Something Monday This Way Comes

funny-pictures-i-know-those-feels-monday-catWe could run and hide from it, but why would we want to avoid it? If Monday wasn’t Monday, then Tuesday would get the bad rap. And we’re used to Monday being…well…Monday.

So how was your weekend? Our weather did a 180 and when we went out for dinner last night to belatedly celebrate The Only and Baseball Boy’s anniversary, we didn’t even wear jackets. Crazy. But this is Oklahoma. Our weather is always bizarre. Saturday, Lawyer Guy decided to run errands with me after lunch and we ended up in Office Depot. OD is the Place of Evil for me. Shinies. Everywhere. I didn’t escape unscathed. I found a new desk chair. Not that I wasn’t in desperate need of a new chair or anything. The old one was ten. And two rollers didn’t roll anymore (dog hair clogs that not even needlenose pliers could remove) plus the fact that both arm rest pads were held together with camouflage duct tape. I won’t even discuss the padding on the seat. Anyway, early birthday present to me so YAY!

I also read. A lot. I finished Anne Bishop’s WRITTEN IN RED (more about it in Wednesday’s Words), then started and finished Cecy Robson’s latest release in her Weird Girls series, CURSED BY DESTINY. The last book in this series left me both pissed and heartbroken. I know, it’s a weird combination. I laughed more reading CURSED. Oh, don’t get me wrong, there was lots an angst, action, and arrogance–on the part of the alpha characters. I’m currently reading an older anthology, FOUR DUKES AND A DEVIL with shorts by Cathy Maxwell, Elaine Fox, Jeaniene Frost, Sophia Nash, and Tracy Ann Warren. It’s not bad. A quick read.

Have I mentioned my massive TBR pile? I have 89 paper books (and more coming when they’re released) and probably that many unread on my Kindle. In order to clear space, I’m reading one Kindle book followed by one paper. That way, I clear those shelves and can either send books to the local VA hospital for their volunteer library or I can do giveaways here and on Facebook. 😀 Anyway, RED was a library book, CURSED was digital, and the anthology is paper. So far, so good. I guess that’s another resolution I made. 😀

Curious about the shows I DVR’d? Of course you are! 😉 First, KILLER WOMEN, a new series on ABC. It’s about a female Texas Ranger and runs 8 weeks. I like Molly Parker (the character played in kick-ass glory by Tricia Helfer) and her sexy DEA FWB, Dan Winston (played by Marc Blucas). The reviewers don’t like it. Which means I enjoyed the hell out of it. 😉 The other new show I wanted to see is CBS’s INTELLIGENCE, with Josh Holloway. It’s different. It got rave reviews. Based on the premieres, I’m more likely to keep watching KW than INTEL. We’ll see what happens next week.

So what did y’all do this weekend? Fun stuff? Lazy stuff? Good stuff? Let’s talk about the stuff today! *pours a cup of coffee and settles in to visit*

Who’s Ready for Friday?

I’m having coffee with two writing buddies this morning. Not that I need a break or anything but simply because every once in awhile, it’s fun to get together and talk about writing, brainstorming, wins, and losses.

Since I’m off enjoying the caffeine life, lets talk about coffee! Ev sent me a little desk calendar with daily random coffee facts. The two that made me laugh so far are both quotes.

I’ll quit coffee. It won’t be easy drinking my Bailey’s straight, but I’ll get used to it. It’ll still be the best part of waking up. ~”Karen” (Will and Grace).

AND

If it wasn’t for coffee, I’d have no discernible personality at all. ~David Letterman

Not a big Letterman fan but I can identify. And the Bailey’s reference cracked me up. My question to y’all this cold, rainy, dreary Friday is this… How do you take your coffee? Maybe this chart will help you decide. 😉

Universal Imagination

universeI’ve had this little gem from the Universe tucked back for a rainy day. Only the sun is shining. And the temperature is warming up a bit. As I was looking back through my drafts, I found this and it spoke to me.

Silver, if it was just about surviving, getting by, and keeping things the way they are, then how would you explain imagination?

If it was just about sacrifice, selflessness, and altruism, then how would you explain desire?

And if it was just about thinking, reflection, and spiritual stuff, then how would you explain the physical world?

Get the picture, Silver? Want it all. That’s what it’s there for.

Vroom, vroom –
The Universe

And if it was just about working, Silver, how would you explain weekends?

