Monday All Over Again

Monday again babyWhy does this keep happening?!?!? MONDAY!!!!

Okay. Just kidding. Mostly. I finished edits of RDR#3, which has the working title of FOR THE LOVE OF A COWGIRL, at 11:30 Saturday night and it went to my CP and my beta reader. This is one of those books. I fought with the characters the entire time I was writing it. And I’m torn. Part of me thinks the book is so awful I should burn it to a CD, take that CD out and use it as a skeet target. I have a shotgun. I can do this. Another part thinks this might be some of my best work. The rest of me thinks an entire bottle of wine is in order. We’ll see what the readers and my editor says.

Insomnia and I are BFFs lately. I’m sure a lot of it has to do with the stress of the deadline. Of course, I have a couple of more of those coming soon so I don’t get much time off. With the insomnia, I have been reading a lot. I’m on a Kristen Ashley kick. Read all but the last of her Rock Chick series…saving it because I’m supposed to read a book from her Mountain series first, but ended up reading another ‘Burg book and also most of the Mountain series. This is all backtracking because I started with her Mystery Man series and worked through the Chaos MC series. I enjoy her voice. A lot. She has a formula. It works but I’m looking forward to a little diversity when I finish up with AT PEACE. Then I need to go back to the Mountain series for BREATHE and then ROCK CHICK REVOLUTION. I think I’ll read either Jen Apodaca’s EXPOSING THE HEIRESS or Ilona Andrews’ MAGIC SHIFTS. Depends on what I’m writing at that point.

Summer finally caught up to us. It is HOT! But it was August 6 before we hit our first triple digit day. As we say ’round here, it’s ugly hot.

I feel like I’ve been living under a rock for the past two weeks. I need to get social again. I still have a bunch of writing to do so I can’t just take a vacation, but I’m going to try to set up time to be on FB and Twitter again. Problem is, because I’ve been living in Deadline Cave, I don’t have much to talk about. So…you guys need to speak up! What’s goin’ on in your lives?

Wednesday Words: COFFEE

Coffee understandsThe theme for today’s Kiss of Death #1lineWed on Twitter is COFFEE (or tea). Dang it, dang it, dang it! I want to play to day but I have a minimum of 3K words left on RDR#3. I’ll run a bit over the 50K minimum because I still have to fit all the scenes together but I’m sort of seeing a light at the end of the tunnel and it looks like the “COFFEE READY” light on my Bunn coffeemaker instead of a train. 😉

Anyway, y’all know that as addicted to coffee as I am, at least some of my characters have to partake of the caffeine-y goodness. So here are a few snippets from RDR#3…

Georgie has been “installed” in the senator’s suite (Clay), and left to get some rest and see the doctor after her afternoon ordeal and the resulting “rescue” by Clay.

Digging through her suitcase, Georgie found her comfort jammies—worn sweats and a long-sleeved T-shirt that said, “Ways to win my heart…1. Buy me coffee 2. Make me coffee 3. Be coffee.” Not that she was a caffeine addict. Much. She wondered if there was a coffeemaker in the kitchen. If she couldn’t sleep—and she suspected it would be hard—she’d go look. Coffee would be a godsend.

And later that night/morning, she gets a call from her best friend back in DC, telling her to turn on the morning news programs, which she did.

“George? Georgie? Georgeanne! Speak to me. Are you okay?”

“No. I need to die. Like right now. No. I would have been better off dying last night. Oh, Mother Goose, Jen. I am so screwed.”

“You keep saying that. Now what happened! He was holding your hand. And then he carried you. Have you been holding out on me?”

“No. Oh dang it, dang it, dang it.” Georgie needed coffee. STAT. There was still liquid left in her Diet Coke bottle. She gulped it down and glanced at the clock. Four-fifteen. Just after seven a.m. in Washington. She rubbed her face and eyes. This was bad. Really bad. How many times had she dreamed of a romantic interlude with the senator? Way too often, but never played out in front of cameras. And reporters. On the national news.

