Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow

TomorrowOops. It’s Tuesday. Uhm…yeah. About that… I didn’t turn on the computer Sunday. No pre-loading of blog posts. And yesterday, while I did make my rounds visiting other blogs, with brief stops at Twitter and Facebook, I pretty much kept my head down writing. Except when I was fighting with Iffy. The Muse and I have been doing a lot of that lately. If I didn’t know better, I’d think she was a teenager instead of a tantrum-prone toddler.

Today, I’m still fighting with her. *sigh* Why? Because she keeps throwing new twists and turns into the ROGUE MOON. I’m at the freaking end of the book. I need to be tying up loose threads not weaving new ones!!! This is the book that’s supposed to bring a satisfactory conclusion to the six-book story arc. Yeah. About that… *headdesk* I am going to finish off this series with this book. I’m going to snip these threads off, tie them up, and be done with it. For now. Someday, Iffy will get out of the closet, find her scissors, and if I’m lucky, she’ll get all involved in the next project. If not, she’ll just have to wait her turn. So there. *phbbthhh*

Today is another “low key” day as I struggle to finish up so I can get the darn thing sent to my CP. That’s the goal.

Tomorrow? See the graphic. That’s my only comment. 😉

Who has fun plans? Besides Joe and ice cream…

Familiars, Rules, and Maps–Oh My!

It’s Thursday already?!?! I haven’t done a post about links of awesomeness in awhile. Today feels like a good day for it.

And since it’s Thursday, are you ready for WICKED FAMILIAR CHAPTER TWO, In Which Something Familiar This Way Comes.

For the writers among us, this article by BRENDA NOVAK is well worth the read.

And for everyone else? These. Yeah. Okay. These MAP PORTRAITS are just plain cool–and tell me there’s not a plot in there somewhere!

Have a great day! And remember, tomorrow is Friday. Woot, woot!

Good Omens, Books, and Readers

mobile phone and booksBefore I ever created my first imaginary friend–an elf named Loyal, before I ever created tales of witches and horses, of a magic talisman transporting teens back in time, of a girl masquerading as a boy in the Civil War, I was a reader. I read about little rabbits who wished for red wings, about a girl named Alice and another named Dorothy. I read about twins, teen detectives, a black stallion, and boy named Tom Swift.

First and foremost, writers should be readers. Instead of “write what you know,” the adage we follow should be “read what you write.” And read what you don’t write. Read what you enjoy. Read for knowledge, for pleasure, for escape.

With that in mind, I’m going to throw out some book titles. The first is GOOD OMENS. Released May 1, 1990, this book by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, reminded me that to be a good writer, I had to be a good reader. This is not a book I would have picked up at the time, but someone gave it to me as a gift and a book is a book. I read it. And loved it. It was the book that returned my imagination to the dark corners, to the “dark side,” if you will. If you haven’t read it, check it out. It’s become a classic.

Anyone who’s known me long knows I’m a big fan of Leslie Kelly–her sexy Blaze category romances for Harlequin and most especially her two dark romantic suspense series Black CATS and Extrasensory Agents. Due to circumstances and on account of because, Leslie had to put both series on hiatus. She’s now trying to get the rights back so she can re-release them as well as new books. So…DON’T BUY THOSE BOOKS! *gasp* I know. You can buy them later. For now, though, Les has just released the first book in a new series under the name Leslie A. Smith! Dark suspense with a touch of romance and slightly futuristic, DON’T LOOK AWAY is book one of the Veronica Sloan series. I haven’t read it yet, but our own Liza gave it five stars! It’s close to the top of my TBR pile.

And as long as I’m talking about writers I know and love, and suspense with romance, let me also recommend the Faces of Evil series by Debra Webb. B.E. had Deb as a guest on her UNPUBLISHED WRITER blog this week. Deb’s personal story is one of courage and perseverance. She was a best selling Harlequin suspense author (her Colby Agency series is much loved by throngs!) but after an injury, she moved a different direction. The result is the FACES OF EVIL series. Book 4, RAGE just released last week. If suspense is your thing, then these books are for you!

Me? I’m going to catch up on FACES, read DON’T LOOK AWAY, and reread GOOD OMENS. And then I’m going to rate/review them wherever I can because that’s one of the best way I can support authors as a reader. I can “talk” about their books.

So what about y’all? Any of these recommendations prick your curiosity? What are you reading? Not like I need any more books on my reading list but… 😉

Brenda Doing Good

It’s May. Many of us may still be wondering where spring went, but when I think of May, I think of Brenda Novak and her fantastic charity auction!

GO HERE to check out the auction or just click on the banner. There are AMAZING items to be had. For everyone. Readers. Writers. Collectors. Fashonistas. Trips. Just. So. Much. Stuff! I ran out of time this year to put something together for the auction but I’ve participated before as both a donor and as a buyer. I’ll be putting bids in on a bunch of stuff throughout the month. The hardest part is narrowing down what I want. 😆

So go over there. Wander around. Decide what you want, and then come back and tell the rest of us. 😀

Monday Sekrits, Spoofs, and Sunshine

Spring is back. Finally! I’m looking at blue skies and I might be able to turn the heater off. Wow. I mean, it’s only the freaking SIXTH OF MAY!!!!

