Cyber Monday 2017

Long four-day weekend for a lot of people. Who did the whole Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and are now doing Cyber Monday thing? Yeah, me neither. I did get some work done and then I hit a mental block and spent Saturday and Sunday staring at the last chapter. Sucks. So, my week in review…

Writing…yeah. Road block. Two days of staring. A couple of audio books to hide in. Procrastination. Today. I’ll knock that sucker out today. Or else.

Thanksgiving was laid back. Baseball Boy did a turkey breast. We brought bread and pumpkin pie. T-giving went straight to the best part–turkey sandwiches. Yum, yum. Oh, and I splurged on a Fields Pecan Pie. They’re made down at Ardmore, OK and They. Are. To. Die. For!

Sports: OU and OSU both one. There were upsets. Tuesday’s standings for the college playoffs will be interesting.

TV: Live PD for the win! That and a few Hallmark movies. It’s still the season.

Reading: Okay, listening. I’ve discovered Suzanne Wright’s shifter series The Phoenix Pack and The Mercury Pack. They’re free on my Kindle Unlimited subscription to both read and listen. They’re a bit formulaic but the heroines are strong and usually funny, the heroes are alphas, the sex is down and dirty, and there’s a lot of action. There might be some triggers so if you check them out, be aware. I’m enjoying them.

And now…that blank white is still staring at me. That’s my goal this week–finish the last chapter and epilogue, plus edits. I have four days until the end of the month and that’s my self-imposed deadline to send it back to NY. Off to work! Drop a comment to let me know how your world is spinning. 🙂

Thanksgiving Thursday Thoughts: Universal Payback

Here in the US, today is Thanksgiving. It’s a time for family and food. For those who are into it, it’s the day to plot and plan your shopping expedition on Black Friday tomorrow. Most of all, it’s time to give thanks for all we have received. And it’s time to remember the second half of the word: GIVING. It seems the Universe agrees with me.

It’s always better to give too much, pay too much, and love too much, than not enough.

But then, Silver, since everything comes back to you anyway, can there ever be too much?

I love you too much anyway,
The Universe

And not just for the karma, Silver.

Yeah, karma can be a bitch when she comes back and bites you. Sometimes, she’s an angel in disguise when she goes after those who might actually deserve her teeth. 😉 Put something good out into the Universe today–not with the expectation that it will come back to you, but just because it’s the right thing to do. And don’t eat too much turkey or pumpkin pie. 🙂

Wednesday Words: A Time for Thanks

On this Thanksgiving Eve, this week’s #1lineWed theme of **THANKS/BOUNTY/HARVEST** is in keeping with the holiday. Of course, writers could take that in different directions with a “no thanks,” bounty hunters, and I’ll just leave “harvest” up to the horror fans. *bwahahaha* I’m going with the more traditional meanings. If I’ve shared this snippet before, sorry. It’s been a long time since I started this book. Anyway, this is the first meeting for Tucker and Zoe. On the side of the road, having blown either the radiator or the engine of a classic Trans Am. Just sayin’… 😉

****
Someone cleared his throat and Zoe jumped. She whirled to face the stranger she’d passed on the road. Oh, good lordy, why was she being so sorely tested? This man was…gorgeous. Standing there like the cover on one of those magazines in the grocery store checkout line. He was tall—towering at least a foot over her. His dark hair was short, cropped almost like a soldiers but had way more style. He looked perfect, unlike those narrow-between-the-eyes hillbillies with their shaggy pelts and beards and who would be on her trail all too soon. She refocused her attention on the intruder. Eyes the color of cornflowers crinkled in amusement. And his mouth. She could kiss that mouth for days and never need to come up for air. In other words, he was trouble in spades as he stood there in those tight blue jeans that hugged him like a jealous lover.

“Having a little car trouble?”

“Ya think?” She snapped at him and didn’t know what to do when he grinned at her.

“I’m a man. We’re masters of the understatement.” He eyed the beast, his expression dubious. “Need a lift?”

“I’m fine.”

“Uh huh. Sugar, I think you blew the engine. This bird isn’t going to fly any time in the near future.” He gave her the once over and she felt—actually felt his gaze touch her. She shivered inside. Guy-dar. On the fritz, she reminded herself sternly. She’d hitched the ball-gown skirt of the wedding dress up around her middle, which bared her legs. They might be short but she’d never had a man complain.

The dude cleared his throat. “So, sugar, want me to call a tow truck for your car?”

