Universal Inspiration

universeI know, I know. I’ve been defaulting to the Universe a lot lately. It’s not so much that I haven’t had anything original to say so much as what the Universe is dropping in my inbox mirrors so much what I’m feeling. (Not to mention that I have like 15 of these suckers in my draft box! 😆 )

I took a three day weekend. It wasn’t planned. And Monday wasn’t really a day off–I forgot to do a post Sunday night–and I had like 600 emails to sort. About 30 of those were actually business and the rest were FB/G+/Twitter notifications.

The insomnia plague has hit again. I turn off the lights and close my eyes. My brain refuses to shut down. I wish it would at least give me interesting things–INSPIRATIONAL things (like a new plot twists or something!)–or simply gentle thoughts that would help lull me to sleep. Nope. No such luck. So I toss. I turn. I feel every little ache and pain. I flip through 800 channel of Nothing to Watch. I give up and turn on the light and read. Or pace the floor.

Or think about things the Universe throws at me. Like this:

Where there is pain, there will be strength.

Where there is sadness, there will be wisdom.

And where there is fear, Silver, there will be renewal.

We learn from you,
~~The Universe

And where there is Silver, there will be love… and students, fans, groupies, the usual suspects.

Yeah, don’t know about that last part. Did I mention that depression and self-doubt are BFFs with insomnia? Yeah, well… But I need to remember there is something good on the other side. And I need to remember that sometimes, I just need to sleep with the light on. And in the spirit of this post (since I’m all about the musical inspiration lately!), here’s your Tuesday earworm:

Saturday Sinema: Someone Somewhere

OMG! Hear me doing the fangirl squee?!? How many of you miss watching Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough being all sexy and wonderful on “Dancing With the Stars”? *raises hand* I was looking for a song to write a scene to, something about longing and needing and unrequited love that would sort of go with the chapter title, “Still of the Night,” and with the emotions of the scene between Sade and Ariel.

And this is what I found. You’re welcome. 😉

Bucket List 61-70

notebookAs I prepost this, I’m not sure exactly where in the world is Carmen Sandiego. Or me. If I remember, I’ll have updated this prior to it going live. If I don’t (which is most likely 😆 ), what you read is what you get. I was heavy into the intangibles at this point of this list, getting all existential and shitstuff. 😉

61. Learn to let go of my anger.

62. Get even. shifty-eyes-ani2faster

63. Find peace (see #60, 61, & 62)

64. Renew my faith in the Universe.

65. Make my friends smile every day. 😀

66. Make Cherries Jubilee without burning down the house.

67. Drink a bottle of Dom Perignon.

68. Tour the Glen Fiddich distillery.

69. Tour the Guinness brewery.

70. Touch my toes with my knees straight. [I can do this on good days so it’s comin’ off the list! Just sayin’… 😉 ]

#68 and #69 pretty much sum up my alcoholic preferences. Though I actually like Harp better than Guinness. But…Guinness! Since it’s still summer and still hot, today’s question concerns cold libations. What’s your favorite?

Dreaming in the ‘verse

universeGoing to Nationals leaves me with a lot of feelings to sort out. I’ve just spent a week rubbing elbows (and getting hugs) from New York Times best-selling authors and writers who are just starting on their journey to publication. Excitement permeated the air. Optimism reigned. I watched those seeking the ears of prospective agents and editors nervously pace while practicing their pitches. I listened to seasoned writers discuss the changes in the industry and how it will affect them.

I congratulated winners and consoled those who didn’t receive the award they’d come close to winning. I celebrated good news and commiserated over bad.

When I got home and finally had a chance to clear out my inbox, the Universe had dropped this little gem into my lap.

Big dreams come true, Silver, as easily as little ones.

Rich dreams come true as easily as poor ones.

Friendly dreams come true as easily as lonely ones.

And you and I will be together, until the end of time.

So…
The Universe

P.S. It’s not the size of the manifestation that matters, Silver, but the size of the dream. And I got you, babe.

The main thing I learned at RWA13 was to dream big. So that’s what I’m going to do. I plan to work hard, but as my dad often reminded, I will set aside some dreaming time–to dream big, dream rich, and dream friendly. And I will sing both parts of the Sonny and Cher song at the top of my lungs. Because I can.

What’s your big, rich, friendly dream? Besides not having to listen to me sing… 😉

Getting Home

It was a dark and rainy morning. Actually, it IS a dark and rainy morning. A massive and unpredicted (as of the 10 o’clock news/weather last night) storm rumbled through at 5:00 this morning. Almost an inch of rain fell and now I’m staring out my window at a shadowy world of overcast skies and green washed free of a coating of dust.

Coming home after being away is always a mixed bag for me. I crave the comfort of my own bed, my own coffee, my furry critters. I miss the…normalcy of things–sitting in my chair at my desk, checking my RSS blog feed (more about that in a moment), and working.