LIMECELLOparanormal_wickedfamiliarBut even more fun is the fact that it’s time to reveal that Sooper Sekrit Project I mentioned some time ago. Go HERE to Limecello’s A Little Bit Tart, A Little Bit Sweet blog for the 411 on the project. Go ahead. I’ll wait….(Oh, and you can click on the cover to get the full-sized version! 😉 )

*whistles*

*starts laundry*

*gets fresh coffee*

Ah! Welcome back. Now you know what started things. And the results? I was the first to accept Lime’s challenge so this past weekend and on every Thursday through May, there will be a new chapter of WICKED FAMILIAR. The first installment is HERE. I had an absolute blast writing this thing and I hope people find it funny and entertaining. It’s also a primer for how NOT to write a romance. 😉

Also, stop by B.E.’s blog THE UNPUBLISHED WRITER’S GUIDE TO SURVIVAL. The fab Debra Webb is a guest today talking about her fantastic suspense series, The Faces of Evil. The fourth book, RAGE, just released.

I finished up the first eight books in Laura Adrian’s Midnight Breed series, started on reading more contest entries, and worked on ROGUE MOON this weekend. I’m almost to the end of it and it’ll head to my CP and editor SOON! Yeah, yeah. I know. I’ve been promising that for ages. Sh’up. What about y’all? Who went to see IRON MAN 3? Who did other fun stuff?

Saturday Sinema – Dutch Masters Style

I haven’t posted on a weekend since Six Sentence Sunday ended, and it’s been way longer than that since I did a Saturday or Sunday “Sinema” but this video is just too awesome not to share! The Rijksmuseum in Holland recently reopened after a ten-year-long renovation project. To celebrate and advertise the reopening of the world-famous art museum this “flash mob” appeared at a mall in Breda, Netherlands, recreating Rembrandt’s “The Night Watch”. Enjoy!

Friday Fun – Evolution Music Style

Are your favorites in this medley? If this group ever appears around here, I’ll have to check them out. They sound as much fun as Straight No Chaser! 😀

Happy Friday. Who has something fun planned for the weekend?

Global Warming?

Seriously? It’s only supposed to hit 42 degrees with rain/sleet/snow mix. Hello, people. It’s MAY for cryin’ out loud! I figured I’d better go out and grab some pictures of the few flowers blooming in my yard. I have some gorgeous yellow and purple irises and my two rosebushes have buds. The wisteria only put out three bracts of blooms. THREE! I have two vines that are in my oak trees climbing over 60 feet. Just about the time the vines budded, we got a hard freeze. In APRIL!

Dear Mr. Gore, you are full of horse pucky. Our local meteorologist has been saying that ever since the discussion started. Weather is cyclic. This is the coldest spring in 100 years, despite a warmer than normal winter.

That said, I’m not here to discuss science, non-science, or the politics of weather. All I know is that it was 80 degrees yesterday, and this beauty was right outside my window. I thought I’d post it for those of you with snow on the ground. I also want to know what your favorite spring flower is. We might as pretend it’s spring, right? So…name your bloom. 😀

Universal Rules

universeYesterday, on Janet’s blog, the subject of rules was brought up. There were some interesting comments. I had this little gem from the Universe tucked back in my files and this seemed like a good time to bring it out.

Never create rules, Silver. Not ever.

Not for others. And especially not for yourself.

Unless, of course, this is your rule.

Born free,
~~The Universe

Don’t you love simple, Silver?

There are certain “writing rules” that really chafe my @$$. Limited POV/POV shifts is one of them. Not mixing genres is another. Hello. My name is Silver. I am a cross-genre writer and I “head hop.” I’ve discovered a term for how I write: the Cinematic POV. Sounds classy, doesn’t it? Lawyer Guy came up with it. I have to give him credit. When I read, I want to know what EVERYONE is thinking. I want to see the scene through their eyes. Screenwriters handle this with POV shifts within the script. I don’t understand why fiction writers can’t do the same thing–well, besides certain editors proclaiming “That’s the rule!”

Guess what? There are writer’s out there who do this. Nora Roberts (especially in her JD Robb persona) does this–and does it quite effectively. Okay, I will admit that there might be writers out there who should follow the rule. If the technique doesn’t flow naturally, it can be an unmitigated mess.

Rules can stifle creativity. Rules can curb the imagination. Rules can get in the way of the storytelling. But at the same time, I believe a writer should be aware of the rules before breaking them. Or ignoring them. Or making up new rules.

Writers, what writing rules make you crazy? Readers, what broken rules drive you crazy when you read? But more importantly, are you born free?!? 😉