“No.” In truth it wasn’t her car. She didn’t give a flip if it sat here on the edge of the road from now until the day after the end of the world.

“Look, this is the back of beyond. Let me at least give you a lift to the next town.”

“I’m not goin’ to the next town. I’m headed to Nashville.”

“Fancy that. So am I. I’ll take you.”

And that was the whole problem. She wanted him to take her. He was still looking her up and down, interest sparking in those too-blue-to-be-safe eyes of his, and dang if her own bits weren’t checking him out and hoping for a cave man. Ugh. What was wrong with her?

“All the way to Nashville?” That would give her a big head start on the Smithees. Red was in prison down in Alabama. Norbert couldn’t find his way out of a plastic bag and the other Smithee brothers and cousins were like ants running in circles because a mean little kid poked their hill with a stick.

“All the way.” He held up his phone, and his brows creased in a cute way that made her want to kiss his forehead. Whoa, girl, she chided herself. This whole Handsome Man Syndrome was what landed her in this mess to begin with. “Huh. No bars. I’ll call a wrecker when we hit civilization.”

Zoe leaned in through the door and grabbed her duffel bag and guitar case. Everything she owned fit in both. “Fine. Let’s go.” She marched past him and got jerked to a stop when he snagged her bag.

“I’ll put these in the trunk. The ’bird doesn’t have a back seat.”

Well, that was a relief. Back seats were only good for the devil’s work. No matter how much fun that work might be. While the man deposited all her worldly goods into the minuscule trunk, she stomped to the passenger side door and snorted when she saw her veil crumpled there. Bad Karma. Definitely. Zoe stuffed the ugly thing onto the dashboard and did her best to maneuver into the seat. Nothing worked.

“May I help?”

She startled and banged her shin on the car door. Dang but the man was sneaky. She’d need to remember that fact. “No, I’m good. Thanks, kindly.”

He stood back, arms folded across a chest that filled out his crisp button down shirt as well as his butt did those jeans. He’d rolled the sleeves up to reveal tan forearms sprinkled with dark hair that glinted copper under the sun. Nope. He was not sexy. He was a man and they were on her Not-To-Do list at the moment. With much huffing and puffing, she squirmed her way into the tight fit. Between the hideous excuse for a wedding dress and everything else, she’d need a forklift to get her out of the darn thing.
****
Tucker will eventually be thankful for this runaway bride. And Zoe will be thankful that Tucker stopped to give her a ride. What are you thankful for this Thanksgiving season?

Tuesday Treats: Pumpkin Fluff

Imagine dipping graham crackers, gingersnaps, or vanilla wafers into this light and fluffy confection. Yum! I also had a thought for a quick and easy pie using this recipe. Consider using the spice ingredients from the Libby pumpkin pie recipe and using a pre-made graham cracker crust.

Prep Time: 10 min.
Total Time: 1 hr. 10 min.
Servings: 32 servings, 2 Tbsp. each
Dip into dessert with cookies or crackers and scoop up a taste of our fluffy pumpkin dip. Perfect for the holidays—or anytime, really!

What You Need
1 can (15 oz.) pumpkin
1 pkg. (3.4 oz.) JELL-O Vanilla Flavor Instant Pudding
1 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
1 tub (8 oz.) COOL WHIP Whipped Topping, thawed
cookies and/or crackers

Make It
Mix pumpkin, dry pudding mix and spice in large bowl with whisk until blended.
Stir in COOL WHIP.
Refrigerate 1 hour.

CLICK HERE to get all the nutritional details and a video. This is such a simple recipe that any of my characters could make this. However, this sounds like a Hannah recipe, even if she makes it into a pie. She could get Liam to scrape out the pumpkin for her and then it’s just opening cans, dumping, and stirring. Easy peasy. While Major Hannah Jackson McIntire appears in all the Moonstruck books, you get to know the most about her in MOONSTRUCK: SECRETS and since we’re coming up on Christmas, CHRISTMAS MOON.

Monday and Stuffed Turkey

So, another Monday and another week closer to both my deadline and Christmas. I need more coffee. Today’s update will be mostly short. There was a week and a weekend. Bye. Okay, okay. Not really. But it will be a quick rundown.

Sports: Yeah. My Cowboys lost. At least OU won. End of story.

