Monday Morning Quarterback

I almost forgot to post today. I’d like to say it was because I had this fabulous, fun-filled weekend but…

Well, okay…truth be told, it wasn’t a bad weekend. I’ve been fighting this lousy chest cold and I made the mistake of starting a book Friday night. I knew better than to start it at bedtime, but… Yeah. It was so good, the cold meds that normally knock me right into ZZZZZland didn’t even touch the reading frenzy.

Saturday, I spent the day pretty much in bed. It was cold and raining so I slept in, napped, refused to read. 😆

Sunday, it was COLD! I mean cold enough to freeze certain parts of a witch’s anatomy. The Only and I headed up to Guthrie anyway for our photo shoot. She got some awesome shots for a book cover she’s been commissioned for. Shhhhh. I can’t say much for now. Suffice it to say it’s a well-known author. And we got some full length shots of me for PR purposes. I’ll hopefully post my pick of those later in the week.

In sports news, Team USA is moving to the next round of the World Baseball Classic tournament. It was in doubt there for awhile! The surprise team is Italy. Who knew?!?

What about y’all? Good times this weekend? Good books? Good food? Friends? Oh, and that book that kept me up all night? Kerry Schafer’s debut fantasy, BETWEEN. I. Love. This. Book! It’s all about dreams, dragons, and a penguin. Yeah, I know, but trust me on this. Read the book!

Links of Friday Fun

I love Art Deco–art, furniture, architecture. I came across some really cool, retro posters with messages that are totally modern. Check out MY MODERN MET to see them.

Some of you may remember an old, unfinished project of mine, working title AGGIE AND THE ZOMBIES–a historical paranormal that I WILL finish one day. Well, here’s what genre it is: GASLAMP FANTASY Click for an article and definition. I got all excited so Aggie has moved a little closer to the front burner. 😉

Speaking of High Fantasy! Got GoT? (Game of Thrones). Here’s an article about the upcoming season, starting March 31, and the official trailer. Definitely worth the CLICK to WATCH THE TRAILER!

Who has fun plans this weekend? I’m working and doing that delayed PR shoot. And reading. I hope!

How to Amuse a Cat

Deeders with b-day heartThis is Adidas. Around these parts, we call her Deeders. Stupid Cat. Damn Cat. And Queen. Okay. That last one is what she insists the boys call her. ALL the boys–two and four-legged.

She has hidey-holes all over the house and is quite adept at disappearing when I’m looking for her–like when one of the boys gets the garage door open and it’s some time before I realize it. She’s a cat. She doesn’t come when she’s called. So I go looking because heaven forbid the critter be left in a chilly garage for any length of time.

Adidas never comes when she’s called. The day I found her, I’d heard her mewling for three days already. When I’d step out on the front porch to get the mail, I could hear these pitiful cries. I’d call, the cries would stop. I’d wait and look but nothing. Until the next time I’d come out to get mail. I finally put on long sleeves and gloves to go poking in the holly hedge where the noises seemed to emanate from. I finally located her cute little kitten self in the base of the bushy evergreen tree at the corner of the house. I got her out and she’s been here ever since.

So…yesterday, I decided to photograph the silver and stone heart Lawyer Guy bought me for my birthday. I didn’t even get the camera focused before Deeders arrived and took over the photo shoot. And the necklace. Yes, she’s wearing it. *rolls eyes*

What does this have to do with writing? A lot, actually. Plots and characters and readers are like cats. They have places to hide you can’t find, they never come when they’re called, and you have to entice them out with something shiny.

I’ve dealt with my share of sulky characters. When they’ve taunted me enough, they usually settle down and cooperate. Plots? Plots I have to chase down, running through the house, calling it’s name, and hoping it didn’t slip into the cold garage, to curl up shivering until I can find it and turn up the heat. Readers? I’m not sure I–or any other author–will ever figure out readers. That means I simply need to write a story I want to read, put it out like cream on the back step, and hope readers come by for a taste and then decide to stick around for the whole meal.

I’m not doing that last part right yet. It comes down to “I can write” or “I can sort of market while I write” or “I can market.” If any of you have suggestions, I’m all ears! (Okay, eyes since this in text. 😉 ) This will be an on-going topic around here as I wander through the house trying to find all of Deeders’ hiding places.

Whimsy, Going Commando, and Wednesday

DreamsWhat do writers do more than anything else? Yes, we edit and market and socialize on internet medias. Yes, we submit and worry and fret until we get word back. Writers do all of these things. Constantly. But what ONE thing do we do all the time?

We make it up–and we make it up as we go along.

According to the Universe, we have some help.

The lions and tigers and bears of time and space, Silver, are really the angels and fairies and unicorns that followed you here, in disguise, from worlds beyond, agreeing to poke, unnerve, and awaken you should you ever begin to forget that you’re making it all up – your life, that is.

Now that’s love –
The Universe

True, Silver, they also lost the bet that you’d, indeed, “go human, commando” no less…

When this hit my inbox, I got all giggly-giddy. My first thought went to the Penumbra Papers. Once ROGUE MOON is finished, I can jump back into the world of human “commandos”, werewolves, gargoyles, faeries, witches, and other things that go bump in the night. No unicorn yet. But considering I once had an impressive unicorn collection, I may just have to rectify that in a later book.

But back to my point. The one thing that writer’s do–or should be doing–is MAKING IT UP! We dream and spin our dreams into words that tell tales of…everything! Love. Death. Heroes. Villains. Catastrophe and calm waters. Whatever we can dream up in our imagination can be given wings by our words. How freaking awesome is that?

