Thursday Thoughts: Universal Worldbuilding

For many people, their world has narrowed to the small space they call home. Social interaction with anyone but family or roommates is at a minimum and it’s much the same with the outside world. I’d probably be pretty frantic if I lived in a big city. I don’t, though. I live in the ‘burbs. I can look out my window and see trees and flowers. I can go into my yard or walk through my neighborhood. But I’m also a writer. I create worlds with a flick of my imagination.

I’m curious. Yes, that helps with being a writer, but that’s not what I’m curious about at the moment. I wonder if readers realize how much goes into worldbuilding? How much time we spend, how intricate it can get. I mean creating characters and plot is just a small part of the whole. It all has to mesh together in a cohesive whole so that the story makes sense. This is true no matter the genre but becomes especially so in fantasy–urban and epic, SciFi, paranormal, horror, and historical. Don’t get me wrong. Worldbuilding goes on in contemporary too.

In some ways, writers are like a minor god. We create our worlds and everything in them–places, things, people, and events, maneuvering everything from Prologue to Epilogue. Just like the Universe…

I have to tell you, Silver, that one of the greatest things about being the Universe, is knowing absolutely everything.

Well, that and making dreams come true.

I also love being eternal… and having no limits.

Creating worlds simply with thought.

Knowing that reality is unfolding just exactly as it should.

Having it all, being it all, doing it all.

And I like being perpetually in love… and loved.

How ’bout you, Silver? What’s your favorite thing about being the Universe?

Tallyho,
The Universe

Silver, don’t we rock!? Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ooooooooooooooooo!

Yes, Universe, we do rock. And my favorite thing is being a writer, in using my imagination to create. I love the worlds and characters I create. I love making their dreams come through–after making them work for it because that makes for a good story. It’s all in the details, and as writers, it’s up to use to fine-tune the details, get them right, and entertain the reader. Writers, do you have a worldbuilding trick or tip? Readers, what’s your favorite part of a story?

Wednesday Words: A Word to the Wise

Are you looking for some WISDOM? Or ENLIGHTMENT? This probably isn’t the place, even if those are the #1lineWed theme of the day. Just a word to the wise, if you are working from home and have no little eyes, keep reading. Otherwise, you might wan’t to save this snippet for “alone time.” Who remembers Dancer, the Irish Wolf who is the VP of the Oklahoma Chapter of the Nightriders? 🙋‍♀️ This is a scene from his story. Talk about a light bulb moment…
****
She stared up at me, a stinking cloud of ammonia surrounding her. She was bloody terrified. Of me. She should be. I was a nightmare stalking her world, and on some primal level she recognized the truth. I focused on the man next to her.

“F-for you,” he stuttered. “And I brought the information, just like you asked.”

The sickly-sweet scent of rotten apples overrode the ammonia. Asshole was lying.

“Adam?” Little bitch found her voice. “Wh-what’s going on?”

The prick shoved her my direction then scurried off like a rat. The cunt fell flat on her face as I stepped around her. Three strides later, I had the asshole. I’m a Wolf. I don’t lose prey, especially not this pissant. He thought he could screw the Nightriders. Not happenin’ on my watch.

“Gonna put you down you lie to me again.”

“N-not lyin’, man. Swear. Take her.”

The girl wasn’t moving. One-handed, I picked up the prick, held him, feet dangling. “Who is she?”

“Peace offering. For the Russian.”

“From who?”

“You know who.”

We were at war with the Hell Dogs. They didn’t make peace offerings. They made death. So did we.

“Enlighten me, boyo.”

“Joe Tex.”

Ah, and that would explain things. Joe Tex, the local drug dealer. He’d picked the Dogs, pissed on the Nightriders. Fatal error. We had a kill order out on him.

“Who is she?”

“Don’t know. Don’t care. I’m just the messenger. Joe said she has the info you’re lookin’ for.”

I tossed him in the Dumpster, strolled back to the girl. She’d managed to sit up. Her face was dirty. I smelled blood and scorched hair. She was panicking.

“What’s yer name, girl?”

“M-m-m…” A tear rolled down her cheek but she managed to spit out her name. “M-Meredith.”

“And why should I be keepin’ ya?”

Her eyes got huge as she gawked at me. “I-I don’t know.”

“I should just slit yer throat and walk away.” More tears fell. I ignored them, despite an ache growin’ in m’chest. “Just as soon kill ya both as stand here in the cold.”

