Wednesday Words: Spin Right Round

The end is drawing nigh… At least the end of 2021. Time marches inexorably on as this big blue marble spins on its axis and days between weeks. Months become years. Wow. You’d think today’s #1lineWed THEME was somehow deeply philosophical. It’s not. Our prompt today is **SPIN**, and if anyone is still watching the news these days, there’s a whole bunch of that going on. Which fit right in with where I last stopped on the Boston Wolves WIP. Anyway, here’s some fresh words on it. I think the scene is pretty much self-explanatory.
****
The huge black wolf stood in the stand of trees across the street. A sub-vocal growl rumbled in his chest. Neighbors had come out of surrounding houses and they gathered on sidewalks to speculate and gossip. The wolf ignored them. He’d been here since leaving Danny Boy’s warehouse in the pre-dawn dark. He’d covered the miles between there and here with a ground-eating lope. He hadn’t left. He watched these men approach his mate’s den. He’d seen her face and caught a faint whiff of sweet clover, her natural scent. What surprised him was the overlaying aroma of baby powder. Not the magnolia scent of sadness, not wet ashes and dead roses. No, she didn’t regret her husband’s death. Baby powder. Relief.

He cocked his head, curious now. Maybe the things his human half had thought were wrong. The wolf had understood but the man was too stubborn to listen. She was their mate. She was free now. And no one would ever hurt her again.

He settled into the underbrush, muzzle on his front paws. This sideshow would continue for some time. That was fine. He had no place else to be. He was content to be close to watch over her. He perked up when two men in uniforms with lots of gold braid and buttons crossed the street in deep concentration. They spoke in low voices, glancing around them constantly to make sure no one could hear what they said.

“The media will be all over this story,” the older of the two said.

“We need to be careful how we spin this.” The second man snorted and rolled his eyes. “I knew we’d have to cover up the fucker one day, but this?

They didn’t speak for several minutes, instead watching the circus occurring in front of the Gallagher house.

“Did you see her face?” the older said.

“Let’s hope none of the photographers were close enough to get a look.”

The first, who wore the most shinies on his uniform, spat on the ground. “We can’t pony her up for interviews until she heals.”

“That or a good makeup artist. We have to parade her in front of the media sooner than later, but we need a good story first.” The younger man watched another media van drive down the street. “We can say he went down in the line of duty.”

“We do that, there’s no fuckin’ way we can’t let pictures of his body leak. There’ll be no denying that was payback.”

The spin-artist lit up like a Christmas tree. “We need to stage a scene. ASAP. Get one of the working girls. Gallagher came to her rescue with a bad john and the john shot him. We’ll pay her off, ship her out to Providence or somewhere.” He paced off a few steps and then back. “Yeah. Yeah. That’s the ticket.” A grin split across his face. “We’ll finger someone for it based on her description.”

The older man nodded. “All right then. Get on it.”

The wolf had let the man’s consciousness come a little closer to the surface to make sense of the words. If the animal held sway, he’d just rip out the throats of everyone there and be done with it. The man? He had other ideas.
****
And there you have it. FYI, wolf and man is Devlin. That part came out in the previous chapter. Which is a big ol’ spoiler. That chapter, not that Devlin is a wolf. 😉 Ahem. Writers, you got any spin in your stories? Readers, would you rather spin on a merry-go-round or spin a top?

Tuesday Treats & Titles: Cool Whip Snickerdoodles

When a horde of hungry Wolves and their families land in your pasture, the smart retired Army wife hits her pantry and whips up cookies that go with coffee, tea, or hot chocolate. Talk about easy peasy! Five ingredients. Fifteen minutes to whip up, Fifteen minutes to bake. And then it’s time to make the yum!

Total Time: 30 Min.
Prep Time: 15 Min.
Cook Time: 15 Min.
21 Servings, 2 cookies each

Learn to make this COOL WHIP Easy Snickerdoodle Recipe for the holidays. This easy snickerdoodle recipe is a simple way to perfect a classic dish.

