasted. No…appalled. That’s the word. I am appalled by the man’s gall.”

A smile twitched the corners of Gwen’s mouth. “Thank you.”

“That’s what friends are for.”
****

There you have it. I think I’ll enjoy getting to know these ladies when the time comes. And no, I have no clue which group will be the most vocal when it comes time. I have two fairly quick projects to take me through the end of the year and then I’ll start something new come the new year. In the meantime, let’s look on the bright side. Writers, write. Readers read. And what’s your favorite saying about friends?

Tuesday Treats & Titles: Moonstruck Chocolate Chip Scones

It’s Tuesday. I need treats! Why? Let me count the ways.

1 – We fell back Sunday. Okay, that’s really not as big a hardship as that whole spring forward thing come March or April…

2 – It’s election day here in the good ol’ USA. And yes, I’m probably standing in line as you’re reading this.

3 – I had two mornings in a row where the tornado sirens went off in the middle of the night. Lack of sleep is not a fun thing.

And finally, 4 – I have a new book out and there are recipes to share from various characters. Here’s today’s:

Moonstruck Chocolate Chip Scones

Prep time: 10 Minutes
Cook time: 20 Minutes
Total time: 30 min
Servings: 8 Scones

Ingredients
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/3 cup light brown sugar packed
1 tbsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter cubed and cold
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream
Raw or sanding sugar*

EGG WASH
1 large egg room temperature
1 tbsp heavy whipping cream

Instructions
1 – In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.

2 – With a pastry blender or two forks, cut in the cold cubed butter until pea-sized pieces remain. Stir in the chocolate chips.

3 – Pour the heavy cream in slowly, gently mixing until the dough is moist and begins to come together. Remove the dough from the bowl and place it on a lightly floured surface. Gently knead the dough until it comes together and shape into a flattened disk.

4 – With a bench scraper* portion the dough into 8 wedges. Place the wedges of dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Refrigerate the scones for 30 minutes.

5 -While the scones are chilling, preheat the oven to 400°F. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and tablespoon of heavy cream. Brush the egg wash onto each scone, you will not use all of the egg wash. Sprinkle each scone with the raw/sanding sugar.

6 – Bake the scones for 20 minutes, or until golden brown.

Tips:
1 – Store the scones in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

2 – You can also freeze in a freezer bag for up to 3 months.

3 – Serve warm with your choice of topping–like maybe whip up some of that leftover heavy cream. There’s also ice cream, jam, or even syrup if you want to turn a snack into breakfast.

4 – You want a grainy sugar to go on top of the scones. There are minor differences between raw and sanding sugar that has to do with processing, not texture. You want a “crunchy” texture.

There you go. Scones! How Irish can you get, right? And there’s that whole tea and scones thing they have going on. Me? I’m definitely coffee and scones. Shannon Maguire, who raised her baby brother Bowie, waitresses at Clancy’s, and despairs of ever being noticed by Mick O’Connor, is the character who shared this recipe with me. She admits that this is a pretty basic recipe and she’s been known to toss all sorts of things in to change up the flavors. The chocolate chips began as a special treat for Bowie when he was a kid and frankly, who can resist chocolate chips?!?! Trust me when I say she usually made two batches because as soon a Bowie would appear with his scone, all the others would show up at the door wanting their own. This gaggle included Mick, of course. If you want to learn more about Shannon and Mick and/or Bowie (and his Fee), then grab MOONSTRUCK MAFIA: BOSTON. Just click on a pic with the cover or the title right up there which will pop you over to Books2Read where you can find a link to your favorite on-line bookseller.

So, what’s it gonna be? Tea or coffee with your scone?

*A bench scraper is this THING.  I’m thinking I NEED one of those but in the meantime, I’ve used the large cleaver in my fancy kitchen knife set. 🙄

The Monday After

Y’all know how I feel about Daylight Saving Time. And yes, Saving is “singular.” No S on the end. The government just needs to leave Time well enough alone. And this whole “Save Daylight” movement? Nuh-uh. Nope. Just say no. Do those geniuses not realize that if you steal an hour from morning to add daylight to evening, you end up with dark at midmorning? I mean, seriously! What are they thinking?!?!! Just leave it alone the way it is right now because yes, we are back on REAL Time! Also, I only had to switch the clocks on the microwave and the coffeemaker. I’d left all the other non-electornic device clocks on real time. Yeah, I’m all lazy like that. But…now I’m so used to looking at the neon wall clock and adding an hour that I’m been confused on time since getting up yesterday. 🙄

In other news, sales for MOONLIGHT MAFIA: BOSTON haven’t been particularly awesome. Low numbers but steady which is something, I guess. I do wish readers would take the time to drop at least a rating if not a full review on the sites where they bought their copy. Y’all don’t realize how things like that affect the algorithms and boost visibility. 📚💲

Okay, end of whine. In other news. WEATHER! Holy Springtime, Batman! You’d thing it was May instead of November around here. Flooding rain and tornadoes over the weekend and more rain today. We NEED the rain so not complaining but Mother Nature could have left the swirly things tucked in the back of her closet. They missed us but the areas in the state–including the SW and SE-NE metro areas were hit hard. 😞🌪⛈

Stormy was here most of last week during school hours. He had/had walking pneumonia but got much better after his doc got him on some antibiotics. He was feeling good enough for a family dinner at our local pizza place to belatedly celebrate Only’s birthday. Good food, better company, and a cool moment for a family also eating there. Dad brought his daughter over right after we arrived to see what kind of dog Jake is and to ask if she could pet, which of course she could. Turns out they have a mini Pyrdoodle (Pyrenees miniature poodle mix and don’t ask me how that happened because…logistics! 😲 ) who was at a nearby emergency vet clinic having surgery because it ate a sock. Later, Dad came back with his younger son who wanted to pet the big dog and to let us know their pupper had come through fine and would recover fully. We were glad Jake could take the little ones’ minds off their pup.

I need to get back to work today after my Wallyworld run. I need to get MIDNIGHT CLEAR updated and uploaded to Draft2Digital for wide distribution on December 9th when it comes off Kindle Unlimited. That’s a matter of getting the backmatter switched over to blind links rather than ‘Zon links. Then I think I’m going to pull MOONSTRUCK GENESIS: RETRIBUTION off the back burner and finally get that “series” finished. That’s a matter of matching up two Moonstruck books, and a novella and adding some transitions. Aftet that, it’s a toss up between my other 3 series. I’ll see who starts jabbering at me the loudest.

I’m sure other stuff has happened but I’m still time deprived at the moment. How are the rest of you handling the time change?

Friday Sinema: Practically Magical

Happy All Soul’s Day. I hope everyone surived All Hallow’s Eve with all treats and no tricks. Today, I’m sharing one of my favorite movie endings and perfect for this particular holiday season. I really need to pull out my copy and give it a watch now that little ghosties, beasties, goblins, pirates, princesses, WWE wrestlers and trash collector aren’t ringing my doorbell. 😉 Have a great weekend!