Being away is both stressful and fun. I love going to RWA Nationals–reconnecting with old friends, discovering new ones, and feeding off the sheer creative energy of 2000 writers all in one confined space. But at the same time, the shy kid who talks too much to overcompensate shows up and I sometimes…okay, quite a lot actually…feel foolish. ‘nough said.

My blog travels are curbed at the moment. I’m taking that as a sign I need to be writing. Most of you know that Google killed Google Reader, my preferred RSS/Blog feed. I migrated to The Old Reader and have been happy with it. Except they experienced growing pains and crashed over the weekend. They’re diligent working on it, but I have to admit, I’m too lazy (and a little too busy) to Google every blog I follow. Once TOR is back up, I’ll catch up with everyone. In the meantime…

I learned a lot while I was gone. I reconnected. I’m infused with new enthusiasm. I hope to have news in a month on something. I also had some interest in the new Hard Target series (yeah, really need to get the first one written!). Cross your fingers, ‘kay? And now it’s time to work. I have a brutal, if self-imposed, deadline schedule coming up. So much to do and so little time. Iffy? You better strap into your seatbelt, darlin’. I’ll speed-feed you chocolate and hopefully, your fans will supply you with hot guys to keep you inspired! 😉 I’ll be posting more about RWA13 as time goes by.

Bucket List 51-60

notebookAnother Friday, another list. Are y’all sick of this yet? As y’all know, Lawyer Guy and I are on the road this week and next. Tonight, I’ll be announcing the winners of the National Readers Choice Awards. Tomorrow night is the RITA announcements. Sunday, LG and I leave Atlanta to take the long way home. I’ll be back on schedule in a bit. Until then, gosh! Pre-scheduled bucket list post. *bwahaha*

51. Get the rewrite of Season of The Witch started… I have started…#52, that’s another story…

52. …and finished. 😛 Okay, I’m almost finished. It’s in final edits!
52A. And published! (Coming this fall!)

53. Learn to make animated icons. They are called GIFs, and I’ve made several. 🙂

54. Learn Photoshop. [Yeah, that’s not gonna happen. That’s why I have The Only.]

55. Become computer literate. [See #54 *snort*]

56. Have a mountain cabin…

57. …and a vacation home in New Orleans.

58. Have a library – a real one – at home.

59. Get a big screen HDTV (that’s more for G but what the hey….I’m really struggling to get to 99 here…) Happy Father’s Day and Anniversary!

60. Learn patience.

About that last one…As long as there are stupid people in the world, I despair of ever crossing that one off. And next week, there are more like that one. Lofty goals. Do any of these resonate with you? Have a great weekend!

Bucket List 41-50

notebookHa! I should have started doing these twenty at a time because the first item on today’s list relates to #40. And iPods. And how I should get one–which I did, but then lost it. And I’m halfway through the list. Yay!

41. Learn how to use the iPod I should get before I do that…*nods* [I sort of learned how before I lost it. Darn things are tiny! And yay for iPhones!]

42. Clean out my office and get it organized. [I’ve moved offices. But this is still on the list. Because I still have stuff in the old office and the new office is totally disorganized. Again. :P]

43. See a wild wolf.

44. Reread the “In Death” series… [Did this. Several times. Not marking it off because I’ll read them all again!]

45. …and the Witchworld (Andre Norton) series – at least the ones I’ve collected. [I’m still finding newer ones that came out after I quit reading. That’ll be a vacation project on of these years.]

46. Watch all the DVDs on my TBW list. [See #30 which had to do with books on my TBR pile. Another unreachable intangible! 😆 ]

47. Attend RWA Nationals. [I go every year now. Maybe I should change this to Thrillerfest, since I also belong to the ITW now. Hrmmmm…]

48. Meet Jim Butcher. (Author of the Dresden series of books) [This could happen. I’ve met his wife and sister. On Twitter, anyway. 😆 ]

49. Write a screenplay that is made into a movie.

50. Write a book that is optioned so I get to write the screenplay that is made into a movie.

I’ve written a couple of screenplays. I have a couple of books that might make good movies. Well…I think so anyway. So, here’s a question for you. What book that you’ve written (writers) or read (readers) would you like to see made into a movie?shifty-eyes-ani2faster

Humping to Get Ready

bags-are-packedYes, it’s Hump Day. Who’s seen that insurance commercial with the camel? I’m not going to mention the company by name but it has a gekko as a part-time spokesthing. I have to admit I laugh.