What You Need
1/3 cup sugar
1-1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 pkg. (2-layer size) yellow cake mix
1 tub (8 oz.) COOL WHIP Whipped Topping, thawed
1 egg

Let’s Make It
1 – Heat oven to 350ºF.
2 – Combine sugar and cinnamon in medium bowl.
3 – Beat remaining ingredients in large bowl with mixer until blended. (Dough will be thick and sticky.) Use 2 small spoons to drop dough, 2 tsp. at a time, into sugar mixture; toss until dough is evenly coated with sugar mixture.
4 – Place dough, 2 inches apart, on parchment-covered baking sheets.
5 – Bake 13 to 15 min. or until edges are lightly browned. Cool on baking sheet 1 min. Remove to wire racks; cool completely.

Kitchen Tips
Tip 1 – Chocolate-Cinnamon Crinkle Cookies: Prepare using a devil’s food cake mix.

Tip 2 – Mindful Eating: Treat yourself on occasion to bite-size tastes of indulgent foods.

My Tip – I used a Betty Crocker white cake mix (NOT angel food!). The dough is VERY gooey but once you drop a ball of it in the cinnamon sugar, you can roll it around to coat and pick up and put on the cookie sheet with fingers. I’m a hands-on baker like that. LOL Lawyer Guy gives them 👍🏼👍🏼. Me, too.

My Food & Family always comes up with the easty treat that just hits the spot. so click over to their website for all the nutritional details. Wondering which character was referenced in my intro? That would be Nona Klaussen, wife of retired Army General Nick Klaussen, both of whom appear in the Wolves’ take on “Die Hard,” the Christmas movie. You can read the whole story in CHRISTMAS MOON. It’s still free to read with a Kindle Unlimited subscription, for a limited time only. Otherwise, grab yourself a copy as a present to yourself. Just click on the cover or the title to get yours. (Edit–see My Tip above!) I haven’t made these yet but the ingredients were on my grocery list so I’m ready to do some quick baking! I’ll let you know how good they are. What about y’all? What’s your favorite Christmas cookie?

Monday the 13th

Call me weird but I’ve never considered Friday the 13th as an unlucky day. Monday the 13th, however? Well, you can make up your own mind. We’re almost half-way through December. Christmas is less that two weeks away. I’m not doing the muppet flail yet. Yet  being the operative word. This also means that the New Year is about 3 weeks away. Not that I’ll be sad to see 2021 bite the dust. Frankly, it and 2020 have done a pretty good job of biting me in the @$$.

Stuff happened. Not much. At least not here. East of here? Yikes! The footage from Arkansas, especially Kentucky, and Illinois are just…boggling. Tennessee was also hard hit and I finally saw footage from there. The pictures and video looks like historic pictures of WWII war zones after massive bombing runs and/or artillery attacks. Or in my case, a little closer to home, Moore, twice. The first time Moore was hit with a big one, I ended up in the command center as the Resource Commander. My job was to locate people, equipment, and supplies and get them into the working crews’ hands. There was no game plan, no blueprint. We sort of made it up as we went along. Every time I hear one of the local officials interviewed, I just want to get in the car and get there and say, “Here, this is where we start!” It’s the things you don’t really think about–Porta-potties (for rescuers and volunteers certainly, but also for the locals because–no running water! Another pressing need they won’t think about until they’re desperate is tires. And flat tire repair. There are nails, screws, and other debris everywhere. You can’t move trucks, crews, or equipment around on flat tires. Gas and diesel. And propane. We got lucky. The transportation director for the county showed up and offered fuel tanker trucks capable of pumping the fuel directly into vehicles. There’s more but unless you’re in EOC, you probably won’t be too interested.