And finally, back D.C. a few days later, Georgie has a chance to catch her breath and diss with her BFF.

Georgie opened her door, shoved a large, steaming mug into the hands of the woman standing there, and ushered her inside.

“Why are adult snow days not near as much fun as when we were kids and got to stay home from school,” Jen groused as she shuffled in. She let loose with a huge yawn before sipping the hot chocolate in her mug. “Ooh. You put cinnamon in it.”

“Of course I did. Do you want breakfast?”

“What do you have to fix?”

Wandering into her small kitchen, Georgie checked the fridge, and the cabinets. “Uhm…two boiled eggs. Instant oatmeal. And coffee.”

“Put marshmallows in my next hot chocolate and we’ll call it brunch.” Jen settled on Georgie’s couch, propped her killer-rabbit-clad feet on the coffee table and yawned again. “So talk to me.”

Georgie topped off her coffee mug and curled up on the opposite end of the over-stuffed couch doing her best to look like she was okay. “About what?”

What about y’all? Have any characters who love coffee? Want to talk about them? Or share lines? *nods encouragingly*

Tuesday Tidbits – NYC

Here. Have some of the pictures I was going to post on Instagram and FB and Twitter. Except I’m a doofus. I forget to do such things. And I’m never sure how to retrieve a photo I’ve taken to post. Sh’up. Enjoy the scenery!

Blue Literacy signingFirst pic is Blue at the RWA Literacy Signing. You can see how cramped we were and that was before they let people in.

This is Blue looking out my room window towards Time Square. Lots of sirens. Good thing I’m used them. 😉 Time Sq Blue

And last pic for today, this is my “true” view of Times Square during the day. I managed to miss Pres. Obama, Hillary Clinton, and the Times Square protest of the Iran nuclear deal. In fact, I didn’t even know about the protest until Lawyer Guy mentioned it in one of our phone calls. Huh.
Times Sq window

Yes, I have more pictures. Later. I have words to write! Oh, you can click on the pic to get a bigger view and then just hit your back button to return to the blog. At least that’s how it works in my Chrome browser. Later gatorz!

Monday Recap

Coffee MondayI survived RWA. I survived the flights there and back. I didn’t get to as many panels as I would have liked but I got to spend quality time with Jen Apodaca-Lyon, one of my favorite authors and a good friend. I met with my HQ editor several times. I had an agent tell me to write the romantic thriller I pitched and send it to her. I took pictures, which I’ll be sharing here and on FB as the week progresses.

No, I haven’t finished RDR#3 yet, so I won’t be real active around the intrawebz but I’ll be around. I need 4,520 more words (as of the time I’m composing this to post for today) to meet my minimum word count. I’ll have it done today or tomorrow. I made myself cry yesterday afternoon, writing a scene. It was a “throw-away” scene. A press conference. But I got sniffly and teary-eyed. I had to quit writing for a bit.

Which leads me to my current “reading crack” addiction: All things Kristen Ashley. Holy crap, people! I started with her Mystery Man series (Mystery Man being the first book), transitioned into her Chaos MC series (DYING for the next book to come out!) and now I’m backtracking to her Rock Chick series, because these characters have appeared in the other two series. She’s killin’ my book budget. The Rock Chick books aren’t available in my library, thought the later books are. Oh, who am I kidding? I loved them enough to just buy them. There are parts of the books where I’m laughing out loud–I mean I can’t drink coffee and have to make sure I’ve pottied before reading parts of them. This is a godsend at this stage of my writing. RDR#3 is a deeply emotional book. When it gets to me, I can back off and read a chapter of Ashley’s books–oh, who am I kidding, several chapters because…crack!–and clear my head so I can come back to Clay and Georgie. Georgie is surprising me. I originally saw her as rather shy and demur. I’m learning she has a wicked sense of humor, a huge heart, and isn’t afraid to stand up for the man she loves against the media. She’s perfect for Clay, even though they have a lot of shitstuff to work through.