“P-please. This is like a bad movie. I keep waiting for it to fade to black.”

“That happens, you’d be dead. Give me a reason t’take ya home and fuck ya.”

She clutched her jacket closed. “You’re crude. I don’t understand any of this.”

Her essential scent hit me. Well fuck me runnin’. A virgin. What the hell was goin’ on? I squatted in front of her, tilted her chin so she had to look at me. “Who are you, little girl? What makes you important to the Nightriders?”

“N-Nightriders? Oh, god.”

Her eyes rolled back as she passed out. I caught her head before it bounced on the pavement, pulled her into my arms.

“Fuck me. That’s Meredith Conroy, Dancer.”

I stared at Tinker, my backup. Bug-eyed, the MC’s enforcer stared back. Feckin’ hell. She was the enemy’s daughter. And m’mate.
****
Hope y’all enjoyed this NSFW peek into Dancer’s…personal problems. 🤣 Writers, do you have any wisdom or enlightened words to share? Readers, when–and what–was your last light bulb moment?

Y’all surely know the drill by now–all the details on this recipe are over at My Food and Family so just CLICK ON OVER if you want to see them. I “stole” this recipe from one of my favorite former Delta Force dudes, Brody Buchanan. The Wolf lived on his boat, and still spends a lot of time on it. His mate, former CIA assassin Zeta Cordero, doesn’t cook. Good thing Brody learned to fend for himself. He can whip up this recipe in the blink of an eye and serve the love of his life breakfast in bed–whether in her seaside home or on his boat. If you’d like to read their story, you can grab UNDER THE ASSASSIN’S MOON for free with a Kindle Unlimited subscription or buy it for you keeper shelf. This book is part of Susan Stoker’s Special Forces: Operation Alpha series. Just click on the book cover or the title to sail on over to Amazon to one-click it. 🙂

May Day Monday

Hello! It’s the first Monday of May, in case y’all are keeping track. There was a previous week and a weekend. And now it’s Monday, the day I consider the beginning of my week, even though I know that Sunday starts things off.

Things happened. Not many things but things.

With spring comes a change. I’ve thrown off the thick comforter and dark sheets of winter and now have the light sheets and chenile bedspread on. Mother Nature couldn’t make up her mind until last week so there’d been a delay in the switch. Sleeping light was really nice last night.

FLOWERS! The breeze is wafting through my open office window bringing the elusively sweet fragrance of honeysuckle. There are pink roses and purple irises and a white peony. Spring arrived late but it’s here finally and I hope it’s gets its due before summer rears it’s hot-headed presence.

TV is a mixed bag these days. I REALLY miss baseball. The Masked Singer who was unmasked last week turned out to be country star Hunter Hayes. I didn’t get any of the clues but that doesn’t surprise me. I watch because the costumes are crazy-cool and the talent is amazing. LIVE PD is doing what it can given the circumstances but I’ll be happy when it goes back to it’s regular 3-hour format. I’ve also been watching a couple of the ghost shows. They’re filler, mostly, because I usually end up rolling my eyes.

Reading/listening was a mix of new and old. I’ve been on a JD Robb In Death marathon, as y’all know. That’s been interspersed with books that drop from the library where I’ve had them on hold and stories a bit more light-hearted. Well, CASINO ROYALE isn’t that light. 😆 I grabbed the Ian Fleming classic for $1.95 in audio. Score! I love Fleming’s writing. I followed that up with Molly Harper’s whimsical paranormal romance, ALWAYS BE MY BANSHEE. I opened JUDGEMENT IN DEATH but then Danielle Trussoni’s THE ANCESTOR dropped from the library. It’s…hard to describe. I enjoyed it but have no clue how to classify it. There are supernatural elements, except…not. It’s very gothic in tone but there’s no hero. Anyway, it was odd and interesting and the author’s voice and story structure reminded me a bit of the early works of Mary Steward or Phyllis A. Whitney. Then I jumped into a relisten of Jennifer Estep’s Crown of Shards series, with KILL THE QUEEN. LOVE this book. I rolled over to PROTECT THE PRINCE and once done with it, I get to start the new release, CRUSH THE KING.