While I’m on the topic, though, here’s a bit of personal advice: have copies of all your personal info–birth certificates, IDs, medical cards, prescriptions, etc. in a “go bag” and know exactly where it is. Even with little advance warning, you can grab the bag and keep it with you. Other things for the bag: phone and battery backup. A charger won’t work until you get somewhere with electricity, but doesn’t hurt to have one with you too. We recommend a case of bottled water for each person and pet in the family. In your go bag, have work gloves, a long-sleeve shirt, sturdy boots/shoes (unless you wear such most of the time and your first thought is to shove your feet into sturdy footwear), and a baseball cap. It helps keep dirt and sun out of your eyes. Eyeglasses/contacts. Any life-necessary medicines (like insulin) need to be grabbed on your way to shelter. Have a plan. Practice it. A lot. Because trust me, you need to run on instincts if the worse happens. Hearts and prayers to those in need.

In other news, I got a wild hair. I started with the idea of Sade and Sinjen (The Penumbra Papers) taking a pre-Christmas trip to New Orleans for some R&R. The whole Schooby Gang ends up there because Santa is involved. The good news is, I have just over 2K written on this free Christmas story. The bad news is, I still have no real idea of the plot. Hopefully, Santa will help me out. The Boston Wolves are on hold while I’m working on the unnameed Christmas freebie. Shoot. I need a “cover” too. Argh. I’m insane. Obviously.

Book listening was productive last week. I finished up with Jayne Castle’s Harmony/Ghost Hunters/Rainshadow/Illusion Town series. GUILD BOSS was pretty good. I then skimmed through a paranormal anthology that I thought I’d read back in the day. If I had, I didn’t remember any of the 3 novellas. It was okay. I’m currently back with Jayne, listening to her St. Helen’s series, which is also a SciFi/Paranormal romance, and precursor to the Harmony series. I’ll still need 7 books to hit my goal by the end of the year and I have no clue what I’ll pick up after this trilogy. Ah well.

Christmas shopping is going. Stormy’s last present arrives this week. We have ideas for Only and Baseball Boy, and maybe Uncle Fix-It. Aunt Hooey? Not a clue-y. LG and I are giving little stuff to each other during the family gift exchange because we are doing upgrades on some stuff around the house that benefits us both–like the Deco Wi-Fi Mesh System. It’s like a magic Wi-Fi booster for the computers, phones, and TVs. We have AT&T U-verse and there were times when the net slowed up and the streaming didn’t stream. Now that the mesh is installed, it’s awesome! There are other things on the list that we’ll grab as prices hit good spots. I suppose I should start wrapping. Oh, and stay on the hunt for stocking stuffers. That gets harder every year! Tis the season, Ho, Ho, Ho. I need to start watching Hallmark Christmas movies.

And that’s it for me. Question for the day: Christmas movies, yay or nay? And a bonus question: “Die Hard” is a Christmas movie, yay or nay?

Friday Sinema: Christmas Shopping

Okay. I’ll admit, I’m mostly easy to shop for, as far as my family is concerned. They also say I’m boring. I am. I want Amazon gift cards so I can buy audio books. I want Starbucks cards so I can buy frappucinos. Oh. And my wolf calendars for my office and the kitchen. See? Easy peasy.* That does not mean that the rest of my family are the same. Which is why this this made me laugh. Is it eally just a southern thing or do those of you in the rest of country feel the same way? 😉

*Caveat: Do NOT send me presents!

Thursday Thoughts: Universal Getting Physical

I commented to a friend yesterday about how writing is a physical activity–in it’s own way. Sitting at a computer day in and day out does take a physical toll on a body’s body. Neck. Shoulders. Back. Wrists. Hands. Even legs. I have to remind myself to get up, move around, stretch. I have to do the same for my eyes, remembering to look up and out the window so my distance vision gets exercised too. This reminder from the Universe recently showed up in my inbox.

Silver, to make hard tasks easy, mountains molehills, and challenges simple, you can opt for one of two paths. You can be still, wait for guidance, and expect spontaneous enlightenment.

Or you can just roll up your sleeves and get busy doing what you can, with what you’ve got, from where you are.

May I suggest the latter? It’s usually much faster. And it makes you a lightning rod for divine guidance and spontaneous enlightenment.