If you aren’t an author, this next bit might not interest you. In June, Amazon changed the way they pay for book “borrows” for those titles in the KDP Select/Kindle Unlimited program, which would be all but two of my self-pubbed books. This means the books are only available at Amazon. Before, authors were paid a dollar amount for each book borrowed, and read through at least 20%. It didn’t matter if the books was 25, 250, or 500 pages long. This meant that if someone borrowed a book 25 pages long, read 2 pages, the author would get paid. Yes, there was a lot of gaming of that system. My books average 40-45K pages. Some are 70-80K, some are 25-30K. I usually made a couple of hundred dollars each month.

Now, Amazon is paying a dollar amount for each page read. Authors were concerned about how this would affect their bottom line. July is the first month this program has been in effect. Here’s a quick rundown from my inner statistician. I almost had 100K pages read, coming in at 99,073 pages total. My lowest daily page read count was 931, my highest 6605. The median page count is 3768, and the average is 3196. Amazon has not announced what the payout will be. Rumor has it that authors are looking at .0058 cents per page. If this is the case, I’ll either make or exceed what I made under the old program, and there’s a possibility (because I haven’t gone back to truly add up the borrow numbers from previous months to compare my royalties) that I’ll double my usual take. I think I like the new formula. Of course, I may hate it by the end of August. 😆

In other publishing news, I got a huge surprise last week. COWGIRL’S DON’T CRY sold through. What that means is I sold enough books to cover my advance plus give me a royalty payment. Since THE COWGIRL’S LITTLE SECRET has better numbers, it should sell through as well. This has me doing happy dances and fist pumps. It also paves the way for even more RDR books. Hopefully.

And one last note. I have cool stuffs to give away. Be sure you’re signed up for my Newsletter because there will be a giveaway there with the next edition, plus some giveaways here and on FB. I enjoyed my stay in NYC but I’m really glad to be home and back to keeping up with all y’all. Mostly. I’ve lost three weeks on FB and won’t catch up, which makes me have a 😦 . But I’ll try to stay abreast of the news starting now.

So, what did y’all do while I was hibernating? I want to know!!!!!!!!!!

OMG! Tomorrow’s Mon–Noooo! Today Is…

OMG Tomorrow MondayI was cruising along thinking today was Sunday. Yeah…no. This is what I looked like about 8:00 last night. I have an excuse, though. Many, in fact! Let me count them.

1. Stormageddon (aka Sprout) got his first haircut this weekend. We had to have a family lunch to celebrate.

2. Stormy has learned to say “PEAS!” while rubbing his chest in the ASL sign for “please.” TOO CUTE!!! No. Really.

3. One week from about the time this went live this morning, I’ll be on my way to the airport to leave for NYC. I told Lawyer Guy he should come home and go back to bed after he drops me off at departures. LOL Good news is, I’ll be in NYC around noon.

4. I’m getting NRCA stuff ready for the trip.

5. I’m getting MY stuff ready for the trip–swag, etc.

6. I’m NOT getting RDR#3 finished. This is a bad thing. I may disappear this week. I’m stuck in a transition scene and I don’t know how to make it compelling. I don’t have time to dither about it. As LaNora says, you can’t fix a blank page.

7. I’m teaching a class at OKRWA on Saturday (postponed from May when we cancelled the meeting) and I’m putting together materials for it–materials I didn’t put together because we cancelled the meeting well in advance and I figured, hey TWO MONTHS! *headdesk*

I’m sure there’re more excuses on my list but I can’t find it for all the stuff stacked up in my office. Plus, I have to buy new shoes. And maybe new boots. I’d love to wear my cowboy boots but the two pairs I have are meant for riding and sitting not walking. Gotta find a comfortable pair. Wish someone made them with memory foam like they do running shoes. 😆

I’ll be very hit and miss around the intrawebz this week unless some miracle happens. And just so y’all don’t worry, I will be back before I leave, but in case not–like I get on a major roll on the WIP–you can keep up with my travels on FB, Twitter, and Instagram. Blue is going with me and I’m going to try to include pictures of him during our travels He is far more photogenic than I am. 😉 Provided, of course, that can I figure out how to post to those places from my iPhone.