Me? I’m working on getting ready for RWA Nationals. Putting swag together. Finalizing plans for the NRCA reception, meeting up with friends, and figuring out which workshops to attend. It also means lots of errands while I make arrangements for critters and housesitters, getting wardrobe x 2 ready…dang…laundry! BRB…

Yeah…laundry. My favorite thing. Not! 😆 Anyway, I don’t have much to say but you might want to check the “control panel” up top. I’ve added some news, the Penumbra Papers has its own tab now, and if I remember correctly, there are a couple of pics up on Heroes and Villains. In case anyone is interested…

This Friday, there will be more from the Bucket list, and the same the following Friday. In the meantime, I’ll be pretty quiet. I’ll try to update on Twitter and Facebook as I have time and internet connection. Internet is always at a premium during RWA! Doing updates from my iPhone is always an exercise in frustration but I’ll try.

If you are anywhere near Atlanta next Wednesday, I’ll be the Literacy signing. Here are the DETAILS.

Here’s your question for the day… What author would you most like to meet? (And you don’t have to mention me. I figure if you’re hanging out here, that’s a given! 😉 ) I want to know your Bucket List author(s). Me? I’ve been lucky enough to meet most of mine!

Guest Interview–Darius and Siobhan

Today, I have a special treat. One of my new favorite authors, Siobhan Muir, recently caught up with the hero in her new release, THE BELTANE WITCH. I had some questions for Darius and Siobhan recorded the encounter for all of us to enjoy!

TBW-webfinalI stepped into the cool interior of the Cloudburst Coffee and Spa and sighed in relief. Cloudburst, Colorado, faced a bad, hot, dry summer despite its name and air conditioning was in high demand. Moira Callahan, the coffee shop’s proprietor, raised her eyebrows and tapped her wrist from behind the counter. I grimaced and nodded. She’d been waiting 9 months for me to get on her story, but there’d been too many previous to her and a few plot bunnies distracting me in the way.

But today, I was here to meet with Darius Winterbourne, the man who’d turned Sabrina Foxglove’s world upside down in a space of one week. Now, two months later, they were planning a spring Equinox wedding.

I spotted Darius in a leather armchair, reading an extreme sports magazine, and slid into a matching chair across a low table from him.

“Hello, Darius.”

“Ah, Mistress Muir. So good to see you again. I trust you’re well?”

“Yes, thanks.” I pulled out my tablet and a crumpled piece of paper with Silver James’ questions. “Ready for your interview?”

He raised an eyebrow and grunted with amusement. “Right to business, I see.”

“See that woman over there?” I pointed at Moira Callahan working behind the counter. “She wants her story finished, and I have a Menage a’ SEALs breathing down my neck to finish theirs, so yeah, I don’t have a lot of time for small talk.” I leveled him with a look. “As I recall, you informed me on January 1st that the holidays were over and I needed to get your damn book done, so I think you’d have some compassion for the others.”

Darius smiled indulgently. “Yes, of course. Forgive me, Mistress Muir. I’m happy to answer any question you pose to me.”

Ah, so he’d decided to wear his Chamberlain hat today. Fine.
“Good. So first question. There’s a saying: A good friend will come to bail you out of jail, but a true friend will be sitting next to you saying, “Damn, that was fun.” Who would be sitting next to you, Darius?”

“Ah yes, the fond days of wreaking havoc on the unsuspecting.” He chuckled to himself, his teal eyes flashing. “That would be my younger brother Phinnius. He and I would often cause my mother consternation and frustrate my older brother, Tiberius. At least until our father left.” Darius sobered so suddenly I thought I’d imagined his good humor. “But yes, my younger brother Phinnius would be seated beside me asking when we could do it again.”

“What happened to your father?” I pretended to type in my notes on my tablet as I surreptitiously watched his reaction.

“I neither know nor care what’s become of the nameless whoreson.” His voice remained flat, bland even, but his fist closed on his thigh.

Kind of a harsh thing to say about his grandmother.
“Right. Okay. What do you think about friends with benefits? Good idea, or too complicated, and why?”

“Friends with benefits?”

“Yeah, you know, fuck buddies, a sexual partner you have no intention on marrying or courting.”

He grunted, his expression thoughtful. “There was a time I thought it a worthy pastime. In truth, it’s very common in the Summer Court. Fidelity appears to be a foreign concept to the courtiers of the Summer Queen. My elder brother Tiberius particularly enjoys cuckolding the elven lords of the Court.” Darius grimaced. “Perhaps one day he’ll learn what an empty life it is engaging in such activities. After meeting Sabrina Foxglove and her daughters, the idea of using her to ‘scratch an itch’ is as repugnant as the pathetic churl who got her with child and walked away from his children.”

I snorted. “I’m surprised, Darius. I thought you were the darling of the Summer Court and highly experienced for the position.”

He scowled. “I cannot change the past, but cheating on one’s spouse is deplorable. And leaving one’s children is grounds for gelding.”

“That’s fairly harsh. I know a few women who might agree with you, but I suspect there would be very few men.”