Hi-ho,
The Universe
©www.tut.com

Silver, sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is to get physical.

Now, lets get to the other perspective this message gave me. See, I haven’t done much writing lately, which is sorta sad given that I call myself a writer. My brain doesn’t want to engage. Or something. I could call it writer’s block. That’s always a good excuse, but as the Universe points out above, I have two choices. I can sit and stare out the window (resting my eyes, don’cha know!) while waiting for inspiration to strike. Or, I can get my hands on the keyboard and start typing out words. I can complete the task of creating new words simply by typing them. I’m a writer. I have a Muse, even if Iffy is being mostly recalcitrant at the moment. I know that you can’t fix a blank page. I know that bad writing can be turned into good writing with edits and revisions, but if there are no words there, that’s rather hard to accomplish. So, time to roll up my sleeves, because the Universe is right. Once I start typing out words, I do become a lightning rod for guidance and enlightment. So, I’m getting physical today. How many of you are now humming the Olivia Newton John song? 🙋🏼‍♀️

Wednesday Words: It’s About Time

Time flies. It’s already Wednesday again and we have a time-sensitive THEME for #1lineWed. Do you have time to read a snippet? And it’s about time that I reveal the prompt, yeah? In case you haven’t had time to figure it out, it’s **TIME**. Sorry. I’m typing this on very little sleep, not enough coffee, and slight aftereffects from my booster shot. Anyway, TIME plays a big role in the current WIP. I pretty much used the word in every single chapter. I do believe that’s a first. Anyway, this scene involves Ronan, the underboss of the Boston Wolves and Devlin, his main enforcer. It’s pretty self-explanatory. I think. If not, I plead sleep, coffee, and shot.
****
Ronan poured Devlin a glass of the good Irish whiskey. The man tossed it back in one gulp. Worried, he studied Dev. Haunted. Whatever had occurred this day marked him and not in a good way. Ronan’s wolf was restless, sensing Dev’s animal. They were pack. They ran together when they could get out of the city but his wolf knew the other was wounded, just as the man was.

“Talk to me,” he ordered with a soft edge to his voice.

“Feckin’ cop needs t’die. Yesterday.”

“Not yet.” Ronan reared back at the feral snarl coming from the steadiest man in the crew. “What the hell, Dev?”

“The boat was his. He was on it. Runnin’ booze, cigarettes, and drugs. Not huge numbers but enough. He docked in New Bed, off-loaded. One of Danny Boy’s men oversaw the divvying up.”

So far, that’s what Ronan expected to hear but this was a routine smuggling drop. What had Dev running so hot?

Dev held out the Irish crystal glass. Ronan filled it again. Dev tossed the whiskey back and swiped a hand over his mouth. “His wife. She’d gone down the Cape after church, with some girlfriends. The three friends gotta be single. They were flirtin’ with everything with a dick. But not my girl. No. She stayed in those pants that aren’t pants but aren’t shorts.”

“Capris,” Callum added helpfully.

“Whatever. No bathin’ suit. Sat under the umbrella like she’d be in trouble if she got a sunburn.” He scrubbed at his hair with his free hand. “Fuck me, Ronan.” His voice broke and the four men in the office with him all winced.

They exchanged worried looks but no one spoke. “I followed the feckin’ cop. In a feckin’ boat. And then I had to feckin’ hitch a ride to get my car. He went home, near as I can tell. Got there after dark. Not sure how much he beat me by but that damn BMW was in the driveway.” He shuddered, his whole body shaking as he held out his glass once more. Silently, Ronan filled the glass again. And again, Dev drained it in one chug. “And then I heard it. Heard the accusations. Heard the punches and the cries and—”

“Fuck.” The word came from three throats simultaneously. Ronan was the only one who remained silent.

“Why does she take it?” he implored Ronan, his dark eyes swimming with tears. “He almost killed her tonight. And why? For goin’ to fuckin’ church and then to the beach for a damned picnic with her girlfriends.”

