Thursday Thoughts: Universal Voices

My voices have been very quiet of late and that always makes me really nervous. Of course, there are those who would say that the voices make me crazy. They do. The voices, I mean. And I get lonely when they aren’t jabbering at me. Which they haven’t. When the Universe dropped this advice into my inbox, I realized I needed to take it. So…

Relax. Breathe in deep. Hold it. Let it out. Loosen your shoulders. Smile. Close your eyes. And Silver, you’ll be surprised at how many voices you’ll hear, whispering sweet encouragement into your ear.

Kissey, kissey, you can do it –
The Universe

Be still, Silver, be calm, and listen. You’ll find there’s nowhere you can’t go, no challenge you can’t master, and no reason whatsoever that you can’t have it all.

I can–and will–do it. I’ve places to go, challenges to master, and by George, I will work to have it all. So there! 😛

Wednesday Words: Curious Curiosity

We live in a curious world that is made more wonderful by curiosity. At least that was my thinking when I picked this week’s #1lineWed theme. As you’ve probably guessed, if you are curious at all, the theme is **CURIOUS/CURIOSITY**.

I thought I’d do something a little different this week. This snippet is from October’s Harlequin Desire, THE COWBOY’S CHRISTMAS PROPOSITION. Even though it has a release date, I’m currently doing line edits so it’s technically still a Work In Progress. Right? Right! So, here’s a little advance peek at Quin Kincaid and Deacon Tate.

****
Quin was falling under his spell again. She had to stop this. “You realize Christmas is only five days away, right? Some great father figure, with no decorations.” She sounded snippy. That was good. No sexy, kissy thoughts about this man. Staying mad. That was the key.

“S’cuse me?”

“Never mind. The sooner this is done, the sooner I can get back to regular duty. This is my last day before three weeks of vacation.”

“Big plans?”

“Yeah. I’m flying to Aspen for a ski vacation.”

“With your boyfriend?”

“I don’t have one. Not that it’s any of your business.” The man had kissed her and he was just now getting around to asking if she was attached?

“So…you’re spending Christmas in a hotel?”

“Again, not your business.”

“Fine. Sorry for being curious. Have fun, but I think you’ll be surprised how lonely it can be.”

“Lonely? The resort is booked full. Hard to be lonely with a lot of people around.”

Hmmm. Of course. All those families and couples. Fun times.”

“You don’t have a clue. Maybe I booked a singles package,” she sniped.

He nodded sagely and made that hmmm sound in his throat again.

“Look, I’m not here to discuss my private life.”

Deacon raised his arms in a symbol of surrender. “Sorry. I thought we were friends.”

“We can’t be friends. This is my job.”
****
Poor Quin. She just doesn’t have a clue… 😆 Do I have any Curious Georges out there? Show us your curiosity and share some words from your WIP!

Tuesday Treats: No Bake Crispy Peanut Butter Balls

Now that Easter is over and we’ve raided the kids’ baskets and scarfed up all the Reece’s Peanut Butter eggs and bunnies, here’s a quick recipe to tide over our “addiction.” I’ll bet dollars to donuts that Jolie Davis Barron (The Cowgirl’s Little Secret) makes these for her “men”–Cord and CJ. 😉

No-bake Crispy Peanut Butter Balls
Servings: 40-50

INGREDIENTS
½ cup salted butter, softened
2 cups creamy peanut butter
3 cups powdered sugar
3 cups crispy rice cereal
2 cups chocolate chunks (preferably dark), for coating
PREPARATION
1. In a large microwave-safe bowl, add the butter and peanut butter. Microwave for 1 minute.
2. Using a fork, stir together the melted butter and peanut butter until smooth. 3. Microwave additional 20 seconds, as needed.
4. Add the powdered sugar and rice cereal to the bowl. Gently mix together until fully incorporated.
5. Using your hands, roll the mixture into approximately 40 1-inch balls. Place them on a wax paper-lined baking sheet and freeze for 15 minutes.
6. In a small microwave-safe bowl, add the chocolate chunks. Microwave for 60-75 seconds, stopping to check and stir every 30 seconds.
7. Drop the frozen balls in the melted chocolate one at a time, use a fork to roll around to ensure an even coating. Place back on a wax paper-lined baking sheet.
8. Garnish with additional rice cereal while the chocolate is still warm. Chill until the chocolate has set.
9. Enjoy!

