Tuesday Treats: Crashed Hot Potatoes

Aussie Crash potatoesWhen I saw this posted on FB, I thought YUM! And easy peasy. However… 😆

The poster’s idea of “drizzle” and mine are totally different. Use more olive oil. And don’t boil the potatoes until they’re too soft. Then I couldn’t find my potato masher. (I had an antique one but it’s missing in action.) I used a large fork which worked fine. And I didn’t have fresh herbs so I used what was in the cabinet–basil and parsley. Despite some of the goofs, they did turn out to be pretty darn yummy. So, here are the instructions just as I stole them off FB.

Just boil some baby potatoes (I used red) until fork tender. Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Drizzle olive oil on a baking sheet, set potatoes on sheet and using a potato masher, gently smash each potato down, rotating masher both ways (so it looks like a thick cookie). Drizzle with olive oil, season with salt/pepper and sprinkle cut fresh herbs and garlic over each. THEN top with some lovely grated Parmesan cheese. Bake for 20 minutes. OMG…crispy on the outside, soft in the middle, salty, garlicky, herby and cheesy goodness. I need to make more now!!

Oh, I also used what we call “new potatoes” which are the small red-skinned ones. I need to have an Aussie character so s/he can introduce this dish in one of my books. 😉

Monday Squared

IgnoreMondayCatI wish I could but I sort of took the weekend off. Saturday was a stay-in-bed-read-and-nap day. All day. I’m still fighting this stupid respiratory crud. I should have been working the edits my editor sent for THE BOSS AND HIS COWGIRL. I’m not quite half-way done and it’s due back this Wednesday. So far, he’s really liked most of it. This is good. Between lack of sleep and med head, I’m not sure I can do justice to a major revision.

We had snow Saturday. Sort of. Not enough to freeze on the roads but enough to sort of cover the ground. It was cloudy and cold and a good day to stay in bed. As noted above. Yesterday, I slept in, did some research for a project, wrote this blog, and got a little editing in.

Reading: I did some. Two Thea Harrison books–the latest in her Elder Races series. SHADOW’S END left me in tears. LIAM TAKES MANHATTAN helped a little. I also read an historical anthology, THE LAST CHANCE CHRISTMAS BALL with Mary Jo Putney and Jo Beverly headlining. There were 8 stories and this is the first anthology I’ve read in awhile where I enjoyed all of them. The editor deserves massive kudos. I’m not a big historical reader but I saw this in either a new release or recommend book list and it caught my attention. My library had a copy so…*snatch*. I’m glad I did. I know I’ve read some other stuff but without Goodreads open or my Kindle, I couldn’t tell you. I’m ahead on my GR reading challenge so that’s good.

TV: Haven’t watched THE SHANNARA CHRONICLES yet. I should probably do that before the next episode to see if I want to continue DVRing it. While I haven’t read the books, I found it interesting that the author of the series is consulting in the production. I’m waiting for THE MAGICIANS on SyFy (sort of a dark and contemporary Harry Potter is college age) and LUCIFER on Fox. Yes, that Lucifer. He moves to LA and wreaks havoc. Fun times! Both start around the 25th, I think.

And that’s about the sum total of my week, weekend, and whatnot. The coming week is edits, getting health back to normal, and hopefully, the continuation of the proposal for RDR#7. And more reading. I also need to pick out an audiobook for my free credit from Audible for January. Anybody have suggestions?

What did y’all do this weekend? Any plans for the upcoming week? Whatever you do, stay healthy!

Friday Sinema: BACON!

I hate when I have “med head” and the post gets scheduled for the wrong time. Still, this video makes me laugh. A lot. And is worth waiting for–and watching again if you’ve already seen it. This kid has it going on, and boy, is he right! Have a great weekend, everyone. I’ll be slaving away at line edits and revisions on THE BOSS AND HIS COWGIRL and I can’t wait to reveal the cover. It’s perfect! 😀

Thursday Thoughts: The Universe Rings in 2016

winter glitter True story. I got this note from the universe back on January 1, 2015. I meant to use it for the first Thursday Thoughts to come along and didn’t. So I left it my draft folder. And when I needed a thought for today, guess what I found. So here’s what the Universe had to say a year ago. Only I changed the dates. But it’s message is still the same. So this year? My theme is definitely DREAM BIGGER! Who’s gonna dream big with me?

