Wednesday Words: Don’t Let the Door Hit You

wurkn-on-mai-plan-for-word-domination-caleb-pupHump Day has once again rolled around and the #1lineWed prompt opens a lot of *DOOR*s. shifty-eyes-ani2faster

So, I finished the first, VERY rough draft of CLAIMING THE COWGIRL’S BABY, RDR#6 yesterday afternoon. Today, I’m scrambling to edit it and get it sent back to Mr. HQEd in NYC. Since I’m opening and closing doors, I thought I’d grab a snippet from it. This is in Chapter 1, and it has NOT been edited. At all. So…

***
Removing his cowboy hat, he reached for the bandanna in his hip pocket, only to discover there wasn’t one. Instead, his fingers encountered the crumpled envelope—a certified letter requesting his presence at this place and time. And he had no freaking idea why. Cyrus Barron had hired him straight out of Oklahoma State University to run the Crown B Ranch, putting him in charge rather than one of Mr. Barron’s five sons. Was that why he’d been summoned?

He’d dressed up—for him. Starched jeans with a knife-edged crease, buttoned-up shirt, polished boots. No bandanna to wipe the sweat from his forehead, no spurs jangling as he walked. Kade used an index finger to ease the pressure of his collar against his throat. Hat in hand, he entered the building.

Kade stayed pressed into a back corner as the elevator stopped on lower floors. People got on and off. A few women smiled. Several men did double takes before their expressions turned speculative. This wasn’t first time his presence engendered that reaction. He wondered what people saw in him that created this response. Was it his Chickasaw heritage? His mother had been a full-blood. He knew nothing about his father.

By the time the elevator doors opened on the 36th floor, Kade was the sole occupant. He stepped into an impressive reception area defined by dark wood and leather. Both receptionists—one male, one female—glanced up. The young man frowned, the slightly older woman smiled.

Hat still in his hands, he approached the desk. “Ah…good morning? I think I have an appoint—”

Smile still in place, the woman interrupted him. “Good morning, Mr. Waite. Heidi, Mr. Barron’s assistant, will be here momentarily.”

He eyed the plush leather couches and the tall-backed chairs in the waiting area wondering if he should sit down. The tall mahogany doors that led to the inner sanctum of Barron & Associates, the law firm headed up by Chance Barron, opened, making a decision unnecessary. A petite, dark-haired woman bustled toward him.

“Good morning, Kaden.” She extended her hand and he automatically shook it.
***
What’s in store for our intrepid cowboy? And what do y’all have in store for me? What doors have you opened or closed in your stories? Anything you want to share?

Oh, I DID “win” NaNoWriMo. RDR#6 came in at 50,016, though I hope to lose betwee 1-2K in editing. Plus, I did work on NIGHT FIRE, so that counted to. I’ll certify at some point today so I get my certificate and other goodies. 😉

rescue-moonkw-210Here’s a little snippet from the prologue to tease you…

A guard reappeared, snagged Dana and dragged her off. When she got back to the cell, she corralled the kids, gesturing for them to huddle around her while she spoke.

“I’ve talked to the school and they’re negotiating,” she whispered, glancing over her shoulder to make sure they were alone. “We just need to stay calm, not piss them off, and with any luck at all, we’ll all get out of this unscathed.”

“This trip totally sucks, Ms. Peterson. I’d better get an A for all the hassle.” Kaylie leaned against the jock, Zach, and looked every bit the spoiled cheerleader.

Hours passed and the kids’ bitching grew in volume and nastiness. Even Elias, their resident geek, complained because they’d taken his smart phone and he couldn’t play any of his games—or hack into the NSA or something. When the metal cell door slammed open, even Clayton lost his swagger as two of the cartel members appeared.

“El Jefe wants you,” the guy she’d nicknamed Toothless drawled.

The other man grabbed and held her while Toothless ran his hands over her whole body, leering the entire time. “Gotta make sure you don’t got no weapons.”

Managing to control her reactions, Dana didn’t fight as she was led away, resolved to find some way to kill these men if they touched either of the girls. They led her from the basement dungeon into sunlight. The head of the cartel lounged next to his pool. What she initially thought was a shaggy lap dog turned out to be a woman’s head, vigorously bobbing up and down. Was she—? Dana gagged on the bile surging up her throat. Who did this kind of thing? Well, duh. The top guy in a Mexican drug cartel, obviously. Dana shouldn’t have been shocked, no matter how naive she felt.

“Good news, señorita. When the ransom arrives, your students will be free to go.” Relief washed over her but with a leering grin, he continued, “Too bad there is no money for you.”