In writing news, I’ve rewritten the first 3K words of my 5K short story I hope to submit for an anthology. I have 12 days. I really need to finish it today. Heck, it’s only 2K words (less, actually) but the problem with telling a complete story in short form is that every last one of those words has to count. 🤔

Oklahoma is slowly starting to open up. We met Only, Baseball Boy, and Stormy for a sit-down-in-a-restaurant dinner Saturday night. It was wonderful to sit and visit with them. We were good. We all wore masks in, used hand sanitizers, and washed our hands when we got home. Our curve seems to have flattened and I’m more than ready to get things back to as normal as they can be. My life is pretty boring anyway but with the lock-down? It’s beyond boring!

And on that note, that’s all the updates I have. What’s going on in your world?

Friday Sinema: Bruh!

I’m amazed at how creative people get. Evidently, this stuntman (and women, dog, and child!) challenge is a thing. All I know is that it was totally fun to watch and I’m not surprised it’s gone viral. Do you suppose this is what will happen when regular people get a littly punchy? … *ducks and runs, calling back over shoulder* Have a great weekend, everyone!

Thursday Thoughts: Universal Feelings

As a romance author, one of the most important things I must imbue in my characters is their emotions. All the joy, hate, sadness, love, despair, jealousy, surprise, anticipation, trust and distrust, fear, amusement, bravery, disgust… The list of emotions and the feeling they evoke is pretty much endless. Creating characters turns into a virtual smorgasbord. But unless the author figures out a way to show those emotions, drawing in the reader while doing so, that list doesn’t mean a whole lot. Give me the “angry young man” who spends the book fighting himself and everyone else without ever mentioning the word “angry.” SHOW me his inner turmoil in his outward actions. Show me the tenacious heroine who hangs on by her fingernails and scrabbles for everything she wants without telling me she is stubborn or strong. Words are easy. Emotions and feelings are not.

Those feelings you most want, Silver, aren’t going to come from somewhere new, someone special, or something wonderful.

They’re going to come from within, where they now wait for your permission to be released – often in terms of somewhere new, someone special, or something wonderful.

Permission granted,
The Universe

Silver, whatever you hope to feel in the future, you can decide to feel right now.

My readers should expect the same from me and my characters. A writer has to dig deep–into both the chaqracter and into their own pysche because if the author doesn’t feel the emotion, how will they ever convey it in words so that their readers feel it? Whenever I “finish” a WIP and deem it complete, I plan to reread it with an eye to the Universe’s message. I’m going to give myself permission to release the feelings inside my characters and make sure they are display for all to see. Easy question today. What’s the last book that made you laugh out loud? I started to say “made you cry” but things are gloomy enough. I’m looking on the happy side. For me, it was Molly Harper’s ALWAYS BE MY BANSHEE (Mystic Bayou #4).

Wednesday Words: Power Hungry

Another Wednesday, another word theme. It’s springtime so there should be lots of flower power going on. I hope doesn’t take a lot of will power to read today’s snippet. Yup, today’s #1lineWed power word is…POWER! Do y’all remember Lucky from REMEMBER THE NIGHT? He’s the president of the Oklahoma Chapter of the Nightriders. He has a member named Cowboy and Cowboy got sucked into a power struggle and came out the worse for the wear. Now it’s up to Lucky to reach deep for his own magical power and do what an Alpha Wolf does…
****
Lucky
I slouched against the door jamb, watching. “How’s he doin’, Dancer?”

“Hangin’ in, Lucky. Fuckers ripped him up bad.”

Hooking my thumbs in my front pockets pulled my jeans low on my hips. It was that or give in to my wolf, claws out. “He knew the risk when he accepted the full patch. We all do. Where’s his girl?”

“The old ladies have her.”

That was Dancer’s way of saying he wanted nothing to do with that situation. The man in the bed groaned. I stepped into the room and closed the door so no one else could hear.

“Be easy, Cowboy.” Dancer touched the injured Nightrider’s shoulder.

“Emily?” Cowboy’s voice was a tortured whisper but he fought to sit up.

“Lay still, man, else you’ll tear the fuckin’ stitches.” Dancer forced the other Wolf back onto the pillows.

I was beside the bed a step later to help hold him down. “She’s fine, Cowboy. Gemma’s takin’ care of her.”

Cowboy breathed easier. “The fuckers didn’t get her.”

“No, they didn’t get her. You did your job.”

I winced as Cowboy’s deep, racking cough brought up blood. I grabbed a towel, wiped his mouth.

Dancer fixed me with a hard stare. “You know what you have to do.”

“I wish the Russian was here.”

“Cowboy’ll be dead before he could cross the state line. You’re Alpha for a reason, Luc. He’ll heal faster in wolf form. Ya’ll have to rip out his beast.”