“What is she to you, Devlin?” Ronan kept his voice soft and even as he stood and crossed to the other man.

“I don’t feckin’ know but I feckin’ felt every goddamned blow he landed on her.”

Without a second thought, Ronan drew the big man into his arms and hugged him. In his ear, he whispered the words Devlin had been praying for. “It’s time.”
****
So, time waits for no man. Writers, do you have time to share some timely words? Readers, what do you wish you had more time to do?

Tuesday Treats & Titles: Chocolate-Peanut Butter Swirled Bark

One of my favorite places in the world to go around Christmas time is New Orleans. I always try to stay in the historic Hotel Monteleone in the French Quarter. The lobby is decorated in spectacular fashion and the streets of the Quarter are festooned with all the trimmings of the season. Pralines are the featured candy down there but when I first saw this recipe, I thought it would fit right into the Quarter.

Total Time: 1 Hr. 20 Min.
Prep Time: 20 Min.
Cook Time: 1 Hr.
Servings: 14

If you can melt chocolate, you can make this scrumptious Chocolate-Peanut Butter Swirled Bark studded with cranberries and pistachios.

What You Need
1-1/2 pkg. (4 oz. each) BAKER’S White Chocolate (6 oz.), melted
1/3 cup creamy peanut butter
2 pkg. (4 oz. each) BAKER’S Semi-Sweet Chocolate, melted
1/3 cup dried cranberries
1/3 cup pistachios, coarsely chopped

Let’s Make It
1 – Mix white chocolate and peanut butter until blended.
2 – Drop spoonfuls of white chocolate mixture and semi-sweet chocolate alternately onto waxed paper-covered baking sheet; swirl gently with knife. Sprinkle with cranberries and nuts.
3 – Refrigerate 1 hour or until firm. Break into pieces to serve.

Kitchen Tips
Tip 1 – Size Wise: Balance your food choices throughout the day so you can enjoy a serving of this easy-to-make candy.

Tip 2 – Substitute: Prepare using PLANTERS Peanuts or Slivered Almonds. (Me: YES PLEASE!!!)

As always, click on over to My Food & Family for all the nutritional details of this recipe. Those of you who follow my author’s page over on that FB place know that I featured Nikos Constantine in Saturday’s post. Nikos is a dragon shifter and he and Sade Marquis, my favorite preternatural FBI agent, first meet and lock horns in New Orleans, I though I’d feature a favorite treat of his. Also, I’ve created a fictional candy shop down on Jackson Square. Aunt Sugar’s Chocolate Emporium, and it will be featured the next time Sade and the Scoobie Gang hits NOLA. Heck, maybe I’ll even get motivated and write a Christmas story set there. Anyway, if you enjoy Urban Fantasy with a wide variety of characters, you should give my Penumbra Papers series a look-see. Start with THAT OL’ BLACK MAGIC, which is the first book in the series and where Sade and Nikos first meet. It’s available from lots of on-line booksellers and if your library uses Hoopla, you can grab it there and read for free. Just click on either pic featuring the cover or the title and you’ll be whisked away by the magic of the internet to Books2Read where you can find the book’s link at your favorite store. Okay, readers. Tell me. Where’s your favorite Christmas destination and/or your favorite Christmas candy?

December Monday

Tomorrow is Pearl Harbor Day. For those of us who are history buffs. And we’re on the downhill slide to Christmas. Hanukkah ended last night. December is always such a busy month. That said, there was a week, a weekend, and a new week is beginning.

In family news, Saturday was siren test, which was a bust, but the James Gang still met up for lunch at our favorite Mexican resaurant. Everyone was in place for the test Saturday, but there was a glitch in the matrix. LOL Ah, well, next month, weather permitting. We’ll still get together because we need our Mex-food fix.