I want you to know, Silver, that I’ve ordered up another year for you.

Think I’ll call it 2016.

I’m going to put most of the same people from 2015 in it, since you all think so much alike. But there’ll also be a few new, very cool cats coming to play – give them some time to grow up though.

And I’m going to have things start off pretty much exactly where they left off in 2015, for continuity’s sake. Flips folks out too much when I don’t.

All in all, 366 more days in paradise and only one request of you:

DREAM BIGGER.

Coolio?

Let’s do this,
The Universe

Wednesday Words: New

wurkn-on-mai-plan-for-word-domination-caleb-pupThe #lineWed theme for this first week of the new year is very apropos. It’s “NEW.” I’m three chapters into the beginning of the newest Red Dirt Royalty story. As a brief rundown, Cash Barron runs Barron Security Services. There’s been a series of incidents at various Barron properties, all traced back a family of con men, the Rowlands. The heroine is the youngest Rowland sibling and only girl, Roxanne. Roxie is going to lead Cash for a merry chase, even if she doesn’t appear in this snippet. But…the word “new” does appear! 😀

****
Cash rubbed his eyes, a dull headache throbbing at the base of his skull. He’d watched hours of security footage in this crazy scavenger hunt. Had tracked the Rowlands from one Barron property to the next, interviewing employees, tracking down their marks, reading police reports. He made copious notes about the marks they chose, the way they set up the con, and cursed that he hadn’t have audio. He considered hiring a lip reader to transcribe the video but didn’t trust anyone outside of his tightly-knit executive group.

Tucker Tate, his cousin and the Vice President of Operations for Barron Entertainment, handed him a coffee and a bottle of painkillers. He tossed back a couple of the pills and chased them with the hot, black liquid.

“When did you tumble to their presence?” Cash asked not taking his eyes from the live footage.

“Yesterday when they checked in. That new facial recognition software you had installed worked like a charm. I have the footage if you want to look at it.”

“Just give me the rundown.”

“Max arrived first. Had reservations for a mini-suite under the name Roscoe P. Coltraine.”

Cash scrubbed at his forehead with the heel of one hand. “Why does that sound familiar?”

“Spelling’s different, but the name’s taken from a TV character–a redneck sheriff.”

“Oh, yeah. I remember watching reruns of that show. What about his sons?”

“Alexander and Ajax checked in together. Another mini-suite. Hamilton and Jackson Grant.”

“Please tell me you’re joking.”

“I wish. But it gets better.” Tuck’s voice hardened.

“Great. Go on.”

“Braxton checked in about an hour later. Lincoln Washington. And then Dexter checked in four hours ago. Reservations were for Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Cleveland.”

Cash sat up straight, whipping around to stare at the other man. “Hamilton, Jackson, Grant, Lincoln, Washington, Franklin, and Cleveland. Now they’re just trying to rub our noses in it.” His cousin looked confused so he laid it out. “Those are presidential last names. All of them. Except Franklin. But ol’ Ben’s still on the hundred dollar bill.”

“Damn. They’re all on money.”
****

And while it isn’t “new”, it’s new words and I figured y’all would like a glimpse at Roxie, so…

Roxanne Rowland lined her lips with red pencil before adding bright red gloss. The woman in the mirror staring back at her was a stranger. Dragging fingers through her red hair, she fluffed the waves, startled anew by the bright color tipping her nails. She wasn’t used to the manicure either. Dark, smoky shadows fringed her amber eyes. She refused to wear the tinted contacts sitting in a case on the counter.

Smoothing down the black, body-hugging dress, she opened the bathroom door and collided with her older brother. His arms gripped her biceps none too gently. “Time to go, Roxie.” He studied her a moment. “You didn’t wear the contacts.”

She winced at the accusatory tone in his voice. “They hurt and make my eyes water. I had to redo my makeup three times before I gave up.”