“I can’t.”

My second in command glanced up, eyes glinting feral red in the low light. “He’s in bad shape.” Teeth bared, he growled, “This feckin’ world will lay your bones bare. And shred your soul in the process. Ya gotta do somethin’!”

Dancer wasn’t talking about life in the club, and I knew it. No, he was talking life as a Wolf.

“Damn ya, Luc. Ya fought t’be feckin’ President, t’be the top Wolf. Ya have the power. Ya can’t walk away from this now. ’Tis yer duty.”

When Dancer’s Irish accent came out thick and heavy I knew I was in fuckin’ trouble. My skin itched, my wolf wanting out in the worst way. Was I strong enough? Ripping out a man’s beast was dangerous. I could kill Cowboy as easy as heal him. But Dance was right. I had no choice.

Reaching deep, I pulled on my Alpha power, directed it toward Cowboy. He writhed, but I couldn’t think about making his injuries worse. I found his wolf and yanked. His transformation started. Sweat rolled down my spine. I fought our animals even as someone screamed. Couldn’t think about who or why. Had to hold Cowboy. Had to control the beast—his and mine.

Spots formed before my eyes. My vision blacked out. Dancer had me, held me up. My claws shredded the mattress. A woman sobbed. Emily. I recognized her scent. Then arms circled my waist, a cheek pressed against my back. The aroma of orange and ginger. Gemma.

“It’s done, love. Come back to me. Come home, Luc.”

My vision cleared. Cowboy, in wolf form, was curled up on the bed, asleep. Healing. I let go. My wolf receded. I came home to Gemma.
****
This is a scene from one of those books where the hero walked up and thunked me on the head. Often, when this happens, they give me a scene or three and expect me to write the whole dang book. 🙄 But I collect the scenes and tuck them back and eventually, a book will emerge. Until it does, I hope y’all enjoy this brief peek back at Lucky. Authors, any power worsd you want to share? Readers, what super power would you want?

Tuesday Treats: Easy Fruit Cobbler with Cinnamon

Who loves fruit cobblers? 🙋‍♀️ Today’s treat is ready in about an hour because it takes no time to prepare and bakes in a jiffy. And you can use all different kinds of fruit.

Total Time: 55 Min,
Prep Time: 15 Min.
Cook Time: 40 Min.

Healthy Living! Taste the secret to our yummy, easy fruit cobbler: vanilla pudding. The fruit in this Easy Fruit Cobbler with Cinnamon is thickened with vanilla pudding.

What You Need
1 pkg. (16 oz.) frozen sliced peaches
1 cup frozen raspberries
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 cup sugar, divided
1 pkg. (3.4 oz.) JELL-O Vanilla Flavor Instant Pudding
1/4 cup water
1/2 cup milk
1-1/2 cups all-purpose baking mix (We call it Bisquik down here in the South…just sayin’.)
1 cup thawed COOL WHIP Whipped Topping

Let’s Make It
1 – Heat oven to 350ºF.
2 – Combine fruit in large microwaveable bowl. Microwave on HIGH 1 min. Meanwhile, mix cinnamon and 1 tsp. sugar until blended; reserve for later use.
3 – Mix dry pudding mix with remaining sugar until blended. Add to fruit mixture along with the water; mix lightly. Spoon into 8-inch square baking dish sprayed with cooking spray.
4 – Add milk to baking mix in medium bowl; stir just until moistened. Drop in mounds over fruit mixture; sprinkle with reserved cinnamon mixture.
5 – Bake 35 to 40 min. or until fruit mixture is hot and bubbly and biscuit topping is lightly browned. Serve warm topped with COOL WHIP.

Kitchen Tips
Tip 1 – Substitute: Here’s a great way to use your leftover frozen cranberries from the holidays. Just substitute them for the frozen raspberries in this luscious dessert.

Tip 2 – Nutrition Bonus: The peaches are an excellent source of vitamin C and provide vitamin A in this easy-to-make old-fashioned dessert. Plus at 180 calories per serving, you can still have dessert and eat well.

My Tips: You can use apples and/or blueberries and since it says 9 servings, I’d drop to dough in a tic-tac-toe pattern in the square pan. Also, whip cream andor ice cream on top when served warm.