Reading: Have you heard about Audible’s Romance subscription service? There’s a 30-day free trial and you get to listen to as many of the books they have in the “special” collection as you want. At the end of 30 days, the program will cost $6.95 for Audible subscribers and Kindle Unlimited members. Or listeners without a subscription can access the Audible Romance package for a $14.95 monthly fee. I’m doing the free trial. I’ll see when it comes time to renew. I’m currently doing a re-listen to the Chronicles of Elantra series by Michelle Sagawa. I have a few of them on Audible already. I can get the rest of them through the program so yay! I also tried a new to me author. I got about two chapters in and decided not to finish it. The author will get paid for what I listened to and I can return the book and not feel bad because if I’d paid for it and returned it? The author doesn’t get any royalty. So, it’s a way to try new authors and books, plus enjoy old favorites I normally get from the library.

TV: I’m binge watching both the Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Mysteries and Movies channel because…’tis the season.

Writing: I’m doing some! I’m thissss close to The End on Tucker’s story. I’ve reworked the opening to the next Red Dirt book in my mind–it’s been bugging me so trust me, this is a good thing. I got hit with the ol’ light bulb moment for a Nightriders book (more about that in a sec) and I’m looking at my writing schedule for the rest of this year and 2018. Things shake out like this, but nothing is carved in stone. This is just sort of an outline and as y’all know, I’m a puzzler/pantser, not a plotter. So in no particular order except for #1 and 2…
1) Finish Tucker’s story and Cooper’s proposal by the end of the year.
2) A novella for Elle James’s Brotherhood Protectors Kindle World in April.
3) Wizard’s story, Nightriders.
4) Ariel’s story, Penumbra.
5) Cooper’s book and hopefully either Bridger or Boone’s.
6) A Hard Target book, not sure who the hero is.
7) A Christmas novella set in the Nightrider world, with Gunner as the hero. His heroine’s name is Harper. She’s older–a widow. It’ll be fun. And maybe a stuffed turkey.
Again, no guarantee, but that’s the plan.

Speaking of plans, what’s yours for this week? I’m not stuffing turkey. We’re doing sandwiches and pie, either here or somewhere else. Plans are in the air. Mainly, it’s getting this book finished, edited, and sent to New York. Have a great week!

Friday Sinema: Roundtable Rivals

As you regular readers know, I’m a huge Lindsey Stirling fan. I think she’s incredibly talented and imaginative. She’s still in the running on Dancing With the Stars and about the only reason I’m still watching at this point. In the Halloween segment, she and partner Mark Ballast danced to her own composition, “Roundtable Rivals.” This is the original video she did of the song. Have fun!

Thursday Thoughts: Universal Self-talk

It isn’t easy. Nothing ever is. The world crowds in demanding this and that, taking rather than giving. And it gets hard. So hard there times when hiding under the covers for the rest of the day seems like a smart thing to do. Times when dealing with the world is just too freaking hard. Times when the hard piles on so deep you wonder if you can breathe. Times when you look around and other people seem to keep finding the easy path and all you get are roadblocks. So, do you sit and wallow or do you square your shoulders and keep putting one foot in front of the other? Yeah, my dad didn’t raise me to be a quitter. So what if things are tight, if sales are down, if the world seems like it’s going to hell in a handbasket. (What does that even mean?!?!?) As long as I’m breathing, there’s a chance.

Almost no one ever says it will be easy.

Actually, most say it will be hard. Really, really hard.

What do you tell yourself, day after day, Silver?

Besides all the sweet talk, Silver?

Sweet talk? Naw. I wouldn’t know what to do with sweet. I need to kick my own ass from time to time. Today is one of those days. I now consider myself kicked. How’s your day going?

Wendesday Words: Rough and Tough

It’s that time of the week again–#1lineWed and today’s theme is **ROUGH/TOUGH**. Those words totally describe Zoe Parker, the heroine in my current Red Dirt Royalty WIP. She’s perfect for Tucker Tate. 😀 This is a scene from Chapter 3 (unedited) where they’re driving down a highway in Tucker’s vintage T-bird. I hope you enjoy this introduction to Zoe.
***
Tucker let Zoe drive as she seemed to have some clue as to their location. She didn’t pop the clutch when she shifted gears, instinctively braked before hitting the curves, then powered through them by accelerating. He slowly unclenched his hands where they gripped her duffel bag. The day was sunny, not too warm, and her not-quite-a-groom and definitely scary not a mother-in-law were way behind them. Besides, by not driving, he could study this runaway bride.

