Mid-January Monday

It is Monday, though here in the States it’s also a federal holiday celebrating the life of the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. As a writer, most holidays don’t mean much. Writers just keep writing. The same goes for first responders, the military, and those who work retail/food services. Hats off to y’all! It’s also mid-month. There have been two Mondays, and after today, there will be two more Mondays. Weird how that happens. 🙂

There was a weekend. Part of it was cold, part of it was sort of cold. I spent most of the time indoors, either writing, listening to audio books or watching “Live PD.” And reruns of Lonestar Law and Northwoods Law. Don’t judge me. 😉

I’m doing a minimum of two Kindle World books this year. The first one releases in early April, working title MONTANA MOON and it takes place in Elle James’s Brotherhood Protectors world, and is my first venture into that world. Then I’m writing another installment in Susan Stoker’s Special Forces: Operation Alpha world with a mid-July release. The working title for that one is UNDER THE ASSASSIN’S MOON, which is, in part, a follow-up to ASSASSIN’S MOON. A lot of readers wanted to know more about Siri, the orphan girl. She’ll play a role in the new story. UTAM will be my 4th venture into Susan’s world. So many worlds, including my own, and so little time. LOL Still, ALL the characters are jabbering at me, so that’s a good thing. Sure beats the alternative.

I’ve been on a dragon kick this weekend. I have an idea why. I’m using my Audible Romance subscription and Hoopla, an app that my local library is using in addition to Overdrive. I finished up the last book in Michelle Sagawa’s Chronicles of Elantra fantasy series, which completed my reread in preparation for the new release next week. There are dragons in Elantra so that may have been why I kept checking out dragon books. I listened to the first book in the Stonefire Dragons series by Jessie Donovan. It was okay but I didn’t feel pushed to read the next book in the series. Then I grabbed Ruby Dixon’s Fireblood Dragons series. She’s better known for her Ice Planet Barbarians SciFi romance series. This series is more…dystopian? Or maybe apocalyptic. There was a tear between realms, dragons fell to earth and started burning stuff up. So far, it’s okay. I like the narrators. Since Ariel’s book is next up in the Penumbra Papers, I need to start reading some books about the fae to get in the mood. 😆

Life is pretty boring at the moment. Writing and listening to books, with the occasional dash of TV. We’re about a month away from Pitchers/Catchers with MLB. I’m ready. I don’t want the NFL and have little interest in the Super Bowl, beyond commercials and with the internet, so many of the ads are released early so…

What about y’all? How’s your weather? What are you reading? Any TV shows or movies that have caught your attention?

Thursday Thoughts: Universal Lost and Found

Regular readers have heard me explain my writing process before. I’m a puzzler. I often use prompts, get wild hairs, get hit by a lightning bolt of inspiration, and other craziness. I haven’t written a book in linear fashion, ie. from start to finish, in a long while. This is why I love Scrivener. I write in bits and pieces, unrelated scenes, and sometimes the end before the beginning. There was one book where I wrote the middle then worked both backwards and forward to tell the story. Crazypants. I know. That’s why this little ditty from the Universe made sense to me. At least in relation to my writing. Probably in my life as well.

When I start a book, I’m always lost. I have characters I know nothing about. I have a beginning or an end and no idea how to find my way from here to there. I have a small idea I must turn into many thousands of words. Since I write romance, I have to make two people fall in love, which is always fun if they happen to hate each other to begin with. I love adventures and my characters are far more demonstrative with the expletives than might be normal. What can I say? Anyway, here’s what the big U had to say this week:

I know you already know this, but Silver, the only way one can find their way is to first be lost. To make it big, start out small. To fall in love, first feel none. Yet, when these adventures begin and the dreamers suddenly find themselves lost, small, and alone, you should hear the “expletives”!

So, look at it like this: Any such feelings are simply a sign that you’ve made a really, really big and daring “wish,” and its manifestation has already begun.

Pssst… Silver, are you starting to feel the love?

Have I mentioned that I love my books? That’s why I write them. I love my characters and their stories. I’d like to be brave enough (or is it strong enough?) to say that I don’t care if anyone reads them or not. That’s not quite true. I do care. I want people to love them too. And if they do, I hope they share that love by telling their friends and family and strangers. Because whenever I’m feeling lost, small, and alone and I discover a good review or I get an email from someone telling me they enjoyed reading my books, I do feel the love. And I smile. A lot. And I want to write more books. It’s a “vicious” circle. Do me a favor, go get lost in a book today! Pssst. It doesn’t even have to be one of mine. 😉

Wednesday Words: Get Off of My Lawn

Since last week’s #1lineWed theme was *OLD*, I figured this week’s theme should be **YOUNG**. You know, for reasons! 😉 Anyway, it also gave me an idea of how to start the new WIP. At the moment, the working title is MONTANA MOON. This is a first draft so please ignore anything but content. And if it’s boring, PLEASE tell me!