So, let me ask this. If you had a friend going to NYC, what would you like ’em to bring back? Cuz, you know, newsletter giveaways… 😀

Friday Sinema – MINE!

Y’all know me and play lists. I have one for RDR#3 but most of them are pretty sniffly because there’s some rocky emotions in this book. I decided I needed a smile and this song always puts one on my face. I don’t have a son, but I have a daughter and if you changed the he to she and football to softball, I’d be standing there singing this about the Only. Have a great weekend!

Thursday Thoughts: Universal Time

universe When this nudge from the Universe hit my inbox, I was reminded of my Faerie Reign books–the River of Time in Tir Nan Og and the various lives lived for better or worse. I was feeling all philosophical when I tapped into it again while looking for a post for today. Then Iffy appeared.

There are days I wish she’d disappear. Of course, she’s never around when I really need her, and always around when I don’t. 😆 Which is my way of saying that now I have all sorts of ideas swirling around in my head. I’ve wanted to write a SciFi story since I read my first Andre Norton *cough* years ago. Don’t ask the direction my thoughts are taking but stars, children, and ten thousand names may someday appear in a book.

Silver, to clarify “eternal” just a smidge…

Once the river of time has rounded her final bend, and the last star in the sky has brightened its last night, and every child who may ever be conceived has been given ten thousand names… we will have just begun.

Got time?
The Universe

Silver, when I think of how much you and I have to look forward to, I have to stop and give thanks that you even exist.

But not for a long time. Too many other books to get written first. But yes, Universe, I have much to look forward to. Deadlines. Books. Fun. Travel. Adventure. And all the wonderful people who visit here. Y’all rock my world and I count your names among those stars. 🙂

Wednesday Words: Loving a Cowgirl

wurkn-on-mai-plan-for-word-domination-caleb-pupAnother hump day, more snippets because as y’all are well aware by now, Wednesday means #1lineWed on Twitter. Today doesn’t have a theme, pulling the lines from page 1, 11, and/or 111. I’m at almost 33K words and working steadily on Red Dirt Royalty #3, with a working title of FOR THE LOVE OF A COWGIRL. That is, of course, subject to change once HQ gets it. 😀

So, from Page 1, in fact, it’s the opening paragraph…

Clayton Barron owned the room—held the emotions, the very hearts and minds of his audience in the palm of his hand. He controlled them with the power of his voice and the words he uttered with such complete conviction. He was in charge, just the way he preferred it. He’d been born, bred, and raised to be a U.S. Senator. Now into his second term, he stood at the podium of the convention of the Western States Landowners Association in Phoenix, Arizona and the words rolled off his tongue, his voice infused with sincerity.

And from Page 11, after an incident with some protesters at Clay’s speech, wherein Georgie got separated from the party and ended up hurt.

He made an effort to soften his voice. “This isn’t your fault. I’m angry at them. I’m angry because this happened to you. I am not angry at you, Georgie.” He smoothed his thumb in small circles against the back of her hand. “We’re headed to the hotel so you can get cleaned up. Don’t…just don’t worry.”

Her bottom lip quivered and she closed her eyes again. Clay felt like a bully but anger still roiled in his gut, the feeling every bit as sharp and bitter as a gulp of vinegar. “I’m sorry, Georgie. This shouldn’t have happened to you.” He cut his eyes to Hunter. The other man’s expression was remote but for the regret and anger in his eyes.