In sports news, Championship weekend was full of upsets. OSU lost a heartbreaker in the final seconds to Baylor. 😞 We’ll face Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. We ended up #9 on the season. #16 OU plays Oregon in the Alamo Bowl. Tulsa gets a bowl game, too, playing Old Dominion in the Myrtle Beach Bowl. Also, the MLB is still in lock-out status. This gives me a big ol’ sad because this time of year, I start counting down to pithcer-catcher.

I’ll admit I didn’t do much in the way of new words last week. I did get a couple of scenes edited and added on to and a new scene written but I was still “suffering” with a little burn out from NaNoWriMo. This week also includes back-matter updates on a couple of books coming off KU and going wide. That’w writerly stuff that’s not very exciting except that more of my books are hitting a wide variety of on-line bookstores.

In reading news, I’m finishing up the last “old” book in Jayne Castle’s Harmony/Ghost Hunters/Rainshadow series with ILLUSION TOWN. Once I’m done with it, I’ll be startig her new rlease in the series, GUILD BOSS. After that, I’m not sure what I’ll pick up. I’m at 186 books read/listened to this year. My goal is 200. It’ll be close but I think I’ll make it. Still no clue what I’ll grab next.

Boone has a new bed. It’s big–like it takes up a big portion of the family-room floor but he likes it so…whatever. He’s old. He gets a big soft bed, especially if it keeps him out from under my desk at least part of the time. We’re now in the market for another large bed (if not quite as huge as the one LG found!) to go in my office. Loki got to see Squirrelvision last week. Birdvision is alway entertaining but fuzzy/furry long-tailed critter swining in the birdfeeder? Best. Show. Ever! Until he bonked his head on the window trying to catch it. I didn’t laugh. Much!

Not a lot else going on in my neck of the woods. Today is a busy day–errandy-type stuff with LG that will take us from one side of the metro to the other. Not sure when I’ll be back in the chair to work, or if my brain will be settled enough to concentrate. I do have goals for the week–get BLUE MOON ready for wide release, write new words, Christmas shop, find the Christmas card I bought last year for this year…

What about y’all? What’s up in your world? Got goals for the week?

Friday Sinema: Hobbit Airlines

Long story short. I was listening to “I Was Shipping Up to Boston” by the Dropkick Murphys as inspiration for a scene in the Boston Wolves. THIS video popped up once it finished. After I quite laughing, I grabbed the link to share with y’all today. Even if you aren’t a fan of Middle Earth, I think you’ll appreciate this one. Have a great weekend, all!

Thursday Thoughts: Universal Goals

November is done. I came to the end of National Novel Writing Month with just over 50K words written in MOONSTRUCK MAFIA: BOSTON. My goal is to get finished by the end of the year so it can get edited, proofed, formatted and uploaded right after the first of the year. Not sure that will happen because…damndang. This sucker is turning out to be a complicated–and long–story. I may have to shift some long and short-range goals before all is said and done. Which brings me to today’s message from the Universe.

Enjoying short-term pleasures at the expense of long-term dreams is just about as silly as pursuing long-term dreams at the expense of short-term pleasures.

Silver, pursue both.

I do,
The Universe
©www.tut.com

Kind of like, have your cake, Silver, and eat it too.

I like cake! Having it and eating it. And pie. Cookies. Brownies. Ice cream. Ahem. I digress. Change the word pleasures to the word tasks and dreams with projects and you have my topic for today’s essay on writing. This is especially true in self-publishers but it also applies to traditionally published authors too. See, writing and putting a book out into the world is a process. Writing, editing, revisions, proofs. All of that takes time and there’s often periods of inactivity between each step. Experienced writers put that time to good use. They start the next project. And the next. And so on. It’s like being on a hamster wheel but not quite as boring or as exhausting physically. 😉 My ponit is, writers need to have both short and long term goals and they should learn to mesh those goals so that tasks become pleasures and projects become fulfilled dreams. Right? Let’s get out there and work on those pleasures and dreams!

So, tell me. If you going to have your cake and eat it too, what kind of cake? Me? I’m kinda craving a chocolate cake with rocky road icing.