Chapter 1

The phone rang and rang and rang. Tate thrust an arm dripping with soap and hot water out of the shower to grab the damn thing. He checked the caller ID before turning it off. The debrief could wait until morning. He dropped the phone back onto the counter and retreated under the scalding water pouring from the shower head. He’d been back from the retrieval Hank Patterson, his occasional employer at Brotherhood Protectors, sent him on all of 30 minutes. Two spoiled rich kids decided to hit the road in Mommy’s Mercedes. He caught the brats on the other side of the Mexican border, minus the Mercedes and in the hands of a cartel far more interested in human trafficking than was good for the two girls. Despite saving their lives and other things, they’d bitched at him all the way back to a multi-million dollar log mansion in Aspen, where the father of the car thief handed over a check with lots of zeros.

What the hell was wrong with young people today? Tate snorted and pictured himself in a rocking chair on his front porch and shaking a cane at those young whippersnappers. Laughing now, he leaned his hands on the granite tile lining his walk-in shower, head bent so the steaming liquid sluiced across his neck and shoulders. He was beat, going on close to 72 hours with no sleep. Back in the day when he’d been running special ops with the SEAL teams, that had been a walk in the park. Even his wolf half was tired. The critter wanted a rare steak, the man a six-pack of beer, and both about 24 hours of curling up in front of the fire and snoozing. Sounded damn fine idea.

Tate “Shooter” McCord was a Wolf. He carried the lupi versi pellis gene on his Y chromosome and that weird little DNA anomaly gave him the ability to shift from man to wolf and back again. He never got sick, healed faster than normal when injured—and considering he’d been a SEAL for almost 20 years, he’d needed that special kick more than once. Tonight, though, he was feeling his age—emotionally if not truly physically. He’d come back to the Crazy Mountains in Montana to lick his wounds after that last mission in Bumfuck, Afghanistan. The operation had been a Charlie Foxtrot from the git-go. They’d only lost one man but the entire unit had been shot up, with half of the team sustaining career-ending injuries. He’d joined them, especially after receiving the Navy Cross, the Silver Star, and the Purple Heart. All three medals made him feel like a fraud. Getting his teammates out wasn’t heroic. It was part of the job. So he’d retired and returned to a place that had been home once upon a time.

The water turned tepid and he turned off the faucet. After drying off, he pulled on a pair of jean shorts and wandered into the kitchen. The steak he picked up on the way home kissed the frying pan on both sides and then he was settled in front of the fire in his living room with the big screen TV showing some spring training baseball game. Ten minutes later, with his stomach full and headache finally receding, he closed his eyes and dropped into combat sleep.

If your WIP is feeling a little young at heart, or has some young love, or youngsters, drop some words into the comments. 😉

Tuesday Treats: Asian Chicken ‘N Noodles

Sometimes, I don’t have time. Sometimes, not only do I not have time, I don’t have the energy, wherewithal, or motivation to either go out, go grab fast food, or put together a “real” meal. And frozen dinners are not my favorite. I am a fan of noodles though. I also like chicken, onions, and a modicum of veggies. When I tumbled across this recipe, I snagged it because…reasons! Like it’s easy peasy. It’s fast. It’s yummy. And I usually have all the ingredients on hand.

Prep Time: 15 min.
Total Time: 15 min.
Servings: 2 servings

Ramen noodle soup mix adds instant Asian-style appeal to this 15-minute chicken and noodles dish.

What You Need
1-1/2 cups water
1 pkg. (3 oz.) chicken flavor ramen noodle soup mix, divided
1 carrot, thinly sliced
1 pkg. (6 oz.) OSCAR MAYER CARVING BOARD Flame Grilled Chicken Breast Strips
1 green onion, sliced

Make It
Bring water to boil in medium saucepan. Add Noodles and carrots; stir. Cook 3 min.

Add chicken and 1 tsp. Seasoning (from ramen soup package); mix well. Cook 5 min. or until heated through, stirring occasionally. Discard remaining seasoning.

Sprinkle with onions.

You can CLICK HERE to get nutritional information about the recipe.