Yes, this. All of it. I know I’ve been “trapped” in a cycle of each of these things. When life pressed in dark and heavy, a spark from my imagination would light the way. When I got lost in spinning stories in my head, unwilling to face the real world, something always jarred me loose so that I came “back to life” as it were. And for a very long time, it was all about the work. Seven days a week. Pushing, demanding, so focused I lost the spark–the one thing I truly needed to keep working. My imagination. I’ve learned, this past year. Balance. I need it. I need to remember what my dad used to tell me: Set aside some dreaming time. But I also need to remain committed to moving forward with my career.

So…weekends, huh? What do you have planned? 😀

Wednesday Words – Going Dark

mobile phone and booksAs some of you know, I got sucked into rereading the Carpathian novels (at least the first few) by Christine Feehan. I discovered the series at a time when I was NOT reading romance and paranormal romance was an unknown “species.” 😆 I found one of her books in a bargain bin, decided it looked interesting, and bought it. I think, if I’d read the books from the beginning, and back-to-back, I would have picked up on things much quicker. Maybe. Since I first started reading them, I’ve also learned a lot about the craft of writing. That makes a big difference, as far as I’m concerned.

First, I’m not belittling Ms. Feehan in any way. She has legions of fans–including me–and is a NYT best-selling author. What I’m saying here is something many of her fans are aware of and choose to ignore. I get that. 🙂

In the beginning of the series, there is a lot of repetition–in language and in plot. The young, virginal heroine is fighting her destiny, the alpha hero is overpowering but it’s all due to his DNA and instincts to protect her from her own folly. It’s not until the fifth book that this starts to lessen somewhat. Oh, and the sex scenes. Yeah, once I started skipping over those, I read the books in no time. raised eyebrow gif FYI, there are a LOT of sex scenes. And they are very similar. Because, seriously? How many ways can you describe Tab A and Slot B when the H/H are going at it like rabbits? Not to mention the fact they stop to have the sexxy-sexxors at like the WORST possible time–the evil vampire is hunting them, the sun is almost rising, one of them has been hurt… I mean, srsly?

The good thing about the series is there is intricate world and mythos building. That’s my thing. If that foundation is there, and it’s good, I’ll overlook a lot of other sins. Ms. Feehan has that in spades. And her heroes are pretty darn yummy, too.

The problem becomes, however, especially with a reread, is that the “art” of paranormal romance has grown by leaps and bounds. Jen Lyons’ Wing Slayers, Larissa Ione’s Demonica series, Nailini Singh (though I haven’t read her), Jeaniene Frost’s Cat and Bones…they all grabbed the idea, expounded and expanded, and ran with it. Their writing, characterizations, and plots are more sophisticated. It’s hard to go back and not nitpick all the little irritating things. Like “black magic,” “black velvet,” to describe the hero’s voice. And OMG, EVERYTHING is dark. His dark eyes, his dark mood, his dark heart, his dark hair, his dark emotions, dark possessiveness…ad infinitum ad nauseum. Oh, and “masculine,” “feminine,” and erotic.

Yes, I know. It sounds like I’m really ripping this series but I’m not. This was ground-breaking stuff when it was released. Publishers were trying to cash in on the LKH/Anita Blake popularity (which is a whole ‘nother deal!) and Feehan’s Dark Carpathians was a credible venture. I read almost every book, up to a point. I stopped when the books became too repetitive for my liking. Ms. Feehan branched out, pulling in a group of leopard shifters into the Carpathian world, added a series about genetically enhanced soldiers and women experimented on as children (Ghostwalkers), and her Seven Sisters, about witches. I enjoyed those series, though I’ve fallen behind as other authors grabbed my attention.

Should I mention that I have 3 books waiting for me to pick up at the library, 3 book were just downloaded to my Kindle from pre-orders, and I’ve found an Allison Brennan Lucy Kincaid book I haven’t read yet because it got lost in the shuffle? *headdesk* This should tell you that I AM a fan of the “Dark” series because I was drawn in to rereading the first 5. The rest will have to wait–even though I’m curious about book 7, which was the first one I read in the series. I have other books to read.

So…is there a series that you find irritating but you keep reading anyway? If so, why? What compels you to pick up a book to reread it or grab the new release? Is it the hope it’ll get better? Or is there something that keeps sucking you back in for more? Yeah, I get that. 😆 I want to know what you think!