Adrenaline rippled through her, leaving her skin tingling. A moment later, she was totally numb. Nothing worked—not her muscles, not her mind. She was going to die. Or worse.

Go forth and buy the book, or come to the party on the offside chance of winning a copy or an Amazon GC. I now return you to your regularly scheduled social media.

Monday in a Turkey Coma

Monday again coffee girlActually, it’s a writing hangover but since this is the Monday after Thanksgiving, I thought I’d go with the obvious. Today’s update is short. I have a looming deadline and I’ve hit the panic flail mode. Fun times.

There’s not enough coffee in the world today.

I’ll be mostly MIA from the interwebz for the duration. Deadlines come before real life. Or cyber life.

Just flipped on the TV after a push notice on my phone. The world is crazy–now listening to on-going news reports of Ohio State University shooting.

Learn to love each other.

Friday Sinema: Christmas Boxing

John Lewis is an English store known for their holiday commercials. To celebrate the season, I’ll be sharing some of my favorites each Friday between now and Christmas. Some are funny, some are heart-warming, all of them are meant to bring a smile. Merry Christmas.

Thursday Thoughts: On Being Thankful

thanksgiving
I have much for which to be thankful.

I have a family I love and am proud of, who support me. I have friends who make me smile, who stand beside me, and quite often prop me up. I am living my dream of being a writer. I get to make up stories and people read them. I’ve had 30+ years with my best friend and husband. I have an amazing daughter, son-in-law, and grandson. I have in-laws instead of out-laws. I have friends I consider family, and that’s the best kind.

I have books to read with no one telling me I can’t read them, music to listen to, and favorite TV shows, movies, and news that isn’t censored (even though I have to filter it through reporter’s opinions more often that I used to). I’m thankful for all of those and for the time in which to indulge.

I live in a country where freedom is a right, though far too many take that right for granted. I pray I never do. Men and women have shed their blood for the flag and the country for which it stands. I am thankful for those dedicated souls who volunteer their lives to protect my freedoms, and I thank their families for the sacrifices they make as their loved ones do their duty. I am thankful for police, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel for putting themselves on the front line to keep me and mine safe and my heart breaks each time one is lost in the line of duty.

Yes, I have much to be thankful for. Oh, wait! COFFEE. I am totally thankful for coffee!!!! 😉

What are you thankful for?

Wednesday Words: Eating What Ate You

rescue-moonkwOn the day before Thanksgiving here in the US, it’s a bit fitting that the #1lineWed prompt is *EAT/ATE*. And while I’m supposed to use a line (or in my case, a whole snippet!) from a work in progress, the fun “eat” line I found came from my new release. If you haven’t grabbed your copy of RESCUE MOON yet, just click on the cover. 😉

So…a Wolf and a girl and a horse walked into the desert…

***
It was now mid-afternoon, Dana was dozing in the saddle, and he was trotting along on a parallel track. Once the horse figured out he wasn’t going to eat it, the animal settled in and they made good time. From time to time, he urged the horse into an easy canter, other times, into a gentle jogging trot. Mostly they walked at a good clip. He ranged wide, locating a place to camp for the night, and even managed to bring down a small deer. He made sure to field dress it before Dana got anywhere close. He didn’t think she’d be squeamish but why take chances?

An hour before sunset, he changed, dressed, and backtracked to pick up Dana’s trail. She was awake and upright in the saddle, but looking grumpy as they drew closer together.

“Where have you been all day?” she demanded when they were within earshot.

“Scouting.”

“You left me alone out there.”

“I checked on you. For a city girl, you ride pretty well.”

“Seriously? You think you’re going to distract me by complimenting me hoping I’ll change the subject?”

He offered a lopsided grin. “Is it working?”

What do you think Dana’s response was? EyebrowWiggleIn

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Enjoy your families, friends, and food. Eat well. Have fun.