And finally, from page 111 because I’m actually past that point now! *does a virtual cartwheel* Georgie was a last minute “fill in” as an escort for a state dinner at the White House. The limo has just dropped them off at his Georgetown townhouse. FYI, Georgie doesn’t wear heels–except to state dinners with the president. LOL And yes, it’s more an excerpt than a snippet but I love this scene. And since this is a rudimentary first draft, it’ll change majorly before it ever goes to print and y’all will have forgotten you’ve even read it by then. 😉

“Come inside for a night cap.” He didn’t ask, but it wasn’t quite an order either.

Georgie offered him a lopsided smile and limped beside him. He chuckled—not at her discomfort but at the twists and turns their conversation had taken. How did they get from her feet hurting to his position in the senate? He glanced back over his shoulder and dismissed Hunt with a short nod. Georgie would be staying the night.

Inside, he settled her on the couch—a piece of furniture chosen for comfort far more than design. Deep, long, and covered in aged “bomber-jacket” leather, a man could nap on the thing during a football game or could sit and read countless bills, feet propped on the overstuffed ottoman.

“Wine?”

“I’d prefer decaf coffee. Or a Diet Coke?”

“I can handle that.” He checked the fridge. No Cokes. Time for plan B. Microwaves heated water, right? And somewhere in the pantry was a jar of coffee. Hopefully. Rummaging, he got lucky—a box of Starbucks single-serve tube things. Vanilla latte flavor. Georgie must have left them over here after one of their marathon strategy sessions. He emptied one in a coffee mug, added water and stuck it in the microwave for four minutes.

While he waited, he pulled on his black tie, unraveling the bow, and popped the first two buttons on the starched white shirt. The microwave dinged and the water was boiling when he reached in. Maybe four minutes was a little long. He found a bigger mug, poured the boiling water in and added a splash of cold water from the tap. He stopped dead. Did Georgie use cream or sugar? Did vanilla latte need extra? He had milk, if it wasn’t sour. And sugar, if he could find the sugar bowl.

“Ah, Georgie? I fixed one of your Starbucks vanilla latte things. Do you need milk or sugar?”

“Thanks, but no. It’s good just the way it is, Clay.”

Her voice wafted in from the living room and he breathed in relief but made a note to restock his fridge and pantry. He carried the mug out and handed it to her with a caution. “It’s hot.”

Writers, do you have something to share from pages 1, 11, or 111? Readers? How about you? Grab the book sitting next to you and share a line, along with the book title and author! 😀

Monday, Funday…Or Not

dear-monday-i-want-to-breakup-im-seeing-tuesday-and-dreaming-about-friday-sincerely-its-not-me-its-you-9bb80I leave for New York City in two weeks. *FLAIL*

I have a manuscript due in 42 days. *FLAIL* At least I’m almost half way to my word count.

But it’s Monday and it’s time for a weekend update. 😀 Friday was an FTA day for the James Gang. We loaded up in Drover (my Highlander) and headed down to Meers for burgers and a little sight-seeing/photography. We got back about 4 p.m., the kids loaded up and headed home and Lawyer Guy and I headed inside to nap. We’d been up since 5:30 with Cooper. He’d done something to his foot/leg/shoulder/ear and cried every time he moved. We doctored, etc. and he was better so we made the road trip. He was much better when we got home so LG hit the couch, and I hit bed. Woke up in time for the 10 o’clock news. eye roll I was back to sleep by midnight and then up and moving Saturday morning. I did stuff Saturday. I don’t remember what it was. Yeah, exciting.

Sunday was spent getting ready for NYC. I’ve ordered postcards with my Harlequin covers, ISBNs, and info to hand out to the librarians. I’m still working on other stuff to put into gift bags for them. I also ordered new, sexy business cards and mugs with the business card on them – one for use at signings, one to give away in my next newsletter. Wanna see?
Wild Side business card2

Did I write? Not a lick. Which is why I’m flailing over my second sentence up there. I have so much crap to get done between now and then. Just remind me that I love deadlines! I also read but I can’t remember what I read off the top of my head. What about y’all? What did you do this weekend?