Zoe was pretty, though not in the beauty-queen sense. Her eyes, hidden now behind big sunglasses, were a deep chocolate brown. Her chin was too long, her mouth too wide but not full, and her nose tipped up on the end. Her long, dark brown hair fell in twisty—and hair-sprayed—curls down over her cleavage. There was just something wrong with him for thinking about her in any sort of sexual way, but he couldn’t help himself. She wasn’t the sort of woman he would normally be attracted to.

Her accent was thick enough—and country enough—he could cut it with a knife. He had a Harvard MBA and remembered all too acutely the disdain he’d received for his Okie accent. He’d worked hard to smooth out its rough edges. Zoe? Her language was colorful and brash, and whenever she opened her mouth, the lyrics to a country song spilled out. Maybe that was her fascination. Tucker continued to study her.

Long, supple fingers—and didn’t the idea of them gripping him like she had them wrapped around the steering wheel make him shift in his seat. They ended with short nails covered in chipped red polish. Her arms looked well-toned and he wondered what her figure was like before the pregnancy. He jerked his thoughts away from jumping down that rabbit hole.

She drove with a carefree abandon that still exhibited a determined focus. She was a gypsy, from what Tucker had gathered—a free spirit not ready to settle in one place. Except she’d decided to keep the child of a man she claimed was a one-night stand she didn’t wish to marry. Zoe was a paradox and his curiosity might just kill his cat. Good thing he didn’t own one.

“You’re staring.”

“Yup.”

“I need to pee.”

“Okay.”

She cut her eyes his direction. “I’ll be stoppin’ at the next place we come to. You can drive after that.”

“What about my car?”

“What about it?”

“You hotwired it.”

“Oh, yeah. I did now, didn’t I?” She flashed him a cheeky grin that quirked the corners of her mouth and his body answered accordingly. “Just as soon as I take care of my business, I’ll fix those wires back and your key will work as good as new.”

“Are you sure about that?”

She made a pfft sound before she laughed. And man did the sound of her laughter arrow straight into his core. He could listen to the pealing sounds for an entire day. “Honey, I learned how when I was ten so I could borrow the neighbor’s car without askin’. My daddy couldn’t drive so I’d take us down t’the local dive where I could play for my supper and his drinks. We had t’fix it proper when we brought it back so the neighbor’s wife didn’t get pissy ’bout us borrowin’ it in the first place. She was a right piece o’work. There were times ol’ Mr. Jeffers came with us just t’get away from her.”

This woman fascinated Tucker. And he worried about that, just a little. She was raw and uncouth. She said what she thought with no filters, and no matter how horrified he might be, he still found himself enjoying the entertainment she provided. In the back of his mind, though, resided that little voice of doubt. Was she telling a tall tale, or was this the truth of her life?
***
You decide if Zoe’s telling the truth. In the meantime, feel free to share some rough or tough words of your own.

Tuesday Treats: Crockpot Pumpkin Pie

I found this recipe somewhere and tucked it back to be posted when the leaves turned and the temps cooled and the scent of pumpkin pie spice fill the kitchen. I’m not a huge fan of crock-pot desserts but when I read the recipe thought this sounded pretty darn tasty and easy. Granted, I haven’t tried it–yet. Anyway, I dug it out for today and I might just give it a try between now and Thanksgiving just to see. I did find the recipe posted somewhere else and I posted the link below so you can check it out if interested.

Ingredients:
1 can (15 oz) canned pumpkin puree
8 (oz) evaporated milk
1/2 cup cream soda
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup Bisquick, divided
2 eggs, beaten
4 tablespoons butter, cut into 8 pieces
1 Tablespoon pumpkin pie spice
Whipped cream for garnish

Directions:
Combine pumpkin, milk, cream soda, vanilla, brown sugar, 1/3 of the Bisquick, eggs, and pumpkin pie spice in large bowl. Pour into crockpot and top with 1/3 cup Bisquick mix. Place slices of butter on top, then cover with remaining Bisquick mixture. Cook on low for 6-7 hours, serve, and enjoy!

Believe it or not, this most likely is a favorite recipe made by Isabelle Fontaine, Rudek Tornjak’s heroine in ROGUE MOON. It’s still warm down in the bayous on Thanksgiving and being able to toss everything into a crock pot and let it cook all day? Certainly sounds like the Cajun way to me. And you can bet that Rudy gets all snarly and possessive when Izzy tells him he has to share with the rest of the Wolves. 😉

CLICK HERE to see the step-by-step with pictures. Be sure to let me know if you make it!