Friday Sinema: Silent Comedy

I’m warped. I admit it. Totally and completely. I snorted coffee out my nose when I saw this “remake” of “Silence of the Lambs.” No longer a dark psychological suspense, it is ROMANTIC COMEDY!!!!! May you find lots of laughter this weekend. Have a good one!

Thursday Thoughts: Universal Trick

The lucky people are those who discover what it is they want to do with their lives. The truly lucky ones discover they can do that thing really, really well. The Universe has a way of summing things up…

The greatest trick and most subtle secret to doing anything really, really well, Silver, is loving that you get to do it at all.

And I’m pleased to say, you get to –

Love, Silver, is in the air.

I’m lucky that I discovered what I wanted to be when I grew up, that I get to do it, and yeah…I admit it. I love what I do. There’s no trick to it. 😉

Wednesday Words: April 19th

(c)Clary Carey 2013

Even 22 years later, April 19th still has a profound effect on my life, on my family’s lives, and the lives of thousands of Oklahomans. For those who don’t know, I was one of the first responders the morning a domestic terrorist took down the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. At the moment, I’m the one picking the themes for #1lineWed over on Twitter and I decided that for today, given the memories, and given the climate in the world today, that one word would suffice. Today’s theme is **PEACE**.

I’m working, slowly and not too surely, on Roman’s story. Roman, the gargoyle Sentinel who was Sade’s protector as she grew up, is the Legate of New Orleans. As the Magicks’ representative in the haven city, he’s charged with keeping the peace. Too bad there’s a not-quite-human who has him unsettled. Here’s a first draft of a scene from ALL THAT ECHOES (the working title and very likely not the final title). I hope you enjoy. And please…find a bit of peace for yourself today.

****
Roman stood at the window, a dark silhouette if anyone below chanced to look up. Early-morning fog swirled through Jackson Square, leaving the granite blocks and wooden benches with a silvery sheen as the first fingers of dawn poked through the gray miasma. Roman refused to count the number of times he’d stood here, waiting, watching.

As a bright swirl of color coalesced through the murk, the constricting pressure in his chest eased, a feeling he chose to ignore.

She was early this morning, lugging her wagon with the folding chairs, market umbrella, rickety wooden table, and her satchel filled with the exotic paraphernalia of her trade. Her tousled curls were tamed today, severe in a long braid snaking over one shoulder. Fog swirled around her, lightened, leaving her poised like an island tinted by riotous hues.

He didn’t know her name but this young woman with haunted shadows in her eyes and the fragile sheen of magic clinging to her skin like glitter drew him as inexorably as that proverbial moth. Would she singe his wings if he got too close?

He’d found no peace since the first morning she appeared in front of the cathedral. Her smile tugged at his heart even as his senses warred with the knowledge of what—of who—she was. Rogue. Unaligned. Unknown. The Witches’ Council knew nothing of her. Disturbing. The witches guarded their bloodlines as closely as they did their Book of Shadows.

She called to someone, her voice as musical as the birds who sang dawn awake. Something deep inside him stirred, something that had slumbered for hundreds of years. The parchment envelope with its splash of blood-red wax marked by Le Vieil’s seal sat on his desk, a pale indictment of his dereliction of duty. He should have left the city days ago but he could not force himself to go. Not so long as the flame-haired temptress danced through his dreams.

Be sure to share your peaceful words!

Tuesday Treats: Lemony Blintz Bake

Spring has finally sprung and my taste buds are thinking about yummy food more attuned to the season, which often means lemony goodness. Kraft Recipes site has become a go-to for me when looking for new ideas. I came across this easy treat and Kraft had this to say: “Our blintz is a great airy and lemony alternative to the usual brunch bake. Try this fluffy, not-too-sweet blintz made with Neufchatel and ricotta cheese.”