The fingers of his right hand squeezed her arm as he shifted and walked away, pulling her along. She wobbled on the stiletto heels and teetered for a moment as she scrambled to find her balance. The high heels were as foreign to her as the rest of her get up. She wore jeans. And boots. Not haute couture. Especially not a dress that cost close to a month’s salary—a dress she’d been told to tuck the tag inside and to be sure not to get it dirty. That meant it would be returned to the store for a credit.

“What’s going on, Dex?”

“You don’t want to know, little sister.”

“Yes, I do.”

“Max is working.”

Their father—whom they never called “dad.” “That doesn’t explain why I’m here. I don’t work with him.”

“You do now.” His voice remained implacable as he ushered her out of the hotel room. “This is big, Rox, and you’ll do your duty to the family. Or else.”
****

What about y’all? What new words do you have to share?

Tuesday Treats: Pecan Pie Bread Pudding

Pecan Bread Pudding A certain Only posted the video to my FB timeline and suggested I should try this recipe. I did. We all enjoyed it over Christmas. 😆 Please note that the picture is of a double batch. The recipe, as given, is better in a 9X9 baking pan.

INGREDIENTS:
4 eggs
2 cups of milk
1 1/2 cups half and half
16 oz. of crusty bread “cubed” (I used crusty rolls that I bought frozen, baked, and chunked up)

Mix wet ingredients and pour over bread

In saucepan, melt and mix

1/2 cup butter
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
1/4 cup corn syrup
1/8 teaspoon salt

Stir until sugar is dissolved and mixture is smooth.

Stir in 1 tablespoon vanilla
2 cups pecan halves

Pour over bread mixture and stir.

Cover with foil and bake in preheated 350° oven. Remove cover after 30 minutes and continue cooking for 15-25 minutes until custard is set and top bread is a little crusty. (45-55 minutes total baking time)

Serve warm. You can watch the video to see how it’s done, but I had to watch it more than a few times to get the ingredients down right. 🙂 Enjoy! And let me know if you make it.

First Monday 2016

New YearHappy New Year! Today should be a time for reflection and a time to look ahead. But where’s the fun in that? LOLOL Okay, seriously. Last year is a done deal. I can’t go back and change anything. Upon reflection, I’m not sure I would. I started out the year full of plans and ended the year burned out. This year, maybe I’ll be a little more realistic. Maybe. That said, this is a new year–a blank chapter in the Book of Life. I’m going to take the blank page and start writing on it.

So…publishing. I have a full slate, as always. We’ll see how much gets done, since I’m not making any carved-in-stone promises. Well, not many anyway. I want to do at least two Harlequin Desires, three if it works out. I want to finish the Barron brothers and start on the cousins, but the first Tate boy book is a Christmas story. I’ll be preparing two full proposals–meaning first 3 chapters and fairly detailed synopsis of RDR#5 (Cash’s story) and what should be RDR#7 (Deacon Tate’s story). I’ll do a detailed synopsis for RDR#6 (Kade’s story). Writing will be determined by cut-off deadline on the Christmas story if it gets picked up. I know THE BOSS AND HIS COWGIRL RDR#3 is releasing in June, 2016, followed fairly shortly thereafter by RDR#4 (THE BILLIONAIRE’S INCONVENIENT COWGIRL – working title). Those are pretty much set in stone.

My self-pub schedule includes a secret project due before October, which looks to have a Nightrider tie-in, plus Nightrider #2, Hard Target #2, Roman’s story in the Penumbra Papers (#4), and MOONSTRUCK: LIES. Yes, that’s a lot of writing. And editing. But I plan on being more organized this year. Hey! Stop laughing. It can happen. *looks around office…grimaces* Maybe. *shrugs* Anyway, that’s the plan.

With an eye towards that schedule, I’m setting a goal of an average of 1000 words a day. That’s 7000 words a week, 30,400 a month, which works out to yearly totals of 366,000 (per day and it’s a leap year), 364,000 (per week), or 364,800 (per month). That’s a lot of words. And that many words total up to a lot of books written. Since most of my books average 60K, that’s SIX books. Which is one less than I’d like to write. So I’ll have to write smarter. Haven’t quite figured that out yet. I’ll let you know if and when I do.