CLICK ON OVER to My Food and Family for all the nutritional details. This a kid-friendly favorite among the Wolves. Y’all know what that means–the kids of ALL ages like to nom on this. Annie Donaldson whips up a pan for Sean and Cody and just hands them the carton of ice cream and two spoons. They don’t care what fruits she pairs together. She’ll make another pan for herself and baby Sally, which is usually the original–peaches and raspberries. She always keeps frozen sliced fruit on hand. Annie had this to say, “It’s so easy, even if my momma would be all up in arms because I’m not makin’ a proper pie crust from scratch, and I dang sure ain’t peelin’, boilin’, and otherwise preparin’ the fruit. Y’all might think life has settle down just ‘cuz we’re livin’ in a small town but let me tell you, that just ain’t so. I’m puttin’ all the ingredients together so I’m makin’ it from scratch.  Besides, my boys like this cobbler just like this recipe tells me to make it and that’s all that matters t’me.” If I’m not mistaken, Sean and Cody are lurking just out of sight ready to request this treat once I leave Annie be. If y’all want to read their story, it starts when they meet in WOLF MOON and continues through other books to be mostly settled in MOON SHOT. WOLF MOON is part of MOONSTRUCK: LIES, wherein you get both ROGUE MOON and WOLF MOON, plus added extra chapters and stuffs like that there. You can click on a title or the cover and magically zoom off to buy any of the books. 😉

What about y’all? Do you like cobbler? What’s your favorite fruit? And the most important question of all, ice cream or whipped cream?!?! 😀

Monday? Are You Sure?

I know this because we had Chinese for dinner last night. Yes, our favorite Chinese restaurant reopened and we are glad! Decision making is so much easier with the routine–and it helps me keep track of the days of the week. Tuesday is $10 Tuesday at Papa Murphy’s Pizza. Saturday is either chicken or catfish at Golden Chick. Sunday is Chinese from Grand China. I only have to decide what to fix for dinner on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. 🍕🍗🥡

Am I boring you yet? Moving on…

TV land is alive and well. Sort of. Live PD is still in a shortened version and only in 6 locations but the newest one? I’m totally going to create a Cajun Wolf character based on one of the West Baton Rougue PD detectives. He’s like a real-life Cajun version of Sonny Crockett. Seriously. I ❤ him and his shirts. In other news, Bret Michaels was unmasked on The Masked Singer this week. Guest judge Sharon Osborne nailed him, but I sorta had it figured out, I just wasn't positive. Close enough to chalk a win up in my book. 😁

The wonderful writeres in the Tarpley VFD series that came out in February had a Zoom meeting last week to outline the details of our next release. On February 16th, new characters and books will be coming from TVFD. My book will be the last one in the series this time. I can tease you with the starring couple–Jack Riggs and Justice McAlester, both introduced in FIGHTING FOR ELENA. I'm looking forward to the fun of writing them! I'm also making progress on the short short for the anthology open call I've mentioned. Jodie and Wizard are coming together, the plot has its villain, and I hope to get it ready by the May 15th deadline. 🤞 At least I'm feeling hopeful about writing again.

Reading–or in my case, listening–was slow last week. I only managed two books, though both were new releases. First up, A BAD DAY FOR SUNSHINE by Darynda Jones. I'm at a loss as to labeling this book. It's not paranormal or urban fantasy–which is what Jones is known for–though it has a touch of magic realism. The romance was only hinted at. There's a bit of a mystery and some police procedural. And the characters are all a bit wacky, with a snarky heroine. We'll see what the next book brings, whenever it comes out. The other book was the 3rd in Shelley Laurenston's Honey Badger series, BADGER TO THE BONE. She makes me laugh out loud often and I ❤ her bears and badgers but this one? Well, I left a review on Goodreads. Not my favorite. I'm back into my In Death/Eve Dallas relisten while waiting for my next library hold to drop. I'm currently just over halfway through WITNESS IN DEATH. Have I mentioned how much I love and appreciate my local library system and the fact that they have a decent digital collection, plus Hoopla access for free? If y'all haven't looked into your libraries lately, you should. Get a library card and use it. 📚

So…food, work, TV, and reading. That pretty much sums up my life. I currently have a very large black dog snoring under my desk so probably not much computer stuff will get done. It's a pretty day. Maybe I'll get out there and dig up some of the bermuda grass in the island in front of the house. Or cut down the golden oak volunteer trees that are springing up in the island of our circle drive. Get some Vitamin D. I can be neighbor-nosey without being obvious!

What about y’all? Anything good, bad, unusual, or boring happen to you last week, or over the weekend? What’s the upcoming week look like? Inquiring (and nosey!) minds want to know!