Baby, It’s Cold

Welcome to Tuesday’s Treats, the Artic Vortex version. I think we need to talk about hot things–coffee, food, men… EyebrowWiggleIn

Coffee and comfort food always go together when it’s cold outside, right? So how about coffee food? No, seriously. Okay, so not so seriously. 😆 I went looking for a main dish recipe that had coffee as an ingredient. LOTS of desserts. Main dishes? Not so much. Ah well. How ’bout I share my quick chicken pot pie, then. We can drink coffee with it. 😀

1 can cream of chicken soup
1 can diced potatoes, drained
1 bag frozen mixed vegetables
2-3 boneless chicken breasts
Bisquick
Cube and saute chicken. Partially thaw mixed veggies. Mix veggies, potatoes, and soup in a 1-2 quart baking dish. Add chicken and stir. Mix up a batch of Bisquick biscuits and drop on top of mixture. Back at 400 degrees until biscuits are golden brown. (approximately 30-35 minutes.

And now, how about hot men…Mrrrr. The new Fox show, ALMOST HUMAN returned last night. The futuristic show stars Karl Urban, as burned-out cop John Kennex, and Michael Ealy as Dorian, the detective’s “obsolete” android partner. The byplay between these two is funny and both Urban and Ealy make my heart go pitty-pat. This is near future but if you hate Sci-Fi, probably not for you. But, here, have a pic of them so you can see what I mean. 😉

Michael Ealy (Dorian) and Karl Urban (Det. John Kennex) – Almost Human on Fox

How are you staying warm?

Monday of Lazy, Catch-up, and Stuff

lol monday coffee Why yes, I do resemble this today, why do you ask? I’m late. I know. I normally write a blog post and set it up the day before. But I took yesterday off. I didn’t even turn on the computer. And dang if I’m not paying for it this morning. I have 167 email in one account and 97 in another. I suspect most of that 167 are Facebook notifications. *sigh*

So, it’s Monday. All day. And about 5 degrees outside. Only I really have to get out. Dogs are out of food and I’m almost out of coffee. Either event could be disastrous. 😆

Totally random thoughts: Pitcher/catchers report February 5th and MLB Spring Training starts on Valentine’s Day. That’s better than chocolate. Almost. Baseball is my sport. I watch the Superbowl for the commercials.

Speaking of sports, OU beat Alabama. Yay. OSU (Ok State) lost to Mizzou. Haz a sad. That other OSU (Ohio State) lost. There’s a National title game tonight–Auburn vs. Florida State. *yawn* Did I mention it’s only 30 days to pitcher/catcher? 😉

More randomness–I’ve been sucked into the vortex that is Christine Feehan’s Dark Carpathian series. I’m on book…5? It’s hard to remember because they’re all so much alike. Sadly. But there’s still something oddly…enticing about them. Lots of sex. LOTS of sex. And these books were out back in 2000.

Okay…I’ve stalled long enough and had my first cup of coffee. The brain is functioning. Sort of. How was your weekend? And are you frozen in your neck of the woods?

Friday the First Free-for-all

mobile phone and booksI’d actually thought about starting the new schedule on Monday because…first day of the week, right? But since today is Friday, and with New Year’s falling in the middle of the week–which makes Thursday and Friday sort of a non-week…

Anyway. I keep seeing those Best of the Year lists floating around the internet. Since I started off my Goodreads challenge with a reread of a series I once enjoyed, I got to thinking about rereading series. Also, B.E. and I chatted about this via Facebook, because rereading a favorite book doesn’t count toward the reading challenge. 😛

So…here’s my Top Something List of Series I Reread:

1. In Death/Eve Dallas – JD Robb. This is my favorite series of all time. Period. NAKED IN DEATH, the first book is my “chicken soup” book. Once I’ve read it, I feel almost compelled to reread the whole series. All 30 books. *headdesk*

2. Charley Davidson/Grim Reaper – Darynda Jones. There are only 5 books currently, with a novella. The 6th book releases in May. Yayayayay! Darynda’s Charley is a delight–funny, snarky, determined, and OMG is Reyes hot! Seriously HOT!

3. Allison Brennan. Okay. That’s a writer, not a series, but all of her suspense/thrillers are interrelated and mostly set up as trilogies, but for the Lucy Kincaid books. That’s a series, but all those characters in previous books are still around. This makes me have a happy. 😀 You don’t have to read them in order but yeah. If romantic suspense is your thing and you HAVEN’T read Allison, why the hell not?!? You can find her book list HERE. She’s starting a new series this spring.

4. Cat and Bones series – Jeaniene Frost. I came to this series late, and scrambled to catch up. The last true “Cat and Bones” book comes out this spring. I has a sad. 😦 These are paranormal–Cat is a half-vampire slayer. Bones is the vampire who wins her heart.

