Monday and Editing Cat

dont-look-editingRed Dirt Royalty #7 hit THE END yesterday. Now to spend today and tomorrow working on continuity, typos, language, flow, and story. Easy peasy. 🙄 Needless to say, when a writer is under a contracted deadline, we get a little squirrely. Okay. We get a lot squirrely. Okay. I get a lot squirrely.

So, what’s going on in the rest of reality? Yeah…I don’t want to go there either. Oh! It’s only 16 days until Pitchers and Catchers report to Spring Training. Baseball is good. *nods* And that pretty much sums up sports at the moment. I know the Super Bowl is next week. *yawn* I usually only watch for the commercials and I was sorely disappointed last year. Luke Bryan has been tapped to sing the National Anthem and since the game is on Fox, we might actually get to see him sing it.

Reading: It’s contest reading season so most of the books on my reading list can’t be mentioned. Ah well. I have glommed onto a new-to-me author and book that is…well, it’s weird to call a fantasy about gryphon attacks delightful, but this one is. There’s some romance. There are warriors (Riders) who–wait for it–RIDE magical beasts, including one dragon rider. There’s scheming and family drama and the author’s voice is…delightful. I’m about halfway through and wishing I had more time to read. If you get the chance, glom onto HEARTSTONE, the debut historical fantasy by Elle Katharine White.

TV: Nope. Not going there. Every time I turn it on, seems I just get pissed off. When I’m not writing, I’m reading. The shows I care about are DVR’d. I’ll catch up on them soon. OH! Speaking of commercials, who has seen the newest Subaru Dog-tested ad where the Golden couple’s windshield is getting splattered with gobs of goo? The only thing that would have made it better would be if the dog in the car in front of them had been a Newf. I know. I’m so easily entertained. 😆

Oh, in case anyone is curious, RDR#7-Deacon came in at a few stray words over 49K. I’ll know the final count tomorrow. Until then, send coffee! And that’s pretty much my life. What’s going on in your neck of the woods?

Friday Free-for-All: New Linky-links

Friday!I haven’t done a list of cool links lately so I thought I’d share the good, the bad, and the funny that I’ve discovered when traipsing across the intrawebz.

Writers, don’t do THESE THINGS. Just…don’t.

Writers, you might want to look into this EVERLASTING NOTEBOOK! I have to admit it looks cool and is, to me, surprisingly affordable given what it does/is. I also have to admit that I’m considering it the next time I get some extra $$.

Best. Proposal. Ever! No. Really. I sooo want to steal this idea to use in one of my books! Click HERE.

Readers, take note. You want this awesome new extension for Chrome, if that’s your browser of choice. Book shopping? LIBRARY EXTENSION will tell you if the book is available at your local library. How cool is that? And yes, I have the extension and have used it! LOVE IT! It works on Amazon and Goodreads that I know of, because that’s the bookish sites where I check for titles.

This is a link you definitely want to click over to see. Sean E. Avery is an amazing artist located in Perth. His sculptures, made from old CDs, are crazypants awesomesauce! Click HERE to go see his arty bits!

Have a great weekend! I’ll be deep in edits on Deacon’s book so I can send it off to New York by Tuesday.

Wednesday Words: Books and Pages

wurkn-on-mai-plan-for-word-domination-caleb-pupSince yesterday was National Readers Day, today’s #1lineWed theme is most apropos! 😀 When I retweeted the theme, I asked the question: As writers, how many of us actually mention books or pages in a book in our work? My heroines often read. And surprisingly to some, the Barron boys were known to read–at least as children. I wasn’t surprised to discover that Deke has a “library” in his Oklahoma ranch home too.

In this unedited scene, Deke went to get baby Noelle from her crib. He’s currently sitting in the living area feeding the baby her bottle. This is Quin’s POV and observations. Enjoy! 🙂
***
Swiveling on her stool, Quin watched him. She had to admit the guy truly was competent. He changed diapers. He made bottles. Looking into the laundry room behind the kitchen and the overflowing basket, it looked like he knew how to run a washer and dryer even if he didn’t fold clothes.

“Ha. He’ll make a woman a great wife one of these days,” she muttered. Not that she cared. She wasn’t in the market for a wife. Or a husband. And especially not a boyfriend. Her biological clock could just keep tick-tick-ticking along. Home and hearth weren’t high on her priority list. But… She glanced around.

Every time she came out here, she got the same feeling. This wasn’t just another house to Deke. This was his home. He might have a residence in Nashville—she made a mental note to check on that—or other places, but this log cabin was home. She caught the chuckle bubbling up before it escaped. Calling this house a log cabin was like calling the Barron Hotel a boarding house. Even so, the place felt…lived in. Comfortable. A place where you could take your shoes off and plop your feet on the coffee table to watch TV.