Travel: I’ll be in San Diego in July for RWA Nationals. That’s the only blip on my travel radar at the moment.

Blogging: Plans are to continue on the same schedule as 2015. There will be times when I either have nothing to say or I’m snowed under with deadlines. But, yeah, five days a week.

Reading: So many new books this coming this year! I started my reading challenge at 200. I was unofficially up around 250/260 at the end of the year. I stopped keeping count because most were rereads and some I couldn’t count officially because they were contest reads and there are anonymity rules. So… I also discovered the joy of audio books, but only for books I’ve already read. I can cook, do laundry, surf the web, and listen. This is great for rereading a series before the next book comes out. I can get some from my library system. Some, I can buy cheap because I already own the Kindle book. Others, I’ll slowly collect as I get my free monthly credit on Audible.

In previous years, I’ve picked a Word for the Year. I’m not doing that this year. This year, I’m taking Neil Gaiman’s words to heart. I’m sure most of you saw my New Year’s posts on my FB pages and on Twitter, but I’ll close out with it below. I wish the same for all of you. Time for me to start writing the next chapter. What about y’all? What will you write this year?

Post-Holiday Hangover or Why I Need More Coffee

Jim Hunt Coffee ForecastI have a bad case of the Lazies. I turned off my computer Christmas afternoon and didn’t turn it back on until yesterday. And it was a struggle to make myself get on-line then. Weird, huh? Between the wild weather (Oklahoma had all four seasons in one day on Saturday), the cold on Sunday and yesterday, and I just pretty much stayed in bed under the covers listening to audio books. Part of it is I’ve done something to my right shoulder/neck and sitting at the computer yesterday aggravated it. 😦 Part of it was I pushed hard through the end of November and then just sort of…collapsed, mentally/imaginationally anyway. And yes, I am award that “imginationally” is not a word. 😆

So, Christmas was good. Stormageddon had a fire truck and plane-filled Christmas. He might not be two yet but it took him about five seconds to figure out how to turn on, press the gas pedal, and go in his battery-operated fire chief’s vehicle. After opening presents at the kids’ house, we all trooped over to the BiL/Sil’s house for brisket, baked beans, relish tray, and bread pudding. We came home and took naps. Saturday, I did a Cajun-spiced turkey breast for sandwiches and we sort of grazed our way through the rain, thunderstorms, tornadoes, sleet, ice, and smidgeon of snow. Once again, I listened to audio books, napped, and waited for branches to fall and hit the house. I didn’t even turn on the computer come Sunday, hence no weekend wrap-up yesterday. I finally dragged myself out from under the covers around 11:00 and caught up with emails and Facebook. Then I headed back to bed for a nap before getting up to make a pot of chili.

I have discovered something about Audio books: I can only listen to books I’ve read before. And I mean, have physically read the words. I never did too well in my classes where the test were based on lectures. The classes where the tests came from the textbook? Aced those puppies! I do like listening to books, but the characters and plot need to be somewhat familiar for me to really keep track of what’s going on. Yeah, yeah. I’ve already admitted I’m weird!

As an aside, I’m going to take the rest of the week off from blogging. I really should be writing. Or marketing. Or something work/career-related but I refer you back to the title. I’m suffering from a holiday hangover and don’t want to do anything that I should. So…I’m going to take this time between now and the new year to assess this past year, look ahead to the new year, and figure out some things–all to the good. I’m also going to lay on the heating pad and use the Shiatsu massagers I have to try to work out the kinks in my neck and shoulder so I can hit the New Year at a dead run. So many books to write and a Sooper-Sekrit Project™ coming next fall. So I’m going to drink coffee, listen to favorite books (I met and exceeded my Goodreads challenge so no new books until Jan. 1 for the 2016 challenge), nap, catch up on the DVR, and just relax while I plan, letting my imagination regenerate by drifting along willy-nilly. Oh, and watch football. And eat. Because…that’s how I roll. LOLOL

What’s on your to-do list for this last week of the year?