Prep Time: 15min.
Total Time: 1hr.
Servings: 16 servings

What You Need
2 pkg. (8 oz. each) *PHILADELPHIA Neufchatel Cheese, softened
1 container (15 oz.) *POLLY-O Natural Part Skim Ricotta Cheese
5 eggs, divided
3/4 cup sugar, divided
2 tsp. zest and 3 Tbsp. juice from 1 lemon
1 cup flour
3/4 cup butter or margarine, melted
1/4 cup milk
1 Tbsp. *CALUMET Baking Powder

Make It
Heat oven to 325°F.

Beat Neufchatel, ricotta, 2 eggs, 1/4 cup sugar, lemon zest and juice in large bowl with mixer until blended.

Whisk remaining eggs, sugar, flour, butter, milk and baking powder in separate bowl until blended. Spread 1/3 of the batter onto bottom of 13×9-inch baking dish sprayed with cooking spray; cover with Neufchatel mixture, then remaining batter.

Thursday Thoughts: Universal Happiness

I’ve stayed away from social media for quite awhile now. Oh, I have a few corners where I lurk, where I have to appear for various reasons, but then I crawl back into obliviousness because…well, to save some friendships. People both fascinate and confound me. In the past six months, there has been so much distress, hatred, vitriol, and unhappiness. Unhappy people make me unhappy. So I stay away. See, I happen to agree with the Universe on this one.

Happiness, dear Silver, is what greases the wheels of life. It’s also what opens the floodgates, marshals the forces, commands the elements, raises the sun, aligns the stars, beats your heart, heals what hurts, turns the page, makes new friends, finds true love, calls the shots, waves the wand, connects the dots, feeds your mind, frees your soul, rocks the world, and pays compound interest.

Yeah, so easy to forget.

Wild on,
The Universe

Don’t forget, Silver. Stay happy.

That’s my goal. I want to stay happy. How about you?

Wednesday Words: Words to the Wise

Once again, it’s time for #1lineWed on Twitter and today’s theme is all things **WISE**. Wisdom, wise guys (or girls), wise old owls, wise men…all are fair game for today’s inspiration from a WIP. In this scene, from October’s THE COWBOY’S CHRISTMAS PROPOSITION, our hero’s mother has invited our intrepid heroine for tea. And conversation…
****
Mrs. Tate sat regally, spine straight, shoulders square, chin up—her posture perfect. Quin had no trouble picturing this woman looking right at home in Downton Abbey. “I do appreciate you staying for a visit, Quincy. We’re still friends so I can call you Quincy, right?”

“Of c-course.” Darn it. Why did she have to stammer? Quincy steadied the china cup and saucer holding her coffee on her knee.

“Please call me Katherine. I suspect we might become better friends before all is said and done.”

Katherine smiled at her and while it looked benign enough, Quin saw the shark swimming behind the woman’s expression. Quin was skating on thin ice and she knew it. She nodded and offered a partial smile but kept her mouth shut.

“Since you have such a large place in my son’s life, Quincy, I thought it wise for us to get to know one another.”

“No ma’am.” At the woman’s raised brow, Quin scrambled to explain. “What I mean, ma’am, is that I have no place in Deacon’s life. I’m here only to deal with the baby during the course of my investigation. Once the mother is located and a determination is made about the best interest of the child, then I’m…”

“You’re what, Quincy?”

“No longer involved.”

“Are you involved?” That shark’s smile again. “With my son?”

“Good heavens no!” Quin wanted to bite her tongue. Time to backpedal. “What I mean is, your son…I…there’s… No. Just…no. We aren’t involved. Not like you’re insinuating. And we won’t be. I’m a state trooper doing my job. Your…Deacon…he’s…”

“Handsome?” Now Katherine’s smile was cat-and-cream smug. “Talented?”

“Ah…well, yes. Of course he is. But he and I…we aren’t…”

“Did you know my mother was a good southern woman?”
****
Don’t ever underestimate a GSW! And their non sequiturs, because they’ll box you in every time. Where readers loved to hate Cyrus Barron, I’m really hoping they love to love Katherine Tate. 😀 What about y’all, do you have any wise words to share today?