I would probably double the ramen noodles, might add a handful of frozen peas to go with the carrots–and FYI, I use shredded carrots that I buy packaged, and I might just add a little teriyaki marinade. This is a great meal for one or two when you’re in a hurry and want something relatively homemade. 😉 This is very much in Hannah’s wheelhouse, though she informs me that she IS, with help from Jacey, Annie, and Izzy, learning to to actually cook real food. I know Hannah is a favorite character for many of you. Me, too! If you haven’t read the beginning of her story, you can get a head start with MOONSTRUCK: SECRETS.

Second Monday

So…I sort of ignored the New Year last week. In fact, I pretty ignored the world from between Christmas and a day or two after New Year’s because…sick! This is like the 3rd year a row that I’ve been sick over the holidays and let me tell you, it SUCKS! Big time. Anyway, I was in bed sleeping off flu/cold/cough medications long before midnight. Besides, it was cold outside! It’s been cold outside a lot lately. Which makes sense since it is winter.

Since I’ve been sick, there isn’t a whole lot going on in my world. I am teaching a class for RWA’s Kiss of Death Mystery and Suspense chapter this month. We’re discussing psychics, ghosts, magic, and all those things that go bump in the night and how to apply them to a suspense or mystery work in progress.

Not doing much reading but I am going through audio books like crazy. Luckily, not only does my local library subscribe to Overdrive, they’ve also now subscribed to Hoopla and I can download six items a month from that site. The series I’m currently doing a re-listen to because the newest book comes out this month is Michelle Sagara’s Chronicles of Elantra, a fantasy series. I own some of early volumes of the audio books, Overdrive had the middle ones that I could check out and download, but didn’t have the last set of books. Hoopla does so yay! I want to own the series eventually but…budget! I’m also looking forward to the next IN DEATH book, also coming out this month.

Writing is coming in little pieces at the moment. I have a Brotherhood Protectors Kindle World book to finish up and get ready for release in early April. The fabulous Elle James invited me to play in her world. Tate “Shooter” McCord, former Navy SEAL, current lone Wolf shifter, and part-time contract employee of the Brotherhood Protectors company has an old favor called in by Ian “Mac” McIntire, of the Moonstruck Wolves. Lauren Reilly is running for her life and can’t trust anyone. Until a sexy former SEAL tracks her down, kidnaps her, and takes a bullet for her. Fun times! I know who the characters are now so their story should start to unfold quickly now.

Sports are…how many days until pitchers and catchers report? ‘Nuff said. 😆

That’s pretty much it in my life at the moment. I am slowly regaining energy and can actually go longer than 24 hours without meds, so long as I don’t push my energy levels. How are y’all doin’? Did you have good holidays? Get something special for Christmas? Have a reading list for 2018 yet? Check in and say hi!

Thursday Thoughts: Universal New Year

This bit of New Year wisdom popped into my inbox and I wanted to share it on this first Thursday Thoughts of 2018. As we’re now four days into the new year, I thought the rest of you might appreciate the message as well.

Silver, soon the new year starts, so now’s a great time to:

1. Wipe the slate clean.
2. Focus upon what you really want.
3. Chart your course.

Or is that a bit old school? Feels tiring? Ugh!

How about an adventurous alternative:

1. Give thanks that your life is exactly as it is.
2. Decide that 2018 will be the happiest year of your life yet.
3. Every day, follow your heart and instincts down new paths.

This will be your year, Silver –
The Universe

You really are READY, Silver. And your publishing empire is ready for you.

****
I’d love that bit about the publishing empire to work out as that implies the funds necessary to run said empire. Interestingly, the advice the Universe offers is pretty much the conclusion I’d come to on my own. I’m going to choose to be an optimist this year, a “glass half full” kinda gal. What about you? Will you be old school or adventurous?

Wednesday Words: Old = New #1lineWed

A new year, a new series of #1lineWed themes. Today’s theme: **OLD** should be an easy one for most writers. There’s old news, old friends, old clothes, old age, old…take your pick. In my case, the first bit that popped up when I did a search of my Works in Progress, is the prologue for Gravedigger’s story. I know some of you are waiting for him. Maybe I’ll hit a writing streak this year and he’ll get his book done as well. This bit is in the POV of Shiane “Shy” Rourke. There’s graphic language, just FYI.

Prologue

Fifteen years ago…
I wrapped my arms around my big sister. I was beyond screaming, beyond tears. The storm raged around the house, lightning flashes and thunder that weren’t from Mother Nature. Shadows stomped through the room as I crouched over Becca. I wanted her to hold me, to tell me it would be okay but her arms were limp.

Men cursed saying really bad words, words that Becca told her boyfriend not to say around me. Why wasn’t she moving? Why wasn’t she doing something to make them go away?