And speaking of awesome…Wild Rose is still celebrating Read an Ebook Week and FAIRY TALES CAN COME TRUE is free today on their SPECIAL SALES PAGE! If you already have a copy, go see what other books are free today!

Stars in Her Eyes

Guess what should be visible tonight? Comet Pan-STARRS. Experts say the comet should be about as bright as the stars of the Big Dipper.

Come twilight (the time of day, NOT the movie/book!), look to the western sunset sky. It passes closest to the earth tonight (March 5) and on March 10, it’s closest to the sun–optimal viewing according to spaceweather.com.

The astrology folks say the best dates to view the comet may be March 12 and 13 when it emerges from behind the sun, not far from the crescent moon. I would think that makes it easier to locate, with the moon for a reference point!

When The Only was small, we made a point of sharing things like this with her. We drove for miles to get away from city light contamination to see the Northern Lights when they were visible at this latitude/longitude. We’ve laid on a blanket on the ground watching the Perseid meteor shower. We curled up in lawn chairs to watch the space shuttle transverse the sky from horizon to horizon.

When I step outside tonight to watch for the comet, I’ll miss her. I hope she’ll step out of her own house to watch, and when she and Baseball Boy have their own little ones, they’ll take moments like this to share the wonder.

This geek moment was brought to you by the letters N, A, S, and A. What about y’all? Will you be comet watching?

Monday News, Books, Updates and Stuff

Did everyone have a good weekend? Raise your hands if you did. *raises hand*

I didn’t get enough sleep but that’s my own fault. More about that in a moment. The Only had to reschedule our photo shoot. Her main model was called into work so we’ll be doing some additional PR pics next Saturday. Even so, we’d done some previously and all my social media sites have been updated. You can click on the “About Me” page to see a larger photo. It shows off my new hair do. 😉 Only and I were busy over the weekend, too, making new headers. Check out the Moonstruck page for her new header and the Novella page for the one I made. I’ll be updating things around here periodically.

Lawyer Guy and the kids gave me some wonderful birthday presents. I’ll feature them in a photo essay later in the week. (I was too lazy to take pics in time for this post. 😛 )

I’ve read two really good books lately, and about as disparate as books can get. First up, Jennifer Lyon’s THE PROPOSITION (The Plus One Chronicles) is now available in all ebook formats. Jen returns to her roots of sexy romantic suspense with this series and I have a new BBF (Book Boyfriend) in Sloane Michaels. I stayed up way too late last week reading this book but it was worth it!

The other books is an older YA, Melina Marchentta’s JELLICOE ROAD. It’s on digital sale for $1.99. I checked this book out from the library and then bought it. I started it after dinner Saturday night. I finished it just before dawn Sunday morning. It destroyed me. I cried after I closed the cover–for the characters and because the book was over. This book made my heart hurt but I would read it again in a heartbeat. Disclaimer: This book is written in 1st person present POV. I. HATE. THIS. POV. I mean with stabby fingers to my eyes hate this POV. But I could not put this book down. The plot creates a perfect circle of life. The writing is both delicate and gut-wrenching. The book is mystical. And I had to nap Sunday afternoon.

What about y’all? Read a good book? Do something fun? Need to catch up on sleep? Don’t forget the free ebooks at WILD ROSE!

Here’s to the Next Sixty

I should be so lucky, right? I’ve decided since my emotional age is so much younger than my physical/mental age, I’ve lived only half of my life. I’m ready for the next half now.

Maybe.

The first step in my journey is this redesigned–mostly–website. I want more control over my life and my career so I’ve taken over the complete care and feeding of my site. Any mistakes will be mine. Any headaches will be mine. Has anyone seen the aspirin? Or the pitcher of margaritas?

When I first started the Penumbra blog, I was taking my first baby steps into the on-line world. I had no clue about branding, about publishing, marketing, SEO stuffs, or networking. I’d written a couple of books but nobody was interested. So I jumped in feet first with no plan. And here I am six years later with a published back list and more books to come. There’s a lot I still don’t know but I’m learning. I’m hoping it is possible to teach an old dog new tricks. Switching servers, mapping domains, and creating a new site has been a challenge. I’m still having bugs but I truly hope the rest of you don’t have any problems accessing the site.

My new home is still fairly bare-bones for now. I have plans. I’m working on things, slowly. The main thing was to make the switch and have everything in mostly working order in time to celebrate today. Look around. Make yourselves at home. PLEASE tell me if anything is broken. I have glue. I’ll fix it. There are no “archives” at the moment. All previous posts are tucked away on a CD. I want a fresh start here so I’m starting “new.” That said, I don’t want to lose what I had so it’s been put back for safe-keeping.

What’s so important about today? Today is the first day of the rest of my life. 🙄 Yes, I know. That old chestnut of a bad Sixties poster is still around. But it’s true. I’ve lived six decades. I don’t want to look back. There’s been some tremendous highs and some devastating lows. I’ve said hello and goodbye more times than I care to remember. I want to look forward from this day on. So that’s what I’m going to do.

I hope my old friends stick around, and new friends decide to take a chance on this old broad. As Dr. Seuss said, “Oh, the places we’ll(sic) go. There is fun to be done!” Are you ready? Now somebody cut the cake and pour the margaritas!

This is a Test

Please turn off all electronic devices, return your seatback and tray to the upright and locked position and prepare for landing. The new and improved home to Silver James and her menagerie of characters and critters will be taxiing to the terminal shortly.
