Road less traveledYes, it’s Wednesday. Again. I sure wish I could figure out where time goes. I mean…there’s 24 hours in a day, right? And considering I only sleep 4-6 hours, that leaves somewhere between 18-20 hours in which to be productive and get things done. Yet so often by the time I crawl into bed, my to-do list is longer than I started in the morning and while I know I’ve marked somethings off, it really seems I haven’t.

Which is a really weird segue into thoughts on marketing. Saturday’s program at OKRWA was presented by the really cool gals of Fresh Fiction, Gwen and Sarah Reyes. They were full of advice on how an author can get noticed, suggestions on ways to interact with readers, and stuff like that there. They said an author MUST HAVE a newsletter. Ouch. But they’re right, in a way. There are some review sites that won’t look at a book unless the author can prove up a following. How does one do that? A mailing list. Ugh, right? Yeah. My sentiments exactly. They don’t want the addresses, just the numbers, and proof that you contact that many. Don’t ask. So…in the New Year, I’ll be initiating a newsletter and begging asking folks to sign up.

The other thing they suggested, and I think it’s kind of cool and am much less resistent to the idea, is author swag for fans to buy. Tee shirts. Tote bags. Pens. Mugs. Notebooks. Stuff. I’ll be revisiting this idea too, probably with a poll. But let’s do an informal poll here. What sort of author/book/series items would you be interested in? And who’s ready for the weekend?

The weekend can not come fast enough – it’s only Wed. and I’m exhausted!

Wow, interesting about the marketing/promo stuff – a newsletter, eh? I’ll sign up, Silver. But, wow, that just adds an extra writing task to your already busy writing day. I even more exhausted thinking about that!

As for swag – I like me some bookmarks (always misplacing my bookmarks) and pens/notebooks (the two I won from you back when you were promoting Faerie Fate have come in very handy)/sticky notes…OK, anything school supply related 😉 But I don’t go out of my way to ‘win’ swag (ie comment on a blog that isn’t a regular for me just because they’re giving stuff away). My two cents’ worth.

4 -6 hours? How do you survive on that, says me who is up early because of the dog 😦 and is grumpy because I’ve only had 8 1/2 instead of my 9 1/2!!

I’ve gotten by on that amount of sleep for years. Between insomnia and other stuff, it’s rare for me to sleep in unless I’m sick. I’m making notes on the swag! Not doing anything “proactive” until after NaNoWriMo. 😆

  2. I’m with Janet. How do you exist on 4-6 hrs of sleep? I’m draggin’ butt if I get less than 7, but I really need 8. I wonder if it’s a ‘growing up in the north’ thing. (Of course, I don’t know where you grew up, so my theory could be full of holes.)

You’ve got to be kidding me that they’ll only review your book if you can prove a following. What? So your ‘following’ will hop over and become their following? How about they prove they have a following and you’ll let them review your book? :smirk: Yeah, like that’ll ever happen. I’ll sign up for your newsletter, Silver. Hey, do you get Allison Brennan’s newsletter? I like how hers is set up. She gets right to the point without a lot of sundry unnecessary fluff. And one thing about newsletters – be consistent. If you say you’ll be putting one out monthly or quarterly or whatever, make sure you do so. It’s the only way I remember I actually signed up for one of them.

As for swag, I like t-shirts, but I never wear marketing Ts anywhere except for bed, so they aren’t the best marketing tool with me. I love pens – but they have to be really awesome to write with and then I hoard them. Bookmarks are always awesome. Magnets are cool. So are tote bags and mugs. What you really want is something your readers will appreciate, but also something they’d likely use in public (or ideally leave somewhere in a public place – which is why pens and bookmarks rock). Oh, if you could do a neat keychain, that might be good. People carry their keys everywhere.

Ready for the weekend? It’s only Hump Da-ay. Talk to me on Friday and I’ll let you know. =o)

I’ve managed to miss Allison’s! I’ll have to check it out. I’m all for NOT spamming people so maybe quarterly or every other month. Or something. I’d like to do something special like maybe a deleted scene or short bit of backstory that wouldn’t be n the books or on the website as incentive. Something really short, almost like flash fiction set in one of my worlds. Yes? No?

  3. Wow. I just re-read my comment up there and I sound like a terrier on speed. I blame NaNo.

Got something to say?