Soaring ceilings, huge windows that opened to the vistas surrounding the house. The massive native stone fireplace flanked by bookcases. Filled with books. Curious, she slipped off her stool and tiptoed over to check some of the titles. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason to his “filing” system. “Gulliver’s Travels” was shelved next to one of the Harry Potter books. She found titles by Shakespeare, Dumas, and several Scarlet Pimpernel titles by Countess Orczy. There were biographies of political figures and military history books. She took down a biography of Harry Truman. It was obvious from the wear and tear on the pages that the book had been read. She reshelved it, checked the Potter book. It, too, looked well-read.

She found beloved children’s books. Classic detective noir books and modern thrillers. Fantasy. Science fiction. Quin wondered if he had a romance or two stashed somewhere, remnants from a former girlfriend. She shook off the thought. That way lay trouble.

Quin did not want to like Deacon. She didn’t want this case to get personal in any way, shape, or form. But it was. Despite her best efforts. There was just something about the guy that sucked people in. Whether it was his good ol’ boy demeanor, those amazing blue eyes and his handsome face—not to mention that honed body… She shook those thoughts out of her head. Treading dangerous ground there, she reminded herself.

“You’re thinking awfully hard over there.” The whiskey-rough sound of his voice startled Quin out of her ruminations. Was there anything not sexy about the man?

“Actually, I wasn’t thinking anything except I’ve made my duty call and I should get on with my day.”
“Suit yourself. I was going to offer breakfast…” Was he wheedling?

“Sorry. Already ate.” Quin slipped off the stool, settled her belt, and strode toward the chair. Where Deke was sitting. Leaning against her coat. She growled at herself. She knew by now he always occupied that particular chair. Why would she drop her jacket there? Idiot. “I’ll just grab my coat.” She indicated where his back was pressed with a tilt of her head.

“Ah. Sorry.” Deke leaned forward but only far enough she could grab the collar and tug. He was such a jerk.

Yes. A jerk. Not a nice man. Not an aw’shucks country boy with blue eyes and a dimple. She needed to remember that if she was to get through this whole situation with her sanity intact. “Sorry I woke you. I’ll try to schedule my visit a little later in the day, seeing as you aren’t a morning person.” Quin headed for the door. “I’ll let myself out.”

“Y’all come back now, hear?”

Was he mocking her? While she normally had a good ear for sarcasm, Quin couldn’t tell. Yes, his drawl sometimes became more pronounced, but he did that to flirt, or win over an unsuspecting adversary. She was onto that particular trick.

Don’t look back. Don’t look back. She couldn’t help herself. She looked back. Deke had the baby up on his shoulder, patting her back. That so was not an image she wanted on the drive back to Oklahoma City. Then the insufferable man looked up at her and winked.

Hope you enjoyed the snippet. Writers? Do you put books, pages, and/or reading in your books? Readers, do you like to “see” what a character likes to read?

Monday Morning Fix

repeatSo…there was a weekend. People were busy doing things. Lots of things. Me? I mostly kept my head down and my mouth shut and wrote lots of words. I did some stuff but I’ll discuss it below in the appropriate section. 😆

Writing: Sometimes, books seem to write themselves. The words pour out and I’ll suddenly come to a period or a question mark–even an exclamation point on the rare occasion. I stop. I realize my feet are cold and swollen. My neck is stiff and my hands are cramping. An hour or more will have passed and even if I can barely stand up out of my chair, I’m exhilarated. Other times, I sit and stare at the last line I wrote knowing it sucks but not sure how to fix it, nor how to move forward. Lately, with this book, it’s been far more of the latter. I was way behind on my word count and while I had a few future scenes either sketched out or completed, I was well and truly stuck. So, Saturday, I did all the things that normally work to get me unstuck. That’s how I figured out I had the time line all wrong. So I sat down to plot the time line. FYI? I NEVER do that. I’ve done timelines for birth dates and such but never a day-to-day “calendar” of events. Trust me, this book needed it. So I was standing in the kitchen waiting for my vanilla soy milk to heat in the microwave in preparation for my next of way-too-many cups of coffee trying to explain this to Lawyer Guy. Even with the new time line the end of the book was eluding me. I was just over halfway in my word count and normally I have at least an inkling of the end. Then it hit me. The whole knotted-up mess of a plot unraveled just as pretty as you please and dang if I didn’t sit down and rip out almost 3K words. So, I’m back on track and hit just over 35K words. So yay!