“Fuckin’ shit.”

I stopped breathing as a huge shadow loomed over me.

“Brick!” the shadow yelled.

An even bigger shadow appeared. “What the fuck?”

“That’s not a nice word,” I whispered. Or thought I did. My teeth were chattering I was so scared.

“The bitch is dead,” the first shadow said.

What? He shouldn’t call Becca a bitch. That was a bad word too. Then the other word he’d said hit me. Dead? No. She couldn’t be dead. She was my big sister. She took care of me.

“Fuck it all to hell,” the second shadow growled.

I cringed back as hands reached for me. I clutched Becca’s sweater, clung to it as those hands plucked me up.

“Let to, baby girl,” the first shadow said, his voice so low it rumbled in my ear like a diesel truck.

“No!” Never. I would never let go of my sister. Something silvery glinted in a flash of light and then I was jerked away, my fists still grasping parts of Becca’s sweater.

“Bury this, Gravedigger,” the second shadow snarled.
****
Now
A cop had found me sitting on a bench at the bus stop half a block from the police station. I was covered in blood—none of it mine. All I had left of my sister was two handfuls of unraveling yarn. They never found her body. Never found her boyfriend’s or any of the guys in his motorcycle gang.

Mitch Collins, the cop who sat with me at the ER, who walked me through the system, was a good guy. He and his wife took me in though they didn’t adopt me. That was fine. I didn’t want any of my baggage to taint them. You see, sitting there on that bench? I started to plan. I might have been only ten, but my sister was my whole world. Our old man had been a biker and our mother a biker’s old lady. They drank, smoked pot, did meth. Mom OD’d when I was five and Becca was fifteen. She took care of me because losin’ Mom? That just made the old man drink, smoke pot, do meth and fuck every pussy he could stick his dick into.

Becca got us away from that. She was going to community college, going to become a dental tech because there was good money to be made. Then she met Bozo. His name should have told her something. He was a biker. And Becca? She fell hard. And it got her dead.

Still, Mitch and Kathy were nice people. They saw me through high school and I think they were relieved when I joined the Army after graduation. See, I went into the military to get trained. I had an agenda, one I’d kept close to my chest since Mitch found me sitting on that damn bench, covered in blood, teeth chattering from shock, and scared out of my ever-loving mind.

That was then. This was now. I remembered two things from that night—two things that haunted every last one of my nights: a wolf’s head, fanged mouth open ready to eat me alive, and a name.

Gravedigger.
****
I have a few chapters written, inspiration that comes in fits and starts. The same happens with Wizard’s and Gunner’s books. We’ll see which gets finished first. So, in this first week of the new year, do any of you have old words to share? Any thoughts on Digger’s dilemma? *bwahaha*

New Year Stuffs

So…I have one resolution for 2018–either do all my Christmas shopping by Labor Day or do it on line. This is the third year in a row I’ve been sick over the holidays and I’m sick and tired! I managed the familial rounds on Christmas Day and then I went to bed and pretty much stayed there until today, and it was noon before I was actually out of bed and moving. This is not the way to start a fresh new year that should be full of promise, new dreams and aspirations, and…stuffs.

So, that’s the state of me physically. I know part of it is I stay away from people as a rule. I do the shopping but I don’t get close to other shoppers, I don’t interact with clerks–yay for self-checkout–and I fear I’m becoming such a recluse that if I weren’t so persnickety about picking out my own groceries, I’d surrender to the temptation to order my groceries on-line from Walmart and go pick them up. Actually, I wouldn’t even have to do that. They bring your groceries out to your car! Sadly, that would mean I got almost no exercise, which we won’t discuss.

So, I have plans for 2018. I have books to write. I’m not promising everything I WANT to write gets written but if things fall into place, here’s what’s contracted for followed by what I want to add:

Contracted:
Kindle World: March – Elle James’s Brotherhood Protectors
Harlequin Desire: Finals on Tucker’s book, write Cooper’s book and Bridger’s book, get contract for Boone, Dillon, and Hunter for 2019.

Planned:
Nightriders: Wizard’s book and Gunner’s book (which is a Christmas story)
Hard Target: Book #2 (not sure yet who’s story it will be. I’m hoping Kin’s)
The Penumbra Papers: Book #5 – Ariel, Book 4.5 – a Sade/Sinjen novella
Moonstruck Mob: If and when. I still want to do the three serials – Irish, Russian, and Italian. All it takes is time and inspiration.

Hope all of you had a wonderful holiday season and a safe New Year celebration. May 2018 bring you all things warm and wonderful, fulfilled dreams, and many, many books read and/or written!