5. Jayne Anne Krentz/Jayne Castle/Amanda Quick – again an author. I started with her Harmony series (Castle) and quickly added the Krentz and Quick books that are Arcane Society/Harmony related.

And here’s a quick, off-the-top-of-my-head list of favorite series I’ve read in the past, even if I don’t stay current (except for Jen Lyon’s series. I’m all over it if she publishes more!):
1. The Wing Slayer Hunters – Jennifer Lyon
2. The Neurotic Hitwoman series – JB Lynn
3. Witch World – Andre Norton
4. Dragonriders of Pern – Anne McCaffrey
5. The Sacketts – Louis L’Amour
6. Sherrilyn Kenyon – Darkhunters and just about everything else
7. The Bullet Catchers – Roxanne St. Claire
8. The Highlanders – Karen Marie Moning (I still need to read her Darkfever series)
9. Aisling Grey series (and sub-series) – Katie McAllister (Dragons! Who could resist)
10. Demonica series (and sub-series) – Larissa Ione
11. Joe Leaphorn/Jim Chee Navajo police series – Tony Hillerman

So, what series is on your must buy list? Do you reread books?

New Year, New Schedule

lolcat perspectiveI hope all of you had a safe New Year’s! Welcome to 2014. As mentioned at the start of the week, I’m posting a series of “informational” blogs. I’d love your input on my plans for the coming year!

One of my words for this year is ORGANIZATION. One of the places I plan to get organized is here. I’ve done a lot of assessing, market research, and whatnot this last quarter of the year. I don’t know how long it will last (we all know how UNorganized I am!) but I’d like to get the blog on a schedule. That way, when I know life is going to be crazy, I can pre-schedule things. So…here’s my thinking.

Monday Mayhem: This is all about the fun–what happened over the weekend, crazy news, random thoughts, etc.

Tuesday’s Treats: Another grab bag of items–recipes, movies, TV shows, Pinterest stuffs, etc.

Wednesday Words: I’ll be sharing the books I’m reading (and writing) and I’ll post short quotes that caught my eye.

Thursday’s Thoughts from the Universe: The Universe is far too astute for me to stop sharing it’s wisdom.

Friday Free-for-all: Sort of like Monday, Friday will be a mishmash of ideas. I’ll share book deals/sales, host friends for guest blogs, post those silly “sinemas” that catch my eye. Oh, except for the last Friday in the month. The last Friday is Forensic Friday. Forensic Friday will be a grab-bag of real-life stories from my career and how I “twisted” real-world forensics to fit into my fantasy worlds. Sound interesting? I hope so!

So, what do y’all think? I’m here to entertain you folks. Does this stuff appeal?

Saying Goodbye to 2013

notebookDear 2013-

Where did you go? It seems like just a few days ago that I was trying to figure out what to do with you. You had such possibilities, so shiny and new. And here you are, old, wrinkled, well-worn. We had some times, didn’t we?

This is goodbye. I know you don’t want to break up. It’s me, not you. Okay, it’s you, but you can’t help it. You came with an expiration date and at midnight, you’ll fade into the annals of What Once Was.

Speaking of goodbyes, I had a few this year. They always make me sad, even if–ultimately–some of the farewells are for the best. I miss those who have moved on. Some know how I feel. Others? I can’t speak for them. They may be just as happy to have me gone, like the old year.

2013, you presented me with more opportunities. I continued to pursue my road to independence in the publishing arena. You weren’t quite as good to me as 2012 was, but that’s okay. We learned new things together, you and me. And we stretched. This was good. You kept me DEDICATED month-to-month and I thank you for that. You saw the “birth” of Sade, Sinjen, Caleb, Ariel, Roman, Nikos and the other denizens of the Penumbra Papers. You brought new readers for MOONSTRUCK and taught me that I can’t say goodbye to the Wolves and their families. I’ll just have to work harder to make room for them in the schedule. 😀

I learned from you, dear 2013. I learned I could stand on my own, to take chances, to move on when life deemed it necessary. Thank you for that.

I don’t know what your newer, shinier brother will bring, but I can’t really complain about you. All in all, you were good to me, though you left some unfinished business. Hopefully, 2014 will take care of it.

Sometimes, 2013, we were BFFs. Other times, frenemies. That’s okay. You weren’t perfect and the Universe knows neither am I. We managed to sort out our differences and get along for 365 days. Take care of yourself, old friend. I have your memories recorded. I won’t forget you. And isn’t that the final word? To live on in someone’s memory?

All the best-

Silver