TV: Yeah…still not doing a whole lot of TV. In trying to avoid the news, I tumbled across the WGN series, OUTSIDERS. I’d watched the first couple of shows and drifted away. Then I watched a show from somewhere in the middle of the season as the channel ran a marathon on Saturday in preparation for the new season this week. I got sort of intrigued so I DVR’d the shows. I’ll give them a look see at some point, see if it holds my attention this time. I’m two LUCIFER episodes behind. I need to get my word count done early so I can catch up before tonight’s episode. Other than that, I’m watching FIRST 48, NIGHTWATCH and LIVE PD. 🙄

Movies: I caught some trailers over the weekend and I know there are some I want to see but sadly, the only one I remember is one I have no intention of ever watching. CHiPS might have been cheesy back in the day but I LOVED that show! Jon and Ponch and the whole crew! Well, some numbnuts has gone and made a parody movie of it. Grrrr. Oh! FANTASTIC CREATURES. I didn’t watch the last couple of Potter movies, but I want to see this one as soon as it hits cable.

Books and reading: Most of what I’m reading is secret, contest stuffs. No revealing until after the winners are announced in July. 😉 But I’ve also grabbed a couple of sale/free books to add to my stash: IN FOR A PENNY, by Nancy Naigle and Kelsey Browning, a cozy mystery starring little ol’ southern ladies of the gray-haired variety. THE THIRTEENTH MAN, by J.L. Doty, is an outer-space fantasy. I also snagged BRIDES FOR BROTHERS (Midnight Sons #1) by Debbie Macomber from the library. Since I’ve been in a slump where reading for pleasure is concerned, I thought I’d go out of my usual “comfort” zone to see if I could shake things up.

So, that’s pretty much my run-down for the weekend. What did y’all do? Got plans for the week? I’m writing. That 1/31 deadline isn’t getting any further away but at least I’m back on the right track and really liking this book now. 🙂 Time for another cup of coffee because daylight’s burnin’ and this dang book ain’t gonna write itself…

Friday Sinema: Fade to Black

So…today is a day. But this is a political-free zone so I’m going with a video that I’m all WHEW! Let me fan my face! over. Why? because… This! This song. This video. This is the way I want to write the love scenes in my books. So yeah, today’s Friday Sinema is a touch on the sinful side. FYI? That gorgeous lady in the video? That’s Dierk’s wife and mother of his 3 children. How hot is that? Have a great weekend! And I promise, the sun will rise tomorrow. Just sayin’…

Wednesday Words: Branching Out

crash-n-burn-finalkw-1kToday’s theme for #1lineWed is brought to you by the letters K-O-D, which of course stands for Kiss of Death. I’m going out on a limb because I can’t see the forest for the trees and everyone leaves before getting to the good part. No, I haven’t had enough coffee yet. Why do you ask? As you may have guessed the inspiration words are **TREES, LIMBS, LEAVES, BRANCHES**. Y’all are in luck today. With CRASH & BURN releasing tomorrow–still no buy link yet–I thought I’d share this snippet. This scene takes place the morning after Derek and Kit’s first meeting.
****
“Get them done. I’ll drive you to the command center. You can deliver them all and then I’ll take you home.”

She sighed again. “Oh…kay.” Kit caught herself leaning closer to him, her eyes closing. She jerked upright. “Wait. No. Not okay. I have to take my vehicle home. I need it in case I get a call out. I don’t need you to take me home. I’m not some helpless damsel in distress. I’m mmphff.”

He shut her up by kissing her. And he dodged when she swung her fist at his jaw. He caught up both her hands, twisted her around and gathered her back against his chest. He buried his nose in the soft spot behind her ear, inhaling deeply. He could almost hear the crunch of fallen leaves beneath his feet, feel the warmth of the sun on his face, and smell the evergreen trees on an autumn day. Gods but he loved the way she smelled.

“Get the drives done, darlin’. I’ll run you out to the site then bring you back to get your vehicle. I’ll follow you home then take you out to dinner.”

She struggled for a brief moment then stilled. “Are you sniffing me? Ewww. That’s just…gross. I know I haven’t had a shower in like 48 hours but you don’t have to—”

He spun her around to face him, like one of those fancy ballroom dance moves, and his mouth descended to cover hers again. Holy cow but the man could kiss. Kit did her best to remain focused. And mad. But how the heck was a woman supposed to stay angry at a man who curled her toes? Logic. She needed to apply cold, hard logic. Then she pictured him naked. Her brain broke.

Kit kissed him back. The aroma of baking cinnamon rolls wafted over her natural scent. She wanted him. If he’d been a dancing man, he would be doing the tango. But he was a Wolf. He was too busy planning ways to claim his mate.
***
So, those are my words for today. What about y’all? Any tree-mendous words to share?