“Hence the gelding.”

“Right. Let’s move on.” I scanned my notes for something not quite as sensitive. “Describe your personality with five adjectives that would make an English teacher proud.”

Darius blinked. “An English teacher?”

I held up my notes. “That’s what Silver asked.”

A sly smile curled his lips. “Heroic, courteous, dependable, honorable, and personable.”

“Uh-huh. And what five adjectives would Sabrina use?”

His smile shifted to rueful. “Arrogant, manipulative, persistent, unbelievable, and stubborn.” He rubbed his hand over his chin. “But I still managed to win her over anyway.” His gaze shifted away toward the counter and he straightened up. “Forgive me, Mistress Muir. Do you have any other questions for me?”

“Uh, no, why?”

“I must go meet up with my ladies for pizza night at the Rainshadow estate.” He rose and bowed over my hand. “As always, it is a pleasure to see you, Mistress Muir. I hope to see you again soon.”

He sauntered through the coffee shop and almost all the female patrons watched him go. I had to laugh. He might be taken, but there’d always be eyes on him. Good thing Sabrina had won his heart.

Definitely a good thing, Siobhan! I loved this book. And Darius. Just sayin’. If anyone has a question for Darius or Siobhan, ask away! They’ll be dropping in through the day to say hi to everyone who comes by.

For those of you who want more info, you can find Siobhan and her wonderful cast of characters at her WEBSITE, BLOG, FACEBOOK, TWITTER, GOODREADS, and GOOGLE+.

Want to buy the book? It’s available from SMASHWORDS, ALL ROMANCE EBOOKS, and AMAZON.

BLURB
Magic, mayhem, and motherhood… a witch’s work is never done, but Sabrina draws the line at the Fae.

After almost two decades as a practicing witch in Cloudburst, Colorado, Sabrina Foxglove is done with men, magic, and the fertility rituals of High Beltane. She’s dealt with all three before and ended up with a young daughter and no partner. Twice. She’s looking forward to a magic-free May Day, with nothing more exciting than making brownies for a kindergarten class and decorating a May Pole. She definitely doesn’t have time for a handsome, Fae-touched man.

After almost two centuries as the human chamberlain to the Fae’s Summer Court, Darius Winterbourne is a man accustomed to getting his way. So when the Summer Queen tasks him with finding a witch to perform the annual rituals and strengthen the ancient warding magicks, he figures it should be easy. He doesn’t expect Sabrina’s hardheaded refusal, her untrained abilities, or his attraction to her. With less than a week to Beltane, he must gain Sabrina’s trust before he loses his home, his position…and his heart.

Bucket List 31-40

notebook

I hope everyone had a safe and sane 4th of July yesterday! Mmmm, BBQ brisket. And cold beer. Yeah, the 4th is one of the few days in the year where I imbibe in the cold brew. 😉

Today’s list includes some intangibles. But we always need to keep unattainable goals so we have something to work toward, right!?!

31. Write all the books floating around in my head (whether they get published or not). [Yeah…no. Iffy does this whole ROFLHAO thing every time she reads this. 🙄 ]

32. See my  blog (Penumbra) actually RSS’d by someone.

33. Write well enough and often enough that someone would want to RSS . [While *writing well* is subjunctive, I must be doing something right because several people are RSSing!] shifty-eyes-ani2faster

34. Have a fangirl/fanboi for a character or book that I’ve written. Any volunteers? EDIT: As Liza reminded me 😳 and Ev volunteered, I can mark this one off, too! 😀

35. Cover up the nasty green and gold flocked wallpaper in my living room. (We’ve lived here… *counts* …ten years and I swore that was the first thing I was going to do to redecorate. Shush!) I did get the wall mural in the den covered – that room is done now! Next? Probably my bedroom as we need a new roof before the living room can be finished (leaks in the ceiling) [Okay–this is so old I need to change the years to 17. Holy moley! We’ve lived here going on 17 years and I STILL have that frickin’ wallpaper!!!! ARRGGGGGGGGGHHHHH. *breathes* But at least that sound of hammering you hear is the roofer. Yes. It took me that long to save the money for the roof. *sigh*]

36. Learn to paint with water colors.

37. See the Grand Canyon at dawn and at sunset (from two different sides) and take photographs.

38. Visit Stonehenge again.

39. Hike to the top of the “mountain” in Wales that they made the movie “The Man Who Went Up a Hill and Came Down A Mountain” about. With the soundtrack on an iPod/iPhone.

40. I suppose I should get an iPod before I do that… Got one. Lost it. Have an iPhone now that I use for music. 🙂

How can it be Friday again?!? Oh, wait. I set this up…uhm…four weeks ago? On a Friday. *gigglesnort* Hope y’all have some fabulous plans for the weekend!