Tuesday Treats: Festive Fall Foods and a Book

This is Thanksgiving week. I’m lucky. My favorite BiL and SiL are hosting both sides of the family at their place. I’m doing a couple of things but mostly, I just have to show up and eat wonderful food. Still, it’s fall and that makes it time for foods that are uniquely autumnal in nature. I have no actual recipes and you may have to slow/stop the video to catch up but da-yam. There are some tasty looking tidbits, treats, and a toastable libation. I’m looking at the crock-pot spice cake, the apple bread pudding, the fall sangria, the cheddar potato bites, and those loaded sweet potatoes. What’s your favorite? Will you attempt any of these goodies?

rescue-moonkwOh, and I just happen to have a book releasing today… Trust me, Hawk and the other Wolves would dive into the goodies in this video. 😉

His secret should have been safe…
Master Sergeant Hawkins “Hawk” Greenwood has all his tickets punched—Green Beret, Ranger, Delta Force, and working ops so secret they don’t show up in his personnel file. On loan to Captain Ghost Bryson’s Delta Force team as a survival instructor, Hawk receives new orders: rescue a school teacher kidnapped in Mexico. His full-blood Choctaw heritage is great for going undercover south of the border, but his secret ability to shift into a wolf makes him uniquely qualified for this assignment.

Her safety should have been assured…
Anthropologist Dana Peterson assumed she’d be safe working on a project for the Mexican Department of Antiquities with her group of prep school students—until the local drug cartel kidnaps them all. The kids have rich parents to pay their ransoms. Dana has no one. Abandoned by the State Department, her only chance for freedom comes in the form of a wolf attacking her kidnappers. When a mysterious man appears to guide her to safety, it’s not desert heat she needs to worry about, but the chemistry flaring between her and her rescuer.

Her blood is the key…
There’s more at stake than meets the eye. Dana has a target on her back—placed there by a shady geneticist. It’s up to Hawk to keep her safe and claim her as his mate because under the full moon, even hearts can be rescued.

Monday Thanks

monday-means-nothingYeah, cats and writers. Thanksgiving is Thursday. This is Day 21 of #NaNoWriMo. As I start the day, I’m only about 400 words from reaching today’s minimum goal. That said, I need to hit my 2500 word count to stay ahead. Wow. I live an exciting life. 😆

So…I have this thing tomorrow. It’s call a book release. I don’t have links yet. Thanks Amazon Kindle Worlds. 😛 Anyway, RESCUE MOON goes live at midnight tonight or thereabouts. I’ll share links as soon as I have them. Set against the backdrop of Susan Stoker’s Special Forces: Operation Alpha, the story is about one of my Wolves, Hawkins “Hawk” Greenwood and his heroine, anthropologist Dana Peterson. It’s fun. It’s sexy. You want to buy it. Trust me!

Football. There was some. OSU won. OSU almost got beaten by Michigan State. I was really rooting for MSU. Wait…What?!?! 😆 MY ‘Pokes beat TCU. That fake OSU was almost taken out of the mix by unranked MSU. Ah well. There’s still hope Michigan will take them out. Do your mojo, B.E.! OU also won. The rankings come out tomorrow. I doubt either of my schools make the top four for the playoffs but there’s always hope.

Reading is sort of…unfulfilling at the moment. Sad, right? Every time I get on social media, I end up angry. I want to live in some other world for awhile but no book I’ve opened has caught my attention–not even my old reliables. The TV shows I have DVR’d don’t resonate. There are no movies…okay. I take that last one back. I switched over to the Hallmark channel last night. I sniffled my way through a couple of Hallmark Christmas movies. Normally, I don’t even start on those until after Thanksgiving. The thing is, as much as I enjoy them, they aren’t truly the escape I’d like. Ah well. Depression is such a harsh mistress sometimes. So anyway…

This is week about giving thanks. About family and friends. About remembering the good things in life. So, this is short–for which I’m sure y’all with be thankful. 😉 I’m thankful for each of you. I’m thankful I live in a land that’s free and I wish people could be happy for that instead of sowing discord and upset. Ah well. I can hope.

So, I’m writing and baking this week. What are y’all doing?

Thursday Thoughts: Universal Investment

universeWow. Everywhere I look I see such anger and hate. I’m not going to point fingers no matter how much I’d like to tee off on people. Wouldn’t do any good anyway. Those I’d be pointing at don’t believe they are doing anything wrong. And just so you know, I’d be using both fingers. Just sayin’…

That’s why this bit of wisdom from the Universe seems very apropos. Instead of spewing vitriol, why not stop. Take a deep breath. Look for common ground. Find a way to have civil discourse. Talk about differences and why we feel the way we do. I know that’s asking a lot. But it’s an honorable goal. In the meantime, people should take a page from the Universe.

Investment Advice for Turbulent Times:

Kindness pays HUGE dividends, Silver, materially and ethereally, forever and ever.

Love on,
The Universe

Live longer, laugh louder, sell more widgets, Silver.

‘Nuff said. May we all find peace and calm sailing in the says ahead. Oh, and here’s to the buying and selling widgets. Can’t ever have too many of those, I always say…
